1 Where Samplers Rule Just 15 minutes from the Airport at the SE CORNER OF DOBSON & GUADALUPE 1837 W Guadalupe Rd, Suite 109 Mesa, AZ TELEPHONE (480) TOLL-FREE ATTIC THE ATTIC 2016 November 15 No. BCRF-1 It s almost time... Saturday night, November 19, 6 ~ 8 PM for our 19th Annual Breast Cancer Benefit, with all proceeds going to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Go to to read more about this organization. We chose this Foundation as the recipient of your donations because of its very low percentage of administrative costs, where 91 cents of every dollar spent by BCRF is directed towards breast cancer research and awareness programs. BCRF is the only breast cancer organization to hold an A+ rating from CharityWatch (formerly American Institute of Philanthropy). Go to Charity Navigator to read their report on BCRF. Kudos to Alice! There are so many people who contribute to the success of this event, including hundreds of needleworkers from around the globe whose work you are about to see, but there is one generous and kind woman who is, I know, uncomfortable receiving any kind of recognition, but I know that you d want to know that this breast-cancer survivor, as she has done each year for the past number of years, has made and donated the first 51 items (typically it s 50, but she lost count and did more!) that you are about to see. I know you will agree that she is an incredibly gifted needlewoman, a survivor whose gift with her needle is an inspiration to all of us. Thank you, Alice, for your unselfish donation of hundreds, perhaps thousands, of hours of needlework. All of us admire not only your strength, courage, and tenacity in beating this disease but your unparalleled talent and generosity in producing and donating your eclectic group of items for this event. As you will see as you view these donations, Alice alone is responsible for raising thousands! And this is an annual gift that she gives to this Benefit. I m sure you re not surprised to learn that she s already working on next year s donations. How to Bid I have included what the committee of volunteers established as a Minimum Opening Bid (MOB), but please know that the items frequently go for many times the amount of the opening bid. Because we really aren't set up for ongoing long-distance bidding on items, if you see something that you really want, you may ensure your getting it by placing what you regard as a "Buy It Now" bid, i.e., one that may discourage others from outbidding you, knowing that all the proceeds go to a very worthy cause. And, of course, you may contact us again to place a higher bid. In years past, bidders have, for example, selected an item or items that they really want and, based on their budget, placed bids of, say, $200 or $300. To place a qualified bid, we must have your credit card information on file. When you place a bid, please provide telephone number(s) and credit card information, although we truly prefer you to send your check for your successful bid items. If you wish, you may make your check for more. And some of you simply send a donation via a check payable to BCRF, to include in our event total! Payment is preferred by check, made payable to BCRF. However, we will process your bids by credit card, if necessary; thus, the reason we need your credit card on file for all qualified bids. And on Saturday evening, November19, from 6-8 PM, final bids will be placed while you enjoy some delicious Seasonal treats and refreshments. It's a very festive and fun evening, and we hope you will plan to be with us. Until then you may place your bids, either by or by phone (toll-free at ATTIC/ or locally, ).
2 THE ATTIC From the Private Collection of Gigi R PAGE 2 Here is Item 52, and the MOB is $600. To answer questions from many of you about this amazing stitched wall-hanging featuring a number of Quaker samplers, Gigi provided this information: First of all I am delighted and honoured to be able to be part of the Attic's fundraiser. What inspired me? At a certain moment when I thought of the idea of stitching a Quaker sheet, it was that time when everything seemed to revolve around "anything and everything quaker. Did I stitch all of it? I would love to say yes but it is not so. We were about four including Hilde from Flanders who did the layout must definitely not forget her because that was very important. The two others have now retired from the stitching world. I did, however, ask to see what was going to be each one s contribution. Insisting it must be stitched in blue for harmony, I left the gate open as to their choice of thread, but I had one thing that I knew I wanted included and that was the Ruler by Gloria Moore because I loved that from the moment I saw it. And the little touch of colour appealed to me. I also included this, that, and the other to fill in some open gaps. For example, the Trees, as I call them. I loved those so much I even used them in some of my GigiR Belles Lettres. The sheet is from bolts of antique linen I bought in Tongres, Belgium where the largest flea market is held on Sunday mornings. Our friend Bhooma requested a little sampler and then proceeded to buy quite a big bit. Similar linen but not antique can be bought in Paris at LAIK shop at Marché St Pierre but does not have the same old look.
3 THE ATTIC Close-Ups of the Quaker Sheet PAGE 3 I love the tree with the two stags beneath it ~ and above is the Quaker ruler from Gloria Moore/Milady s Needle that Gigi specifically wanted to be included.
4 THE ATTIC PAGE 4 This event has grown considerably these past 19 years. The first year we raised about $1500. This year our goal is many times that. When it began, it was staffed by the Attic's staff, and still is for the most part at Saturday night s party ~ but there are so many of you now who volunteer your time to help make this happen. It wouldn't happen without you, most especially these special ladies, who have very personal reasons for wanting to support the research projects from BCRF: For weeks Linda and Sheri, sometimes assisted by Betsy and Hope, have been spending days in the shop recording/registering and numbering the donations, and Linda also spent many more hours photographing and editing the images for this BCRF newsletter for all of you to see ~ and BID ON! This Year s Opportunity Drawing Donation comes to us from the Mississippi River Sampler Guild. They chose Plum Street Samplers 12 Days of Christmas as their BCRF Silent Auction project for this year. Purchase opportunity tickets for $1 each, or 6 for $5, or 12 for $10, or 24 for $20... or 120 for $100! With the help of dear Tess and her husband Allen and the kindness and generosity of Pastor Rudy & Jennie, this year the auction will be held at Proclaim Church, which is two doors to the west of The Attic, conveniently located a mile east of Loop 101 on Guadalupe Road. Final bidding (with wonderful Costco-prepared hors d'oeuvres and refreshments) from 6 ~ 8 PM on Saturday night, November 19. Bidding closes promptly at 8 PM. Mark your calendars now and plan to be with us for our 19th Annual BCRF Benefit ~ and help raise funds for breast cancer research!
