1 WILTWYCK QUILTERS GUILD NEWSLETTER October 2016 Volume 41 Issue 2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE NEXT GUILD MEETING Saturday, October 15, 2016 GRACE COMMUNITY CHURCH 160 SEREMMA CT. LAKE KATRINE, NY :30 10:00 for coffee, tea and snacks Items to bring to the October meeting: Name Tag (wear it and get a raffle ticket) Show and tell items TREATS All members are asked to bring a snack to the monthly meeting. The Hospitality schedule for the year is as follows, according to the first letter of your last name. October U, V, W, X; November Y, C, D; January A, B, Z; February E, F, R; March G,H; April J,K,L; May M, N, O; June P, Q, I. 1 Wow! 94 people at our September meeting. That's the highest attendance I recall during the years I have been a guild member. This is great, but makes me think about how hard it might be for new members to feel comfortable in such a big group As much as we all like to chat with our friends we really do need to remember to be more inclusive. So my goal for the guild this year is to collect more suggestions then create a system that provides the support for new members that we have been working towards for a while now. We really need a variety of people to support our craft. On another note, please, if you haven't volunteered to help at the October show do so ASAP and sign up for a guild committee. This year we will again have an old fashioned Quilt Turning occurring at the show. The quilts are stacked on top of each other, then held up one at a time while being discussed. Please consider having a quilt or wall hanging be a part of the Quilt Turning. I would like as many as possible. I hope to collect all the quilts for this activity at the September Meeting or during the October 4 drop off. Your quilt will be returned at the end of the bed turning, or at the October guild meeting. If you are interested, bring the quilts to the Sept meeting. If you have questions, contact Pat Clark ( preferred) (clrkquilt@yahoo.com or Also, please turn in a sheet of paper with additional helpful information including the name of the quilt top, maker, the quilter if different, and the year made. Include any other interesting information to share with the audience such as whether it was for a gift/occasion or any special technique used, any names of unusual patterns, or a personal story of its significance. Also, I would like 3 4 volunteers to help in holding the quilts during the show on Sunday at 2:00 PM. If you can do this, please let Pat Clark know. Charm Squares Sue Stepp / Pat Clark This year we've decided to ask for specific prints as opposed to colors. Following are the themes for the year: 3
4 Oct - Oriental Nov - batik Dec - glitz (with silver/gold) Jan - white on white Feb - small calico Mar - green leaves Apr - large floral May 's reprise Jun - polka dots (any size) The following quilters have signed up for October: Assimus*, Cahill*, Clark*, Conlon*, Giardullo*, Kessenich*, Luby*, McLaughlin*, Pabon*, Rowell*, Sittner*, Stepp*, Urbon*, Williams*. Names with an '*' have signed up for the entire year. If you anticipate participating all season long, please place a star next to your name on next month's sign-up sheet. Those who want to sign up month by month are welcome to participate. Everyone is welcome to sign up for individual months if you're interested in collecting fabrics of the established theme. Fabric cut for the squares should be pre-washed, without selvages. Squares should be cut precisely 6 1/2" by 6 1/2", so that they can be readily used. The colors/themes will be different every month. Unless called for, please don't use novelty fabrics. The squares will fit nicely into a one-quart Ziploc- type baggie, so please bring one with your name on it. Place your squares on top, and we will distribute your fabric and return your baggie to you filled with all the different fabrics! 5 Membership Benefit Now that folks have renewed their membership, they can get a Joann Fabric Store VIP Discount Card. The card gives a 10% discount on regular and sale-priced items (it can't be combined with another coupon, however), both in stores and online at Joann.com.. You need to show Your membership card plus a photo ID. You can apply online, but still need to go into the store to activate it, so personally I would skip the online step. The card needs to be renewed annually. Call for Art Utilitarian Art Catskill Center s Erpf Gallery Submissions Due: October 28 Exhibit: Saturday, December 3 - Saturday, January 21, 2017 Many of the products we use every day are not only useful, but should be considered beautiful. Homemade furniture, clothing, baskets, stained glass, pottery, quilts so many items we depend on for everyday use could be on display as art. Each submission should be accompanied by a brief artist statement. One person can submit up to five works for consideration. Other information Requested: Artist name, mailing address, phone number, address, medium, dimensions, price, and a brief bio. Submissions and questions should be sent to Katie at Kpalm@catskillcenter.org. The first item of business was a request for a volunteer to organize the Mystery Quilt for this year. A quilt was displayed that had been made by the guild for the church and was presented to the pastor. Pictures were taken and Te thanked the guild for their efforts. Committee Reports: Program: It was reported that the programs are set for this year, Kathryn Greenwold is the speaker for today. She will discuss quilts made in NYS over the last 200 years and include a trunk show. October there is no program, November will be a quilted bag by Shelly Greener. December will be our holiday luncheon. January is community service. February will be in house workshops and volunteers are needed. March will be a work shop on Featherweight maintenance. April will be Karen Eckmeier. May will be a vest class and June will be our end of season party. Treasurer: There is a balance of $14, in the general fund. Hospitality: no report Librarian: No report Show Committee: An urgent call from Jackie was made for volunteers to transport quilts. A request was made for ladders, heavy duty extension cords, battery drills, and folding tables. There is still a need for someone to run the scavenger hunt. Men and boys are needed to help set up on Friday and take down on Sunday. Please note the following schedule. Drop off of quilts will be Tuesday 10/4 from 1 to 7pm. Wednesday judging will start at 9 AM. Friday quilts will be taken to the show. Transporters should be at the church by 1:15 to pick up quilts and will drop off at Roundout School at 2:30. Gloria Frenza and Marquita Rich have volunteered to help with this. Sarah has asked that everyone send an to their address books regarding the show. She feels we may increase the number of people that attend. Quilt show signs are in the back of the church, anyone that can should take some to distribute. Permission of land owners is required to place the signs. Regina asks that raffle baskets be left at the church for transport on Friday or brought to the show on Saturday. Pat Clark needs more volunteers for the bed turning. Yoyos will be taken to Deb Martin by Susan Gray. Anyone working with judges will receive an from the committee.
