The large pair of birds was often a prominent feature. The original was stitched on canvas with wool. I would stress that people need to pay attention to the chart when stitching the border. The flowers are not all the same. I'm just thrilled that it made its way over from Wales to a Wisconsin antique shop to my home in the Desert Southwest. Of course we did a conversion to overdyed silks, pictured below, on the linen Tanya chose for her reproduction. The

It s very confusing even for those of us who live here, but it s the way it is and, no matter how long I live here, I find it difficult to adapt when everyone else s time changes and ours doesn t. But, as they say, it is what it is!!! Saturday, April 6, 10:30-12:30, Beginning Linen This class is appropriate for both beginning stitchers and anyone wishing to refine their skills. The class project is Linda s Tulip needlebook design, and the $30 fee includes her expert instruction + all project materials. Saturday, April 13 ~ Tentatively scheduled for the afternoon, a Meet n Greet with Linda Barry, Elizabethan Treasures designer. April s Sampler Sunday ~ With the upcoming move, the next Sampler Sunday may not happen until May. I m taking it one week at a time. Stitching on Silk Gauze ~ The new releases from Erica Michaels reminded me that it s time to schedule another class ~ the date & time will be announced next time, after I check Rhonda s schedule. Her presence at these classes has become essential, with all of her silk-gauze models! No date yet! A Word or Two About Margins We custom-cut our hand-dyed linens as much as possible (which means it usually works, unless it leaves us with an unusable piece), and we recommend 2-inch margins. Why? Why not 3 inches? Because we d like to save you some money, for perhaps another cool needlework project or tool and, truthfully, you really don t need 3 inches, except when using mats, and then skirting the piece for mounting purposes works very nicely! Sandy, our in-house framer, cuts off the extra margin width for ease in mounting. For our sampler framing we prefer a small amount of linen showing between the needlework and frame. To give you an idea of the extra money that extra inch all around costs, on an average size sampler, say, 18 x 20, that extra inch of margin with a hand-dyed linen costs an additional $6. Multiply that by a few samplers and it quickly adds up to quite a lot! The Attic is moving... Stuffed Stand-Up, Postponed ~ watch for new date. Here s another class that several of you have been asking for. Christy has scheduled it, and we hope this date and time will work with yours. Class fee includes instruction and all finishing materials except your chosen backing fabric (bring sewing thread to match as well). Fee $30. November 23, 2013 ~ Our 16th Annual Silent Auction for Breast Cancer Research, 6-8 pm, at The Gathering Place, 1837 West Guadalupe, Suite 107, Mesa. We still have some BCRF cookbooks left. Support a great cause (all net proceeds go to breast cancer research) by buying a copy(s) of the Recipes for a Cure cookbook for a donation of $14.95 (or more) with fabulous time-tested recipes as well as complimentary designs from 11 designers.... at the end of April to our new home at 1837 West Guadalupe Road, Suite 109, Mesa, AZ, in The Pavilions, right next door to Tess s Gathering Place where the BCRF Silent Auction was held ~ and where there are some other great restaurants, including the Cornish Pasty Company, Native New Yorker, Pink Pepper Thai, Serrano s Mexican, and coming soon Auntie Pasto s Italian, as well as a favorite Mesa gift shop, Tillie s Attic, and much more! Our current plan is that we will close on Saturday, April 27, at the McKellips Road location and reopen on Tuesday, May 7, at our new shop! And, of course, we will have a HUGE Moving Sale in April.

4 THE ATTIC! PAGE 4 ATS Saxony Sampler Seeing the original antique of this Sampler from Saxony, ATS 1871 from Gigi R Collection Privée, was one of the highlights of my Nashville trip. Gigi brought it in her suitcase! It has a stitch count of 237w x 670h ~ we ve ordered special cuts of linen for it, a beautiful vintage color from Lakeside Linens, and it will be available in special cut lengths to accommodate the length (33.5 on 40c, 37.2 on 36c). We ve also ordered it in 45c, but I haven t determined that price as of now. Because I know my schedule will be difficult for the next two months with the moving of the shop, I ve already named this a Co-Sampler of the Month for April & May, along with another beautiful sampler that I will show you next time, and will honor the SOM discount now through May. PAGE 5 The verses on Ann Bowers Arise Awake Your Lamps to Take And Do No Longer Slumber You Must Then Trim To Waite on Him Unto His Wedding Chamber * Ann Bowers Her Sampler Made In The 13 Year of Her Age * * W X Y Z Love Thou The Lord And He Will Be A Tender Father Unto The WXY Ann Bowers Our 2013 Attic Stitch-Along Suggested March & April Stitching: Work the alphabet band and the exquisite floral band, the dividing bands that separate them, as well as that portion of the outside borders. (I see that I haven t quite finished that!) The floral band is quite a bit of stitching but, oh, so pleasurable! It is a pure joy to stitch; the colors are wonderful! Because my personal schedule for the next 60 days is going to be very crazy busy with moving the shop, I ve given two months of suggested stitching. As I have it mapped out, we will complete this sampler in November, just in time to have it framed and ready to hang for your Holiday decorating. Several of you who are stitching with DMC have asked about a fix for your ecru color so closely matching the linen. Some people like the tone-on-tone look, but if that s not working for you, select a DMC shade that is a bit darker than the linen so that it shows up to your liking. Holly s Ann Bowers Ann Bowers Sampler Joanne provides the following information in the kit: Ann Bowers was born in Newport on June 18th, She was the daughter of Jonathan Bowers, a builder of boats, and Mary Boss. We know that the family were members of the Quaker Society of Friends in Newport. Perhaps due to the economic devastation experienced in Newport during the American Revolution and the death of her father, Ann and her mother moved to Swansey, Massachusetts in We have no further genealogical information to glean on the remainder of Ann s life. Stitches used in this piece are cross stitch over two threads, cross stitch over one thread, back stitch, satin stitch, Algerian eye, and queen stitch. On 35c linen, sampler size is 9 3/4 x 21 1/2; on 40c linen, 8 1/2 x 18 3/4. The kit is available on 35c linen with DMC ($80) or 35c or 40c linen with silk ($150). I m stitching mine with silk on 40c. It s not too late to join us on this Stitch-Along journey to reproduce Ann Bowers beautiful sampler. Let us know which linen and thread you would like and we ll order your kit so that you can begin! Although we ve had this very charming design in the shop for several weeks, we finally were able to get a silk conversion completed ~ and that makes me want to stitch this now! 11 THE ATTIC! PAGE 11 New Samplers in Our Attic Left,The Essamplaire s Elisabeth Gould $143 kit reproduces a sampler from the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts. Stitches used in the sampler include cross stitch, rice (I love that stitch), back stitch, stem, satin, chain a n d f r e e h a n d embroidery. A full-color picture is included and a drawing to trace onto the linen. Here is The Essamplaire s information about Elisabeth s sampler: Elisabeth s sampler belongs to a group of samplers of which six are known. They were all made in the vicinity of Centreville, Maryland. All of these samplers contain a two-story house with a fence on either side and trees. Elisabeth stitched her sampler at the age of 15 and she was the oldest girl of the six sampler makers to have made her sampler. Her sister, Ann, stitched her sampler at the age of ten and her s is quite similar. Elisabeth was born in Baltimore circa 1792 and was the daughter of Julianna Hawkins Shoebrooks, who died in 1832, and her second husband William Gould, born in William was a farmer and at the time of his death in 1817 his estate was worth $6,000. Elisabeth married in 1811 to Captain John Alexander of Baltimore.
