1 SUMMER ART CAMP 2014 General Information The Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers is proud to host its 12th annual Summer Art Camp! We welcome artists between the ages of seven and 14 of all ability levels to interact and study from some of New Jersey s best teaching artists. The faculty of Summer Art Camp is headed by Wes Sherman, a 12-year veteran at the Zimmerli Art Museum. Mr. Sherman has an MFA from Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University and is a successful, independent artist. Classes are posted at A majority of the classes accept from 12 to 15 students; upon reaching full enrollment, a class is marked Closed. A separate registration form should be included for each family member enrolling. All Day Session (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Members: $335 (This price reflects $15 extra per week for lunchtime supervision. 5 Program Descriptions ANIMALS IN ART: Animals, Animals and more Animals! Learn how to draw and sculpt various animals from realistic to abstract. Students explore the wonderful world of animals by learning about them, referencing them in the Zimmerli s galleries, and creating them. ARCHITECTURE OF THE IMAGINATION: Class participants design and plan their very own structures by learning about plans, cross-sections, and elevation drawings. Throughout the class, students learn about contemporary architects, including Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, while exploring the art of perspective. BOUND FOR ART: MAKE YOUR OWN ARTISTS BOOKS: Artists books are all the rage in contemporary galleries. Learn how to create your own artistic handmade books. Students make at least three different types of exciting and colorful books out of surprising materials. These books can be brought home and used as a sketch book, diary, or maybe even a scrapbook. CARTOONING: Professional comic book artist Doug Baron instructs students in the creation of well-known cartoon characters, including Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo, and Sponge Bob, which students reference themselves. Step by step demonstrations and individualized attention help students learn how to master the techniques of drawing hands, feet, facial expressions, and much more. Students are encouraged to use their new skills to invent their own unique characters. CHINESE CRAFTS: EXPLORE THE WORLD OF INSECTS: Come explore the world of insects through another culture! Students learn the skills of Paper Folding (zhézhǐ) and Chinese knots to make their own insects while referencing children s illustrations from the Zimmerli s collection. This class is supported by the Confucius Institute of Rutgers University (CIRU). COMIC BOOK CREATIONS: By popular demand, Doug Baron returns to the Zimmerli this summer to lead students in the creation and writing of comic book stories. Doug shares examples of his comic book, Sugar Ray Finhead, and discusses storytelling techniques such as camera angles, lighting, inking, and word balloons. Students observe the development of animation by referencing popular television cartoons dating back to the beginning of this medium. Each student is encouraged to create his or her own characters and begin a narrative art project. DIFFERENT STROKES: AN INTRODUCTION TO PAINTING: In this class, students learn how to make a painting from start to finish, as well as work in different genres and styles. Students also view works in the Zimmerli s galleries to study the techniques of master artists. DINOSAUR DELIGHTS!: Who said dinosaurs are extinct? Dinosaur enthusiasts are invited back for another summer of dinosaur fun, making these prehistoric creatures come back to life in art! Students learn how to draw, sculpt, and paint a variety of dinosaurs with the help of a professional art teacher. EGYPTIAN ART: Students become immersed in a week-long exploration of Egyptian art and culture. Drawing hieroglyphics, designing a scarab necklace, and creating art around the mummies and pyramids are just some of the adventures that students encounter in this class. EN PLEIN AIR: THE ARTIST IN NATURE: En Plein Air is the act of painting outdoors. Aided by the introduction of paint in tubes in the 1870s, Impressionist artists such as Claude Monet began to produce their works in the landscape rather than in the studio. Like the Impressionists, students use the beauty of nature and sunlight as their inspiration. Weather permitting, students sketch landscapes outdoors and explore various artistic media.

6 INTRODUCTION TO ART TECHNIQUES: This course is perfect for the beginning artist to learn the basics of all the major art mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and watercolor. A theme of art in nature is consistent throughout the demonstrations and projects. JAPANESE ANIMÉ: This class enables students to learn the cartooning style of Japanese Animé, or Manga. Explore Dragon Ball Z, Gundan Wing, and Sailor Moon. Students learn to draw Ninjas, giant robots, Pokémon, princesses, and Yu-Gi-Oh characters. LANDSCAPE PAINTING: This class explores the basic premise of American landscape painting from the Hudson River Valley School. Students learn a brief history of landscape painting and specific techniques, as well as how to create interesting compositions from observation and materials. Weather permitting, students paint outside. LESSONS IN THE GALLERY: PORTRAITS: In this class, students explore the possibilities of portraiture with a variety of dry mediums,and an emphasis on self-portraits and artistic technique. The structure of the class incorporates the vast collection of portraits at the Zimmerli including those located in our special exhibition Striking Resemblance: The Changing Art of Portraiture in order to understand the evolution that has occurred within portraiture throughout history. MEDIEVAL ART TO THE RENAISSANCE: This class asks students to study and practice various drawing techniques from Medieval Art and the Art of the Renaissance to encourage individual development. Students experiment using dry materials with contour drawing, tone, value, and perspective drawing from Illuminated letters to a modern take on the Mona Lisa - studying the mystery behind the smile and pose! MIX IT UP: The term "mixed media" refers to art work made with more than one material. The common use of mixed media was a significant trend in 20th-century art. Often called assemblage art, mixed media includes collage, altered objects, and the combining of different mediums. In this class, students create a painting with newspapers, magazines, and Paris Craft appendages. PAINTING WITH THE MASTERS: Students learn the principles of drawing and painting while studying such famous artists as Monet, Van Gogh, Picasso, and many more. They discuss how artists use style, color, and light, then apply it to their own work. Students use a variety of mediums such as charcoal, pastel, acrylic, and watercolor, while painting from a variety of stilllifes and photographs, or en plein air (weather permitting). PAPER ENGINEERING: Students in this class create cards and models that have moving parts. Paper creations may pop out, turn, move up and down or from side to side. Scoring, cutting, decorating, folding, and gluing are used to compose amazing paper constructions. PUPPET POWER: Students explore the amazing world of puppets, as they work throughout the week to design, sew, and decorate modified sock puppets under the direction of a master puppeteer. The end product is a durable keepsake that can be used in puppet shows for years to come. Students also learn how to manipulate puppets to lip synch with their favorite songs. SHADOW AND LINE: THE SECRETS OF DRAWING: This class provides an introduction to the techniques of drawing with exercises in the museum galleries. Each class is geared toward the appropriate age group. THE ART OF FASHION DESIGN: Art and fashion have always had a close relationship: from artists interested in capturing their ideal color and form on canvas to models strutting designers artwork down a runway. Students learn how to design for fashion while focusing on drawing and art principles such as color theory, line, texture, pattern, and theme. Each student produces his or her own portfolio to showcase unique designs.
