I am in the process of adding new things to the store and web site, so that you can keep up to date while you are away or travelling this summer. The Columbus show was just over and so there will be great new canvases, embellishments, accessories as well as new books. Take a look around on the newsletter and the website to see if anything interests you and give us a call for the details. Don t forget about our Finishing Special July 1-25 with 10% off any finishing you bring or send in to the shop. This is a little incentive to get a project or some gifts done early at a savings. 4 Your Finicky Finisher You know me I am your needlepoint finisher. I m the person you trust to turn your stitched canvas into something useful, beautiful, or meaningful. I am a needlepoint person just like you. Just like you, I stitch whenever I get the chance. 15 minutes early for an appointment? Fill in a little background. Lunch cancelled? Stitch a little on the gift I m making for my sister. Yes, I m nuts for needlepoint. (And YES, I have a stash like yours an entire room in my home is dedicated to needlepoint!) So when you complete the stitching on your project and turn it in to be finished an ornament, a glasses case, a standing figure, a special gift, or something else that exists in your imagination I m the artist who makes it happen! I am entrusted with your precious work. It must be a little frightening to hand over hours and hours of your time and so much of your creative talent to someone you have never even met! You trust your needlepoint store to choose a finisher who is responsible and reliable; someone who has a proven record of high quality work and experience in finishing the type of project that you want. I am very much aware that I have a huge responsibility to carefully turn your finished canvas into a lovely finished product. I take the responsibility very seriously. Please know that my goal is to add to the work you do my finish work should never overwhelm or take attention away from your creation; I just enrich what you have done. My friend calls me a magician. She says I give needlepoint pieces personality and make them come alive. (She s my biggest fan!) Part of my job (I hesitate to call it a real JOB, because I enjoy what I do so very much) is selecting the materials that will enhance what you have stitched. I shop, shop, shop for the perfect fabric, lace, trim, twisted-cord fibers and tassels. I frequent the well-known fabric stores and some unusual stores as well. Home improvement stores, second-hand shops and fabric outlets are all equal in my eyes. I am always on the lookout for a new and unusual material or trinket that I can use in my finishing. And because color is such an important part of the finished product, I take time to find the perfect match for your project. Sometimes that wonderful background color that you found for your work is perfect but not easy for me to match, or the appropriate fabric pattern or trim style is difficult to find in the right scale. So if I sometimes take a little longer to finish your piece, please know that I am giving every aspect of the work my full attention. Also, some months of the year are very busy for finishing and some are traditionally not so busy that is why Quail Run has published deadlines for holiday finishing. That allows me the time I need to do the fine detailed work that pleases us both. Thank you for your trust in me, and thank you for allowing me to see all the wonderful pieces that you have stitched. Every week I look forward to seeing the new projects that are waiting for my touch. It s very exciting! And what a wonderful sense of completion I feel when I return your finished pieces. 6 Your Finicky Finisher Pieces done by Your Finicky Finisher Although very different in nature, all three of these pieces have one thing in common they were totally stitched in the old standby, tent stitch. Rather than employing enhancement stitches to make these canvases spectacular, finishing was used instead. All pieces done by shop owner Susan Barlow and are in display at the shop.

7 July Trunk Shows Needle Crossings describes themselves as providing painted canvases with a whimsical touch. To name a few, themes include seashore life, colorful flowers, comical cats, plus architecture and locales of historical significance.

8 Stitching Guidelines These words of wisdom come from Deborah Lundgren, Featured Stitcher in Quail Run s June newsletter. 1 Accumulate as many canvasses as possible. You CAN take them with you just order a double-wide for your trip to the hereafter. 2 As Alice Hall puts it, don t DNA your thread. Spitting on your thread to put it into the needle or to control the static cling, only leaves a tasty or smelly deposit for future creatures to have a bite. And goodness knows, lipstick stains usually don t do a lot for the design. 3 Enjoy every piece. Live it before you start on it, relish each stitch, admire it when you ve finished. If not, don t waste your time. 4 If you make the mistake of buying something you don t really like, donate it and know you are benefitting someone else. Sometimes even keeping something you know you will never tackle gets added to the collection and years from now you can look back and see what changes have happened in the design world. 5 Take as many classes as feasible. Every stitching teacher has a technique that can become a part of your repertoire of experience. Ideas from fellow students will also contribute to your knowledge. 6 No matter if you are a novice or an expert, keep an open mind for newer, better, or easier suggestions. 7 Don t be concerned if you don t finish a piece. I call those attempts practice samplers. The greatest canvas I ever saw was only partially completed. The opportunity to see how the work was originally done was its beauty. 8 I never fail to learn something new every day. Happy stitching. Quail Run thanks Deborah for her contribution. Canvases brought in for finishing between July 1st and July 25th will receive a 10% discount. Canvases can be brought in or mailed in. Discount applies to all finishing, not just holiday ornaments. Discount does not apply to pieces which require monogramming or embroidery. A Canvas Comes to Light In the next few months, we will bring you a new article that we are calling A Canvas Comes to Light. Reminiscent of early novels that were written in serial form, this feature will be a classroom/stitch guide presented in monthly segments. We ll discuss canvas selection, fiber and stitch options, technique, as well as finishing. You can stitch along or use the information as a guide or inspiration for your own project. 10 Not To Be Missed The Princess and Me was one of our June trunk shows. If whimsical is your style, this show should be at the top of your list. Although no longer in the store, we like to include Not to Be Missed which displays the finished models sent by the designers along with the previous month s trunk shows. At times we get a glimpse at how a seemingly ordinary canvas can become spectacular! At other times, we are inspired or gleam a finishing idea for our own projects. Susan

11 Upcoming Ornament of the Month Classes Ornament of the Month classes are a collection of unique projects employing a broad variety of needlework techniques. Projects are designed to be quick and easy to complete. July August Susan Portra is a nationally known needlepoint designer who focuses on geometric designs. Example of mini-bag finished. Mini Shopping Bag How sweet and festive are these mini-bags! The Christmas tree design will be used for our class project. Use you bag to present a special holiday gift, or hang it on the tree. The chart will have designs for 6 different bags. These bags come from designer Carolyn Mitchell. Canvas size is 9x11 on white opalescence canvas. This particular Portra design is number 13 in a series, entitled Cabochon. This charted needlepoint piece measures 8x10. Ornament of the Month classes are held the 3rd Saturday of each month. Canvas, fibers and instructional material are included in all classes. Seating is limited so early sign-up is recommended. Beat the Heat Class Summer Sampler Class This is a great project. Using an 8 square canvas, you will employ classic stitches, trame and darning patterns. Fibers include silk, cotton and metallic threads. The sample is done in ivory, but you will choose your own custom colors. This class provides you an opportunity to learn new techniques and thread uses, and to polish your stitching skills.
