Theme: Hands Program: We will have a live model. Elsie Hall will be featuring one of her hats. So sharpen your pencils and let s kick off the year. I hope everyone had a great holiday, made some wonderful art, and is ready to get back at it. We have two major events coming up in August, and we re gonna need to hit the ground running. August 1-3, Paul Jackson will be here to conduct his Watercolor Workshop. We need at least 14 participants and a few have already expressed interest. August 22-Sept 16 will be our All Member Show. We ll need dedicated individuals to help put these events together, so please be thinking about where you would like to serve. See you soon! Debbye H. 2 Page 2 Workshop News There will be several 1-day workshops coming up this spring, which will be self taught using DVDs or video tapes belonging to Guild members. Several members have filled out the form in a previous notice and returned a list of their interests to me. When meetings begin, we will offer information about these workshops, dates/times, and subjects. Among those to be offered are: ink over watercolor, colored pencil/graphite drawing, and perspective made simple. Some members have requested one on life/portrait drawing. Watch the newsletter for further information. Please see Page 5 for information and a registration form for the upcoming Paul Jackson workshop to be held in August Member News We d like to welcome our newest member, Tricia Henderson from Elizabethtown. Tricia works in acrylic and mixed media on canvas. Tricia states, although art has been a constant presence in my life, I ve finally found the time to focus my energy on it. I have taken a college course here and there in drawing/painting, but my degree is in Physicians Assistant studies. Tricia is a stay-athome mom with three young boys. Rose Cooper and Joyce Lupresto represented CKAG February 27 and judged the Woman's Club Art Contest for 9-12th grade students. All 1st place winners go on to State. December Meeting On December 14 several CKAG members met at Our Place in Elizabethtown for our holiday meal. A delicious variety of side dishes, salads, and desserts accompanied the entrée, prepared by Joyce Lupresto. No meeting was conducted nor minutes taken as those attending simply enjoyed each other s company, the food, Christmas music, and artsy conversation. Marilyn Matthews

In 1994 she retired from a job at Fort Knox and moved to Indiana, joining many art organizations, and then moved to Brown County. Her art was on display in the town and at a gallery in her home. While there, she had a farm and horses, which became the subjects of many of her paintings. Some of her art is still on display in Indiana galleries. In 2013, she returned to Elizabethtown after her husband died. She built a studio on the back of her home with good lighting to paint. Her cats keep her company as she paints. Whatever cat she has at the time often finds itself a subject of her paintings. Originally from Meade County, O Rear belongs to the Central Kentucky Art Guild and recently was chosen as Artist of the Year. She will have a show at Elizabethtown Community & Technical College when she can find an open date at the gallery. Locally she s had art on display in banks, but wishes there was a gallery in Hardin County for artists to display their work. When she paints, she works off a photo or from memory. When the weather is nice, she enjoys painting outdoors. She takes lots of classes and studies art history, she said, but it takes going out and experiencing to find a personal style. She s currently working on a commissioned painting of a wild turkey. It has an acrylic base, but she thinks she will finish it in oil. Once she gets started on a painting, she likes to stick with it until it s finished. O Rear paints in an impressionistic style, she said, often using oil, acrylic or watercolors. Much of her works are landscapes or paintings of animals. What would we do without our animals? she said. She s traveled throughout the country and to Europe, paint brushes and canvas in tow. She often travels with other painters and when they see something they want to paint, they stop and take the extra time. Walking through her home, she shared stories about her paintings on display. A room in the basement houses many of her paintings not on display in her home or in galleries. Every artist who has painted as long as I have has a room like this, she said. It was difficult to give up her gallery in Indiana, she said, but life changes overnight and you have to make the best of it. A painting that hangs in her bedroom is a watercolor that was featured in several shows and was chosen to be featured in Artist magazine. It was inspired by a trip to Arizona. Her favorite painting is one she no longer owns. It was of one of her horses and O Rear said she put an outlandish price on it when she put it on display, thinking no one would buy it. A horse lover bought it shortly after it was on display. Her original paintings typically range from $450-$3,000, but the average is around $700, she said. O Rear doesn t know an exact number, but thinks she has painted hundreds of pieces over the years. For information or to purchase her work, go to

5 P age 5 Get to Know Me Judie Wilson I really have no formal background in art. Since I married, I have lived in 26 houses (over a period of 51 years) and in six states. Most of my work history has been in accounting. I took an oil painting class in 1970, a stained glass class in 1978, and a watercolor class in I attended the Art Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for one semester but then we moved to Wichita, Kansas. In 1993 I went to work for a stained glass studio, and then I started my own business doing stained glass. I continued this until 2014, when my shoulder and hands could no longer manage cutting and lifting the glass. I ve taken up machine quilting as it is definitely a lot like stained glass.

6 Page 6 PAUL JACKSON Watercolor Workshop The Illusion of Glass Paul Jackson is a featured artist in the current issue of Watercolor Artist magazine (April 2016). He is shown with his magnificent watercolor of the bridges over the Danube River in Budapest, Hungary. This painting, which measures 5 x10, required a special size watercolor paper manufactured especially for him by Fabriano Paper Company in Italy. The article interviews Paul about his process of creating this painting, and he shares some moments of terror he experienced while it was in progress. Paul is also well known for his paintings of glassware as shown in the photo. Central Kentucky Art Guild is very proud to have him schedule a workshop with us, and since there are already several people who have expressed an interest in being a part of this experience, please do not delay in making your decision to attend.
