7 Color the pictures below. It is told that Christmas started when the Wise Men brought gifts to the Christ Child. Today gifts are wrapped in pretty paper and tied with beautiful ribbons around them. Every year people give gifts to family and friends at Christmas. People spend many hours shopping for special gifts. 4

8 One of the most beautiful customs during the season is the Christmas tree. Add decorations and color the tree below. Draw gifts below the tree. 5

9 The Christmas tree is a custom brought to America from Germany. Today people setup Christmas trees in their homes. The first trees in the United States were decorated with candy canes and paper ornaments. Today people trim the trees with colorful lights, bulbs, cookies, popcorn, tinsel, and other pretty decorations. Most Christmas trees today are artificial. People like them because they can use them year after year. Before artificial trees became popular people bought various types of evergreen trees. The most popular evergreen was the fir tree. It would keep its pretty green color and would not shed the needles as quickly as other evergreens. Many stores, towns and cities decorate trees outdoors for the public to see. The National Christmas Tree in the United States is placed on the South Lawn of the White House. Usually, the president or a member of First Family will push the button to light the tree. The old tradition of when people put up the Christmas trees was on Christmas Eve the 24th of December. Today trees are put up in stores and cities before Thanksgiving. Christmas advertisements are seen on television and holiday songs are heard on the radio weeks before Christmas. Read each sentence below. Fill in the missing word. 1. 10 Christmas carols are sung at Christmas time. Carols are sung that have been sung for many, many years. 7

11 One of the most popular carols is Silent Night. Today grown-ups and children go from house to house singing Christmas carols. Many carolers sing to sick people in the hospitals and the elderly in nursing homes. It brings joy and happiness to many. Color the picture below. 8

12 The first Christmas cards were made over one hundred years ago. An Englishman had pictures painted on cards and gave them to friends for Christmas. Soon other people began sending cards to friends. Today people everywhere send cards to wish friends and family a Merry Christmas. Color the pictures. Write a Christmas note on the card. 9

13 One popular Christmas decoration is the candle. People decorate their homes with red and green candles. They put colorful decorations around the bottom of the candles. Color the picture. 10

14 Christmas trees are not the only plant used for decoration during the Christmas season. There may be pine cones hanging on the wreaths. The poinsettia comes from Mexico. The poinsettia plant grows beautiful red flowers. It also has other colors, but red is the favorite for the Christmas season. The holly plant has spiked leaves and grows bright red berries. The colors of Christmas are red and green. Wreaths are a favorite Christmas decoration. Some wreaths are made out of pine tree branches. 11

15 Clement C. Moore wrote a poem called A Visit From St. Nicholas. He wrote the poem in Color the picture. Many of you know this poem. Many people have memorized the entire poem. Cartoon shows and plays have been made of this poem. The poem begins with Twas the night before Christmas and all through the house not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse... 12

17 Santa Claus is a very special part of Christmas. Many children visit Santa Claus and have their picture taken with him. They make a list and tell Santa Claus what they want for Christmas. Make a list of things you would like to have for Christmas. A favorite Christmas song about Santa Claus starts out with the words Santa Claus is coming to town. A favorite story about Santa Claus is the story about Santa and his reindeer and how Rudolph led Santa s sleigh. 14
