7 Marc Roberts Looks like he;s waiting for a Pie in the Face The Program: Marc Roberts*, the Livermore City Manager and our own resident hilarian, described the now completed Business Park development at the intersection of Jack London Blvd and Isabel, and then gave a quick City Update. Livermore has three governments: the City (Marc, Manager); the LARPD: Livermore Area parks and Recreation District (Tim Barry, Director); and LVJUSD: Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District (Kelly Bowers, Superintendent); these leaders are all members of this Club. Oaks Business Park is under the City s jurisdiction and includes Gillig (bus manufacturer), Tesla (The Tesla), Cable Wholesale, Draxlmaier (injection molding, some for Tesla) and Toyota Materials Transport (forklifts, 20% of the forklifts sold in the USA). Gillig is the largest producer of public transportation buses in the USA. 1% of their sales come to Livermore as sales tax. Tesla does R&D and assembles their dashboards at this 1 million square foot facility for final assembly into sleek cars in Freemont; our part of the action is the largest commercial project in Eastbay history. Draxlmaier is having a job fare today for its injection molding production facility. Other projects throughout the City include: New City Council Chambers, also serving as the command center for our emergency preparedness, will be sited on the vacant library site, the library to be demolished early next year. The actual city council meeting room has been named the John Shirley Chamber. The Center for Innovation and Economic Development will move into the old Penny s location on 2nd St. 6
8 Planning for the Downtown Center will conduct 7 workshops during September and October, starting September 13 at the Shriner s Center, to consider 4 proposed alternatives and generate green field options. Consult www. YourLivermore.org in order to participate. Train Depot is moved. Its custom foundation is being built, to be joined with reconditioned parking, all by early next summer. Aviation Bar and Restaurant just opened (we ate there tonight outside above the city; good food; enjoyable experience) on the roof above Patxi s, joins five other new restaurants, pubs, Indian food eateries and groceries, and tea cafes in our fair town. Not sure what will happen to Kim s Mountain Sport building, but it is rumored to become another craft brews establishment Home2 Residence Hotel is replacing the old Residence Inn near Costco with a new 100 plus unit facility. Lam Research, at 1 Portola Ave across the freeway, now employs more than 700 people in the manufacture of machines for chip wafer manufacturing. Topcon, who is our Club s corporate sponsor, now employs 360 in the manufacture of precision guidance equipment for grading and farm machinery; the company recently won the Game Changers Innovation Award. *Marc Roberts is the most informative and entertaining speaker that has ever appeared before us. He should provide at least three programs per year, with random topics, as he baffles his hecklers no matter the brilliance of their questions, and entertains and enlightens the rest of us in the boot. Gerrardo Contreras won the raffle. President Sam proudly displays one of his new Gavels. 7
