2 A Note From Linda Away From Home Welcome to the June 2009 Digital Scrapper Premier! I m writing from the Hilton Hotel in Anaheim, California where I ve come with my husband for our church denomination convention. Have you ever noticed how nicely designed hotel rooms are? Take a look at these rich colors and textures: Terrific Type Type is one of our most used design elements. In this issue we ll give you some great ideas for maximizing type. We re introducing an instructor who is new to Scrapper s Guide, but who is a veteran at teaching -- Kayla Lamoreaux. I know you ll enjoy her fun tutorial on making a type overlay! I actually filmed my tutorial on how to create Painted Letters while on the Paradise cruise ship. Since we were coming to the LA area for a convention anyway, Charlie and I decided to look for a last minute cruise special to Catalina Island out of Long Beach. It was fun, and I got more work done on board than I often do at home. I hope you enjoy this month s goodies and tutorials! I find myself snapping photos as soon as I enter a hotel room. 3 Top Pick - May 2009 Recess by Heather Roselli The number one thing I like about this wonderful page called Memorial Day Weekend 2009, by genesis49, is the excellent photography, including the main photo, which was shot from above. I can just imagine this busy boy at play! The playground elements from Heather Roselli s Recess kit add to the happy-go-lucky feel of this layout. Notice the repetition of circles with the bubbles in the background, the three buttons, and the round focal point image with a red stroke around it. Repetition is a well known design technique, which is effectively used in this layout. The rectangular filmstrip is a pleasing contrast to the circles. Very nice page, genesis49! 5 Meet our June 2009 Premier Designer: Veronica Spriggs Hello! My name is Veronica Spriggs and I m so glad for the chance to share my kit with you as June s Featured Designer. I hope you will enjoy In His World. It s a very versatile kit, just perfect for your masculine-themed layouts. I haven t done a masculine kit in quite some time, so I was very inspired in creating this for you. I had a lot of fun designing it and I hope you ll have hours of fun creating with it. I m a very creative person and always have been. I studied art throughout high school and college, and have always had a job that allowed me some type of creative outlet. Once I discovered graphic design, a whole new world of creativity opened up for me. I taught myself to master (if there is such a thing) Paint Shop Pro and then moved on to Photoshop. I am a true techie and absolutely love all things electronic. So my PC was like an extension of myself. Combined with art, I found a new heaven on earth! Eventually my digital endeavors led to digital scrapbooking and I have been hooked ever since. I enjoy creating rich, and elegant kits with unique and realistic elements. You ll find rich, warm color schemes are the palettes I choose most often, but I do like to switch up from time to time. In my spare time (when there is any), I am quite the amateur photographer. I enjoy trying to capture that perfect photo. So we, my honey and I, like to get away in search of good times, good food and the perfect photo op. I m also a great cook and have the perfect partner to practice my culinary skills on! 10 Meet our new Tutorial Instructor: Kayla Lamoreaux As the mother of five busy children, my philosophy with scrapbooking has always been, Keep it simple. That s ultimately why I embraced going digital. Along with chronicling the everyday and extraordinary events of my immediate family, I also enjoys using photos I ve collected of my extended family dating back to the 1800 s. 13 Extra Tidbits Cool Type Elements by Linda Sattgast Since our focus in Premier this month is on type, I thought I would share a fun and versatile way to use large blocks of type as part of an element. You ll need some type that is fairly dense, like newspaper print. You can create this yourself with the Type tool so there are no copyright issues, or you can find an old book that is out of print, or one that isn t copyrighted, like the King James version of the Bible. In my example, I scanned an old, out-ofprint book of Shakespeare s plays. It had gotten wet and the paper was yellowed with age, but with a few Photoshop tweaks, I separated the type from the background. It s perfect for doing what I show in this tutorial. Add type on top of kit elements. Change the opacity or blend mode to achieve the look you want. Erase over areas that shouldn t have type. Click on the Foreground Color Chip and choose a medium color of gray. Click okay. Get the Elliptical Marquee tool and click and drag a circle while pressing the Shift key to maintain a perfect circle. Click on the Create A New Layer icon. Press Alt Backspace (Mac: Opt Delete) to fill the circle with the Foreground color of gray. Choose Select > Deselect. Reduce the opacity at the top of the Layers palette to approximately 5% Add an inner shadow to better define the edges. Get the Type tool and type some dense type above the circle or click and drag some scanned type that s been selected from the background over your circle. Press Alt (Mac: Opt) and click between the type and circle layer to group them together. Reduce the opacity of the type layer until it is a light gray color. With the Type tool, type a large word or words inside the circle that will be the main focus of your acrylic element. The color and size should make it stand out. You can add dense type to other embelishments, such as swirls and flourishes.
