Barlow From Susan s Desk T he summer months are flying by and it is hard to believe school will be back in session in a few weeks. I hope you have had time to sit and stitch on your favorite project, finish or start a new one or just ponder what threads and stitches you will use on that next great canvas. There were wonderful stitched pieces sent by many of you to take advantage of our July Finishing Sale. It is so much fun to see what you have stitched and then to see the item when it comes back from the finisher. Just a reminder of the finishing deadlines for the holidays: Small Items - ornaments, standups, bookmarks etc. For Hanukkah: by November 23,,2011 For Christmas: by December 1, 2011 Large items - pillows, stockings, etc. For Hanukkah: by September 17, 2011 For Christmas: by September 26, 2011 Sandy Arthur, teacher and author of the Shapes of Needlepoint" books will be here to teach her "At the Beach" class. Her use of stitches and threads is creative and fun. Book II of her series, will be out mid August and it is on order. I hope you will check out the information in this newsletter and sign up for Sandy's class. The shop has new threads for you to try Princess Perle which is similar in size to a size 5 perle cotton. This is a silk perle in 139 beautiful colors! To compliment the threads, we have all the Glorianna ribbons which match the silk floss. The ribbons come in two sizes, 4mm and 7 mm. I have used these on a sunflower design and they gave the canvas great color and dimension. Stop in and we would be glad to show you some great silk ribbon techniques for your canvas. To add that bling, there are small and large sequins in 39 colors as well as in 18 different shapes. I have already used the gold stars on a Christmas ornament and the small sequins in white and red on a canvas instead of French knots. I am always on the hunt for these unique items as another way to embellish your canvas. Ashley Bradley's special designs are featured in her trunk show this month. These are small, portable projects that you will enjoy stitching. The new Quail Run Designs by Pam Hobbs are arriving, as are the Christmas and Halloween cactus designs. There are new ASU and U of A ornaments and mini stockings and a new Arizona mini stocking. I also have found a lovely wood dish to hold keys, coins or whatever with an area in the middle just perfect for the round ASU or U of A ornament which makes great gift that you can finish yourself. 2 Needle Arts Desert Rows Smocking Guild We often get tunnel vision when it comes to our craft. We think needlework translates to needlepoint. But, in fact, needlework is so much more. That point was recently driven home when a few ladies stopped by the shop in search of a special fiber not for needlepoint, but for a smocking project. They were members of Phoenix s Desert Rows Smocking Guild. They shared a few pictures that showed their amazing talents and brought back memories of my own childhood being dressed in that very special smocked dress that was so carefully hand washed and ironed. I asked if we could share their information with our readers and they were kind enough to provide the below pictures and extend an open invitation to anyone who is interested in putting their needle to a little different use. Susan Barb Tingom, president of the guild writes: We at Desert Rows Smocking Guild would love to have you come and join us. We have been a guild for over 28 years here in the valley. We are meeting at QuiltZ (13825 N. 32 nd St., Phx.) on the 2 nd Thursday of the month at 6:30-8:30 PM, during the fall through spring seasons. We also meet at a home for Sit N Sew s during the summer and the rest of the year. We love all stitching. We specifically work on learning smocking and making heirloom children s clothing although we do much more. We make wee care gowns for hospitals also.
