1 Visit our Web Page at The ROTARY CLUB of LIVERMORE Feb 14, 2018 Valentine Program Meeting Photos by Beth Wilson From an overcast but clearing sky Rotarians entered the festively decorated meeting room to be inspired by the red decorations and much red in the costumes of many other Rotarians who filled all the tables to contemplate the romantic associations of the calendar-marked Valentines Day. Kathy Streeter had organized a theme party for our meeting, and many Rotarians were soon in a festive spirit. Shiela Fagliano, costumed in a red dress as a cigarette girl, joined red-vested me as greeters Bruce Shore Your Spur Reporter Sheila Fagliano Thought for the Day TUESDAY 11:55 AM-12:30 Interact Livermore High Room 412 New Day! 2 and Don Seibel took photos of couples in front of a suitable red drape. Genial President Sam brought the meeting to order with an update on the recuperation of Paul Brown, who is now at Creekside in Pleasanton, where he will welcome visitors. Peter Poulsen then let the traditional Pledge of Allegiance (for which all caps were taken off briefly). Not surprisingly, our unison song today was Let me call you sweetheart led by Jon Hart, with guitar by Michael Ferrucci and a chorus of Kathy Streeter, Cathy Coyle, Mike Riehl, Beth Wilson and Linda Tinney. Cigarette-girl Shiela gave us a Valentine Wish, along with a list of desirable alternatives, notably beautiful thoughts for loved ones. President Sam thanked many of the day s helpers: Spur Reporter Bruce Shore, photographer Don Seibel, Room setup Phil Dean, Videographer Nile Runge, Visuals Al Frank, Front desk John Sarboraria, Irv Stowers, and others that I have missed. Visiting Rotarians: Julie Deck and Vera Martinez from Brentwood (Vera here as a Bluebadge requirement), Bonnie Schmidt, Tri-Valley Rotary. Guests (other than spouses): Dick Warga and Jacob Ried, soon to become members; Phil Pierpont with Beth Wilson, retailing sports footwear amongst other things; Jean Otto with John Shirley; Denise Leddon with Linda Tinney. There were no Red Badgers today for the customary introduction. JACK O. MILLS, D.D.S., Inc. ORAL AND MAXILLO-FACIAL SURGERY 2 60 FENTON ST., SUITE 7 LIVERMORE, CA
3 Michael Ferrucci reminded us of the March 10 concert of the Nell and Jim Band, to benefit our music scholarship fund. This is a great group of musicians, and Michael welcomes help in publicizing the event. Our annual I-House weekend, when we host students from the International House at UC Berkeley, will take place March 3-4. Hosts are needed, and drivers. Contact Evonne Hopkins. Home repairs weekend will be March 3 at 9am. We will be making repairs of the home of an elderly resident. If you missed it... If you missed the Rotary program, or a new member talk, or if you want to see it again, just go to the Rotary website, click on Club Publications, click on videos, and they are all there. Just click on your choice and it will play. Also, friends can see the videos just by going to our website and clicking. 4 Carol Howell reported that dictionaries have already been delivered to the Leo Croce school. Calendars of the next distributions were on all the tables. Spouse introductions: In keeping with the Valentine Day theme, many Rotarians had brought spouses. My notes record the following couples, many of whom were celebrating exactly 35 years of marriage, and all of whom offered praise and compliments for their companion. Dale and Kari Miller (55), John and Carolyn Lynn (35), Mike and Nancy Morgan (35), Joel and Mary Martha Swanson (35), Mike and Anita Thompson (35), Irv and Patty Stowers (45), Mark and Patty Stoker (>40), Bill and Jane Nebo (14), Paul and Pauline Thompson (37), Millie and Don Seibel (40), Alan and Mary Burnam (47), Brian and Susan Mayall (63), Wendy Ellison and Carl Rosenkilde (26), Mike and Carol Riehl (55), Steve and Ludy Neef, Jay and Mary Davis (55), Kathy and Clark Streeter (56), Jen and Don Thaete (26), Ted and Courtney Michels. Kathy Streeter then took charge of our meeting, setting the festive tone by offering suggestions of what NOT to say to a spouse today. The one I remember was You have just the right amount of grumpy. Linda Tinney and Jon Hart (with guitar) next serenaded us with a fitting choice for the occasion, what I think was titled Let it be me. Next Kathy oversaw a contest in which each table would be called upon (in an order determined by a hat-drawn number) to answer a true or false question that had some connection with romances. If the table answered correctly (as did mine) Cigarette-girl Shiela would reward them with a boxlet of candy hearts; a wrong answer brought a pack of candy cigarettes. 4
5 Here is what my notes show regarding the statements that were to be judged true or false. Table 2. Juliet of Shakespeare fame gets 100 love letters every Valentines day. (False. She gets a thousand) Table 11 A story than Don Seibel sent Millie a dozen yellow roses on their first meeting (False. Yellow roses mean friendship. He sent red ones, meaning romance) Table 9 Pets are the fifth most popular recipients of Valentines (True. They rank just after teachers, mothers, wives and something else) Table 10 Valentine s day is attributed to Shakespeare (False, Henry VIII was credited by Kathy. But there came from our table a Googled correction tracing it much further back.) Table 8 JR Romero, on his first date with his wife, was snubbed having to do with a dispute over relative height (False. The dispute ended amicably with a measurement) Table 13 When lovers stare into each others eyes their heartbeats with synchronize. (True according to Kathy. Takes 3 minutes) Table 3 Don Wentz at some party fell or was tossed from a fourth floor balcony (False. It was first floor. This table, mine, guessed correctly) Table 6 A statement about how many candy hearts are produced every year (True, some 8 billion) Table 4 A man, on average will spend one year of his life staring at women. (Kathy s source says true. But surely during the first few years of life this limit has already been exceeded. ) Table 5 Sam Steele asked the father of his wife-to-be for his approval while on a Dodge Ridge ski lift (False. It was the Lucky Market parking lot) Table 1 Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor a ring costing 4 times what the donald paid for one (True. The ring for Liz cost $8.8 million) Kathy followed this highly amusing and very lively activity with a few more amusing Factoids. President Sam then called those half dozen or so Rotarians to stand and be shamed and fined $5, because they had ignored or forgotten the admonition to wear something red. Amongst the standees were at least two past presidents and a present board member. Next we honored two couples who celebrated their anniversary exactly today: Bill and Jane Nebo, and Stu and Cindy Gary (he had departed). Two other couples were recognized for having exceed 60 years of marriage 5
6 together: Susan and Brian Mayall was one, and the second was barbara & Bob Hickman. Once again the Tinney-Hart duo brought us another appropriate vocal, this one seemingly titled "Wherever you may go Let me be there. In concluding, President Sam gave special credit to several Rotarians that had made this delightful program successful: Organizer and mistress of ceremonies Kathy Streeter, Cigarette-girl Shiela Fagliano, Kathy Coyle, Millie Seibel, Jon Hart and Linda Tinney. Next week we will hear past district governor Brad Howard, not at our usual Doubletree but at the nearby Elks Club. Jacquie Williams-Courtright won the raffle. 6
