1 V July/August/September Traffic Adaptive Installation Preparation, July-September 2017 The Traffic Operations group intends to kick-off their traffic adaptive trial installation in October The project area encompasses 28 intersections in the Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach Boulevard, London Bridge Road and Lynnhaven Parkway corridors. All the servers, mid-block detection, intersection video detection, and high resolution data traffic controllers have been installed. Staff also installed bluetooth detection on high volume corridors. These devices track MAC addresses from cell phones/bluetooth devices and provide travel times for vehicles proceeding through a corridor. This will help determine the efficiency of the travel adaptive installation. Staff training on the new system will begin in October. Metrics to measure the performance of the new system will begin immediately. Months of before data has already been collected. 3 The in-ground vehicle detectors collect traffic count information and calculate vehicle occupancy; information needed by the traffic control software to perform real-time adjustments to the traffic signal timings. An added benefit is road surface temperature detection. Road surface temperatures are especially important during snow/ice season; enabling the TMC to provide information to the snow/ice removal teams on which roads need anti-icing treatment. 4 Mid block and stop bar traffic detection are vital components in the traffic adaptive set-up. We have installed over 196 mid block detection devices into the pavement sub layer at the project intersections. We have also modified our video detection camera hardware to enable vehicle detection at the stop bar. Mid-block detection at the Virginia Beach Boulevard/Great Neck Road/London Bridge Road intersection. Staff also installed 20 access points along the project corridors. These access points allow two-way communications between roadside traffic controllers, our dedicated server, and the traffic management system. This real-time exchange of vehicle detection information is key to providing real-time traffic signal retiming calculations and forwarding this information into the signal controllers in the field. We will be working with the traffic adaptive set-up installation through the November/December timeframe. The mix of school traffic, holiday traffic at Lynnhaven Mall, and variable traffic flows from I-264 should provide a great opportunity to test the flexibility and effectiveness of the traffic adaptive technology. 4
