3 The Challenge: What is the challenge? Creating and programming a sumo-bot to compete against other robots What sort of tasks do you need to address? Building the robot? Programming the robot? Tactics for success? Sensing other robots to attack? (Ultrasonic Sensor) Navigating the arena to avoid running off the mat? (Light/Colour Sensor)

4 Building the Robot: Design Challenge How are you going to design your Robot? What features can you include for a tactical advantage? Do you know of any designs that work?

6 Programming our Robots What tasks do we need to program? Finding other robots and attacking Protecting ourselves from attacks Which task should we prioritise? Attack or Defend? What do you think? Let s refresh the basics with the basics of programming

7 The Square Task 1: Work out how many blocks you will need to move your robot Task 2: Use the Move Steering in the Action Tab to complete the square. Task 3: Can you make a perfect square?

8 Using Loops As some of you probably realised, we can use a loop to complete the square Using the count loop at 4 repeats To make a perfect square 1.1 rotations were used. How many rotations did you use? People at your table? Are they the same? OneNote: What are some reasons for this?

9 The Ultrasonic Sensor The Ultrasonic goes in Port 4 on your Brick Measures distance to an object using sound waves Using a specific frequency the sensor listens for that sound wave to bounce back distance = speed of sound time taken 2 OneNote Extension Task: It is difficult to measure distances between the robot and oddly shaped or round objects. Why does this occur? Research the ultrasonic sensor and find some real life uses.

10 The Wait Block To stop the robot, we use a wait block This means that the program will not continue until the condition has been met We need to use the wait block to: Wait for 5 seconds after the touch sensor has been pressed

11 Programming with the Ultrasonic In this program the robot will not continue until the ultrasonic measures a distance less than 50 We use the Move Tank: On This means that the robot will go forward indefinitely until we tell it to do something. Motors: On Task 1: Recreate the code on the previous slide and see what happens. Do you think a distance of 50cm is very accurate? What number do you think it should be? Ultrasonic Sensor Compare Distance Centimetres Remember your signs: 0 = Equals 1 Does Not Equal 2 > Greater Than 3 Greater Than or Equal to 4 < Smaller Than Distance 5 Smaller Than or Equal to

12 Now you try programming the Ultrasonic: Task 2: Stop before a wall then: 1. Reverse 2. Turn around Task 3: Make the robot chase you around the room! How can you edit the program to continuously chase you?

13 The Switch Block Does this look similar to the Wait Block? Condition = True The Switch Block is found in the Flow Control tab (orange) The block works as a IF Statement Firstly, a condition is set in this case distance is less than 50 Now this condition can be either True or False this is called Binary logic. The benefit of a switch block is that we can program something to happen if either the condition is true or false. Condition = False

14 Chase me round the room Version II Before we used the Ultrasonic to chase us around the room. How can we improve the program using the Switch Block?

15 Now, how can we use the Ultrasonic to find and attack other robots?

16 Defence against attacks How can we defend ourselves from attacks? Mechanical defences? Programming defences? Let s start with programming defences How do we know if we are about to go outside the arena? If we use the colour/light sensor, what s going to be the condition? If we see then If not then

17 Light/Colour Sensor Using Colour The colour sensor detects certain colours: Today we only need to detect Black or White We will be using the colour sensor today the Reflected light intensity works well too if you would like to investigate it instead Using Reflected Light Intensity The sensor takes a reading of how much light is reflected from a surface Darker surfaces absorb more light and therefore a smaller number is recorded Lighter surfaces reflect more light and therefore a larger number is recorded. Therefore black < 50, white > 50

18 Using a Switch, how to program the Colour Sensor If we see white, we focus on attacking therefore we leave the true condition as blank If we don t see white, we must be near the edge and therefore full power defend at all costs!

19 Now let s put the program together! We can use two start buttons so that we have one program attacking and another program to defend Once you have your final program, test it out on the mats When everyone is done, we will have a final competition!!
