1 SUMMER ART 2017 Ages 3 Adult CLASSES ENROLLMENT MUSEUM MEMBERS Family Level and above may participate in early enrollment for summer classes March Public enrollment begins March 20. Enroll online (nelson-atkins.org/summer-classes), or by phone ( ART). Enrollment is on a first-call, first-served basis. Phone enrollment is taken 9 a.m. 5 p.m. Monday Saturday. Credit/debit card payment required. Class fee includes all materials. Please be prepared to provide the following information when you enroll: student s name, address, date of birth, home phone, emergency phone and the parent/guardian name. We accept individual enrollments only; one person may not enroll students from multiple families. ENROLL EARLY Class size is limited. Enrollment deadline is three days prior to a class or workshop. Classes that do not reach a minimum enrollment will be cancelled and fees refunded. PARKING for museum members is free; nonmembers parking for more than 30 minutes either to attend class or wait while their student is in class will pay $10 per vehicle. SCHOLARSHIPS The scholarship program provides students with the opportunity to participate in museum art classes, regardless of financial circumstances. Scholarships are awarded based upon financial need and a desire to participate. Look for next to eligible classes. Opportunities are also available for other art classes and can be requested on the application form. Visit nelson-atkins. org/scholarships for more information or to apply. Deadline to receive applications is June 1, MEMBERSHIP DISCOUNTS Friend of Art members receive a 20% discount and Society of Fellows a 30% discount off the listed enrollment fee. 1

See page 1 for details. nelson-atkins.org/summer-classes CANCELLATION, REFUND AND TRANSFER POLICIES CANCELLATIONS Students can cancel an enrollment five business days prior to a class or one-time workshop to receive a refund less a $15 cancellation fee per enrollment. No refunds will be issued for cancellations made less than five business days prior or due to missing a class. TRANSFERS An enrollment may be switched from one class/ workshop to another up until five business days prior to a class / workshop with a $10 transfer fee on a per student/per class basis. Please feel certain of your schedule and class selection before enrolling to avoid incurring this charge. No transfers will be made less than five business days prior to the start of a class, after a class begins, or due to missing a class. CLASS CREDITS We do not issue credits toward future classes or workshops if you cancel an enrollment or miss a class. The Ford Learning Center has been made possible by Ford Motor Company Fund. 2 CAMP ART IN ACTION AGES 6 13 Students must be entering 1st grade in the fall to enroll. Monday through Friday 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Extended day is offered from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cost for the week is $75.00 Scholarships available for all Full-Day Camps (extended care included) CAMP OUT THIS SUMMER AT THE NELSON-ATKINS! Participate in art classes, taught by Ford Learning Center instructors, make new friends and have additional fun-filled learning activities, led by camp counselors, to round out the day. Visits from mystery guests (museum staff members who work with art every day) will occur throughout the week to allow students inside access to the Museum world. LUNCH Monday, the first day of camp, will be pizza day with pizza ordered from a local restaurant., bring a non-perishable, sack lunch including drink or purchase box lunches from the museum restaurant. Cost for box lunches (four days) is $35. Parent/Guardians will need to complete the appropriate forms for students to participate in full-day camps. Forms will be mailed with enrollment confirmation and a return envelope provided. YOUTH FULL-DAY CAMPS KNIGHTS, DRAGONS AND CASTLES Monday, July 17 Friday, July 21 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Ages 6 9 $300 Take a step back in time to explore art and architecture of the Medieval and Renaissance periods. Castle building, heraldry, royal portraits, symbols of power and medieval legends such as St. George and the Dragon will be investigated and provide the inspiration for making art. CASTLE ADVENTURE: THE ART & STAGECRAFT OF HAMLET Monday, July 17 Friday, July 21 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Ages 9 13 $300 Instructors: Barry Teghtmeyer and Matt Rapport, Director of Education, Heart of America Shakespeare Festival Act 1, Scene 1. Elsinore. A platform before the castle. Such begins the play Hamlet. In partnership with the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival, this camp explores the art and architecture of the middle ages, as well as the stage craft of this summer s production of Hamlet. Learn about medieval castles, create a coat of arms, explore costuming and finish the week with a short performance. PENCILS TO PAINTBRUSHES Monday, July 24 Friday, July 28 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Ages 6 13 $300 Do you like to draw and paint? Spend the week doing both and working with a wide variety of materials. We ll also mix it up a bit with some unusual and non-traditional approaches! Learn about the components of line, color, shape, expression and composition as you capture both what you see and what is in your imagination on paper. We will explore the new Bloch Galleries of European Art and also make an offsite trip to the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, located one block west of the Nelson-Atkins.

3 45th & Oak, Kansas City, Missouri ART AGES 6 13, CONTINUED MAKER STUDIO: TIMELESS TECHNIQUES Monday, July 31 Friday, August 4 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Ages 6 13 $300 Explore art making techniques from the past to the future! Egg tempera paint was cutting edge technology in 1400 and the introduction of oil paints in tubes resulted in the Impressionist painters ability to work outdoors in the landscape. What are artists doing with current technology? Let s find connections to the past as we explore the art of the future including painted circuits, movie making on ipads and 3-D printing. CAMP ART IN ACTION CARTOON & ANIMATION: CREATING FUNNY IMPRESSIONS! Monday, July 24 Friday, July 28 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Ages 9 13 $300 Instructors: Bill Brewer and Brent Bellew Learn cartooning is all about seeing and imagining and drawing your funny impressions of it! Learn to create cartoon characters from basic shapes, including their emotional expressions and body language, and involve them in funny storytelling situations and storyboards. Create animated shorts with your characters by utilizing a combination of traditional hand drawn methods and computer animation software (istopmotion). Record voice-over narration, plus add sound effects and music to your animated short. Learn basic video editing techniques using imovie to combine your assorted parts and create a finished product. CARTOON & ANIMATION WITH WALT DISNEY Monday, July 31 Friday, August 4 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Ages 9 13 $300 Instructors: Bill Brewer and Brent Bellew Kansas City s own Walt Disney is a great cartoon animator and teacher of artists and cartoonists. We ll learn from him about the creation of humorous characters and stories, from Mickey Mouse to The Lion King, and create ones ourselves in cartoon situations, storyboards and animations! Create animated shorts with your characters by utilizing a combination of traditional hand drawn methods and computer animation software (istopmotion). Monday, July 17 Friday, July 21 9 a.m. 4 p.m. Ages $300 Instructor: Michelle Dreher Test the boundaries between accidental and intentional art through various printmaking processes. Find colors in the galleries and experiment with mixing and combining colors in your own artwork. MY MUSEUM BOOK Tuesday, June 27 Friday, June 30 or 1:30 3:30 p.m. Tour the galleries to see amazing works of art and practice drawing, painting and collage to create a special book all about your art. BACK TO NATURE Discover the shapes, colors, textures, patterns and forms found in nature and see how they apply to art. Work with these fundamentals to paint, collage and create sculpture. INTO THE MIX Tuesday, August 1 Friday, August 4 Paint, paper, fabric, clay even odds and ends from the recycle bin! Experiment with combining materials to see what new and unusual art you can create. WEEKDAY CLASSES AGES 5 6 PORTABLE MUSEUM Tuesday, June 20 Friday, June 23 or 1:30 3:30 p.m. Assemble your own miniature museum by creating small drawings, paintings and sculptures. Housed in a handmade container, your museum will be ready to travel! We will visit the new Bloch Galleries of European Art and draw our inspiration from artist Marcel Duchamp s sculpture Box in a Valise. 4 COLOR GARDEN Tuesday, June 27 Friday, June 30 or 1:30 3:30 p.m. Experiment with mixing your own colors and combining them in different ways as you investigate color in both nature and art. Create a three-dimensional garden of color, adding to it each day. ARTFUL ANIMALS or 1:30 3:30 p.m. Discover galloping horses, dancing elephants and playful monkeys as you visit the galleries and use a variety of media to create art about animals. MERMAIDS AND MORE Tuesday, August 1 Friday, August 4 or 1:30 3:30 p.m. Use your imagination to draw, paint and sculpt make-believe creatures after finding dragons, mermaids, a threeheaded serpent, and more in the museum galleries.

Work with a variety of materials to create drawings, prints and sculptures of our favorite furry friends. POP UP: SCULPTURAL BOOKS Tuesday, August 1 Friday, August 4 Create your own original book that features pop-up three dimensional elements. Sculpture in the galleries will provide the inspiration, but you create the story and design the book! DRAWING BECOMES... or 1:30 3:30 p.m. Start with drawing and see what it can become transform sketches into paintings, mixed media compositions and even sculpture. WEEKDAY CLASSES AGES 8 12 ART NATURALLY Tuesday, August 1 Friday, August 4 1:30 3:30 p.m. Investigate the world of nature and how nature can inspire artists such as Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Paul Cezanne, with visits to the Bloch Galleries of European Art. Create prints, paintings and drawings that have a connection to all that grows. WEEKDAY CLASSES AGES 7 10 NATURE SKETCHBOOK Develop your drawing skills as you learn about line, shape, gesture, value, form and showing spatial distance. The natural world will be the focus and students will draw from art in the galleries and outside (weather permitting). WEEKDAY CLASSES AGES 9 13 CARTOONING: COMICAL CATS AND CANINES! Instructor: Bill Brewer Cats and dogs are the most favorite cartoon animals in the world! Why? Because a dog will talk with you and a cat will boss you. And we love it! We will learn to draw cats and dogs from basic shapes like circles and squares, and give them funny facial expressions and body language! Next, we ll learn to draw them in funny storytelling illustrations, gag cartoons, comic strips and storyboards. We ll make it reign cats and dogs! And laugh a lot! MAKER STUDIO: IT S ELECTRIC! 1:30 3:30 p.m. Instructor: Amy Berridge Many artists are integrating cutting edge technology into their artwork. Clay processes will be inspired by nature and landscape and students will visit the new Bloch Galleries of European Art to see how nature inspired the Impressionist painters. Please note: to allow for drying and firing of ceramic pieces, some student work will need to be picked-up after the class is over. Remaining ceramic pieces will be available for pick-up beginning July 29. DRAWING FROM NATURE 1:30 3:30 p.m. $180 Work with graphite, watercolor, tempera paint and more to explore the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Lessons will focus on learning about line, color, space and composition with the subject matter being the natural world and an introduction to the art of the French Impressionist painters, located in the new Bloch Galleries of European Art. This class provides much needed studio work time. The first week will concentrate on the skills of observational drawing, focusing on the unique subject matter found in the galleries. The second week, students will explore one subject in depth, utilizing various medias and approaches to composition. 6

SHAPE SEARCH July 22 $25 Hunt for interesting shapes in painting and sculpture in the galleries and then make your own wire sculpture featuring shapes from your imagination. AGES 6 8 IN THE LILY POND June 24 $25 Visit the Bloch Galleries of European Art to view the magnificent Water Lilies painting by Claude Monet and paint your own imaginary pond environment containing plants and aquatic life. IT S JUST A DREAM July 22 $25 Learn about surrealism or art inspired by dreams and the subconscious mind. See Surrealist art in the Bloch Galleries of European Art and then create your own dream-like environment working with mixed-media. The more mysterious, the better! AGES 9 13 NATURE IN WATERCOLOR June 24 $25 Go outside into the Kansas City Sculpture Park to draw from nature and then use your sketches to create a mixed-media watercolor painting. PRINTS: GO ORGANIC! July 22 $25 Let items from nature become your creative tools. Use organic materials to create amazing mono or single prints working with a gelatin plate. TEEN WEEKDAY CLASSES AGES THE SURREAL SELF 1:30 4 p.m. $130 Real or surreal? Explore the art of Surrealism art inspired by dreams and the subconscious and create a series of self-portraits made up of unusual elements and unexpected juxtapositions. Visit the new Bloch Galleries of European Art to see examples of Surrealist painting and sculpture by Max Ernst, Yves Tanguy, Joan Miró and Joseph Cornell. DRAWING: REAL TO ABSTRACT Tuesday, July 25 Friday, July 28 1:30 4 p.m. $130 Sketch from art in the galleries as you develop your observational drawing skills and strengthen your ability to capture what you see on paper. Then experiment with introducing abstraction techniques into the drawing process.
