2 In this tutorial, you will learn about: the Marquee tool the Edit in Quick Mask Mode feature the Spatter filter the Edit in Standard Mode feature making a new layer the Drop Shadow style saving as a.jpg file the Eraser Tool When you finish this tutorial, you image might look like this: Open the image, Tutorial.jpg. 3 Rectangular Marquee tool Click on the Rectangular marquee tool. Draw a border near the edge of your image. Edit in Quick Mask Mode Click on the Edit in Quick Mask Mode button. Your image will have a red border. NSW Department of Education and Training Page 3 of 12

4 Click File and Save. Save this file as : File Name: Tutorial_border Format: Photoshop(*.PSD;*PDD) Spatter Filter Apply a Filter to rough up the edge of the quick mask (red border). To do this, click Filter, Brush Strokes and Spatter. The Spatter Dialogue box will appear. Settings should be:- Spray Radius- 20 Smoothness-5 You can repeat the same settings and add to the effect or play with the settings. Click OK NSW Department of Education and Training Page 4 of 12

5 Your image might look like this: Edit in Standard Mode Click on Edit in Standard Mode. This will give you a selection-i.e. running ants NSW Department of Education and Training Page 5 of 12

6 Click Select and Inverse. Switch white to background colour using the switching arrow or press x on your keyboard. Press Delete on your keyboard. Click Select and Deselect. Your image might look like this: NSW Department of Education and Training Page 6 of 12

7 Make a new layer To enhance this, we can add a Drop Shadow. Click Select and Reselect. Click Select and Inverse. Click Edit and Copy. Click Edit and Paste. You will now have two layers in the Layers Palette. In the Layers Palette, on the background layer, click on the eye icon to make the layer invisible. In your image, the background layer is invisible: Click Layer, New and Layer. NSW Department of Education and Training Page 7 of 12

8 Name the layer White. Click OK. Click Edit and Fill. Click on the black arrow next to Use and select White. Click OK. Your image should now look completely white. Change the layer order in the Layers Palette. To do this, click and hold on Layer 2. Drag it down underneath Layer 1. NSW Department of Education and Training Page 8 of 12

9 Create the Drop Shadow Click back to Layer 1 in the Layers Palette to activate it. Click Layer, Layer Style and Drop Shadow. The Layer Style dialogue box will appear. NSW Department of Education and Training Page 9 of 12

10 Adjust the structure settings: Opacity Angle Distance Spread Size Also the Styles Inner Shadow Outer Glow etc Click OK. With its finished photographic edge, your image might look like this: NSW Department of Education and Training Page 10 of 12

11 The Styles you choose will appear on the Layer in the Layers Palette i.e. Drop shadow, Inner shadow. If you double-click on the Style in the Layers Palette, the dialogue box will reappear for adjustments. Saving It is good practice to save 2 versions - the Photoshop version with layers and a jpeg version without layers. Extension Use Eraser Tool instead of filter on Mask Instead of applying a Filter you can use the Eraser tool. Click Window and Brushes. NSW Department of Education and Training Page 11 of 12

12 Select an interesting brush (i.e. spatter 14 pixels) and erase the red quick mask to create an effect. Your image might look like this: Now, to finish your edge after using the Eraser tool, you can return to here and proceed as before. NSW Department of Education and Training Page 12 of 12
