1 VOLUME 14 NO September 2009 Business Meeting Wednesday, September 2, 2009 General Meetings Tuesday, September 8, :00 PM Wednesday, September 9, :30 AM Our guest speaker is Flavin Glover of Auburn Georgia. Flavin is a quilt designer and teacher with a degree in Clothing, Textiles and Related Arts from Auburn University. Innovative Log Cabin and geometric patchwork quilts composed of many fabrics in vibrant colors have become her trademark. She has created numerous quilts inspired from landscapes and architecture. Flavin s quilt, Row Houses, was named one of the 100 Best Quilts of the 20th Century. She will present her lecture, The Care and Feeding of the Patchwork Design at the General meetings on September 8th and 9th. Workshop September 10 Introduction to Kaleidoscope Patchwork Workshop September 11 Innovative Log Cabin Courthouse Steps MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Hello members! It's back to school time in Tucson already, and soon will be 'back to Tucson time' with the return of our winter visitors. Soon our meeting rooms will be packed, our classes full, and people preparing for our show. We will be renewing friendships and remembering those who have passed. Our guild is growing each and every month. Just think, if every member entered a quilt in our show we'd have to expand to the 3rd hall! I've had a pretty good summer. Contrary to what I posted last month, we did NOT travel to Seattle. My husband's plans were changed, so who knows, I might be there during a meeting in September! Fortunately I was able to visit the Quilt-A-Thon in August. What a beehive of activity! Be sure you watch for an article in the newspaper that features the TQG Quilt A Thon and an interview with Flora and Pam. I wasn't able to stay all day as my High School son needed supplies and clothes for the start of his school the next day. I thank each and every one of you who participated in this wonderful annual event. I'm hoping to see lots of entries for the President's challenge, 'Orange You Glad'. I've heard rumors of several, so don't be shy. The entry forms are on the website. Here's to a great September!! Kathy Harris President

Please let Colleen Babcock, Membership chair know if you can make the event, cjquilts@att.net or Please leave pets at home BED TURNING Do you own a vintage quilt from Grandmother's attic? The Bed-Turning Committee will be honored to share your heirloom as part of Quilt Fiesta s 2010 Bed-Turning. Your quilts will be treated with respect and handled with strict security. Quilters make quilts for many reasons. Perhaps some of your treasured heirlooms were made not only to celebrate, but also to enable someone to manage trying events. The stories of your quilts are important to share. Please contact Sue Franklin at or suevette63@comcast.net, or Kay Long at or kelong@q.com with questions. Applications to submit a quilt for the Bed-Turning will be available at the September meetings. The deadline to submit your application is November 11th. We look forward to hearing from you! CENTRAL ARIZONA QUILT PROJECT The Arizona Centennial Quilt Project is looking for volunteers to help in several different areas of the Project. We need people to help with the design, planning, and construction of this large scale project. My initial idea is to have two pictorial quilts, each in the shape of the State of Arizona. Initially, the project will involve several brainstorming meetings to interpret these ideas into an appropriate piece to show the history of Arizona. I have lots of ideas and I need help to implement them. Please let me know what skills you can bring to this Project. me at wrseale@q.com with your initial ideas, and include your phone number and address. Our initial meeting will be in Phoenix sometime in September. Wanda Seale 3

At 11:00 a.m. the Silent Auction will close, and at 1:30 p.m. the Live Auction will begin. Join us for a very exciting afternoon in the Marshall Auditorium at the Tucson Medical Center. You may view the silent auction quilts throughout the hallways of TMC right now. Invite your friends to come with you and place a bid. GREAT NEWS!!! You may know that this year s auction proceeds will be distributed: 80% to the TMC Foundation and 20% to the St. Elizabeth of Hungary Clinic. Our contact at St. Elizabeth s told us about a working Mom who could not afford to pay her health insurance through her employer. She has three children, and right after her last baby was born, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was awaiting surgery for a double mastectomy and treatment, but St. Elizabeth s ran out of resources. Our Board of Director s quickly came to a decision to help them out NOW by presenting a check to St. Elizabeth s for $7,000 to help in this emergency. They will receive another check after the auction. This is what your donation of quilts is all about. THANK YOU SO MUCH! With the proceeds that the TMC Foundation receives from Quilt for a Cause, they too will find a specific grant that is in accordance with our Mission Statement. Handmade quilts will be used as a vehicle to fund research for breast and/or gynecological cancers, to further the education of medical professionals who treat women with breast and/or gynecological cancers, and to raise awareness in women for prevention and detection of breast and/or gynecological cancer. We are still searching for 50 volunteers to help with many jobs at the Auction on October 3. On that day, we will meet in the Marshall Auditorium where the Live Auction will take place. Please contact Janet Downing at janethdown@yahoo.com or phone her at if you can help at the auction. Be sure to check the Quilt Gallery on our website See you at the Auction!!! Jeannie Coleman

6 BLOCK OF THE MONTH At our busy Quiltathon meetings in August, we displayed your scrappy "Brick Boxes" blocks on the stage, for all to see while they worked. On Tuesday, Vickie Oberg won 13, and on Wednesday, we had two winners: Judy Edison and Diane Bach each won 19! Congratulations, ladies! At our September meetings, we'll have the drawings for your "Bright Scrappy Chain" blocks. This pattern was in last month's newsletter. It's an easy, triple 4-patch, and it's a fun way to use up those brightest scraps. Why not make a block (or more!) and enter the September drawing--you might be a lucky winner. These blocks would make a great kid's quilt! And, in this newsletter is the pattern for "Gathering Basket", for our October drawings. You could use strips of fall colors, autumn prints with leaves, vegetables, etc., and maybe throw in something unexpected. Who knows what you might gather into your big basket? This pattern will make two blocks, using a strippy method on a muslin foundation. Keep one, or enter both, in October! See you at the Block of the Month table, where we always have free patterns for you. Also, we still have some Pattern Sets, from previous years, for only $5 per year, with a color cover. What a deal! If you're a new member, be sure to check it out, and learn more about Block of the Month. Evelyn George and Kay Hendricks KID S ROW Did you help a young quilter this summer? Do you know a young quilter who d like to have the whole world (a whole bunch of folks, anyway) see their great work? We d love to show it off at the Quilt Fiesta this January! Kids Row entry forms are available on-line from our website (click on Quilt Fiesta and look for the link), or call me and I ll mail one. Quilters 17 and under are eligible to enter a quilt, pillow, or other quilted project they ve made, and every entrant will receive a gift. Questions? Call Laura Cotter FOR SALE Elna Quilters Dream Great condition, lots of features. Good little workhorse machine. Has several feet including walking foot. $300 OBO. Contact Kathy Harris at or ksquilts@msn.com GET ON THE LIST!! Do you...longarm, repair vintage quilts, make custom quilts, t-shirt quilts, embroider labels, etc.? Please submit your contact info and a reference we can call to me at : president@tucsonquiltersguild.com. I'd like to compile a list to add to our website in the future. You must be a guild member to be on the list. Kathy Harris TUESDAY NIGHT MEETING TIME DISCUSSION We have received the suggestion that the evening Guild meetings change their starting time to 6:30pm. This will allow those who work to get home a little earlier. This will be an item of discussion at the September evening Guild meeting.
