1 Week 1: June 5 th -9 th Color (Sue) An exploration in color! Students will investigate color through the lens of an artist in order to develop new ways of approaching artwork with color and the colorful world that surround us all. The class will begin working in black and white and students will progressively employ more color until at the end of the week, students will have a portfolio filled with works of colorful art. Movement (Joseph) How does an artist represent movement in a 2D artwork, how can sculptures move through space, and how can an artwork move you emotionally? Line (Ben) Students will learn, explore and employ various uses of line using painting, charcoal and ink drawings, and sculptures. Space (Lino) We will discover space; the perspective and proportions of objects, lines and shapes. Projects will include Op Art, play with size and scale, and learn about and create projects utilizing negative and positive space. Rhythm (Lino) Learn how to create rhythm and movement in an artwork. They will get the chance to try classic techniques like handmade paper making, as well as new and experimental approaches that we learn about through looking at the work of current important artists. What materials have historically been used to create housing, why does architecture look so unique here in the Sonoran Desert? Art & Gardens in the Desert (Christy) Discover ways to grow foods in the Sonoran Desert and learn ways artists draw inspiration from cultivated plants. Printmaking, illustrating, and photographic processes capture the beauty of native foods. People of the Southwest (Chloe) Learn about people of the Southwest, traveling through the human history beginning with the Clovis culture up into modern times. How were these historical people represented through portraiture and how do artists document people living today? Nocturnal Desert Dwellers (Willa) Learn about desert creatures that spend their waking hours in the dark of night. What makes these desert dwellers unique and how can artists draw inspiration from these animals? Geography of the Southwest (Willa) We ll explore what makes our natural and geographical environment unique to the Southwest for our inspiration for sculptures, paintings, clay and other art forms. Birdwatching in the Desert (Chloe) Discover our flying friends here in the desert through birdwatching around the Museum, looking through various artist s visual representations of birds and creating your own. Animals of the Southwest (Christy) Discover the desert creatures of the Southwest. Where to they live, what do they eat, how do they camouflage themselves to blend in with their natural surroundings, and how have these desert dwellers adapted to survive in the desert?
