Linda will teach the trim technique shown above. The $35 Class/Teaching Fee will include a kit with everything you will need to learn this technique: 1 yard of trim, 115 antique buttons, 1 ball of ecru crochet thread, a crochet hook, and miscellaneous thread and needles needed to sew the trim to your finished cushion. The supplies you should bring to class: scissors, pins, and the cushion that you have stitched, stuffed, and finished. PAGE 8 BACK TO SCHOOL TIME WITH VICKIE AT SAMPLER SUNDAY It s always a very special Sampler Sunday when we are privileged to have Vickie LoPiccolo Jennett join us and bring not only her palpable enthusiasm for samplers and ABC s and early women s education that always included needlework in many forms, but also her remarkable collection of ephemera that exemplifies her subject matter. The breadth of her collection would fill a museum. ABOUT THE CONTINENTAL STITCH ON LINEN FOR OVER-ONE Right-handed Continental In the last issue I showed you Sampler Cove s Anniversary Sampler and the new 30c Legacy Linen color Pink Clay with the suggestion that this would be perfect for the over-one continental stitch, and that prompted an inquiry from Linda from Pennsylvania, so I thought others of you might have the same questions. Yes, it is a half stitch BUT it differs from a half cross-stitch in one very important way: You stitch the continental stitch from right to left, and that makes the stitch on the back LONGER than the stitch on the front, and it adds a bit of padding to your needlework as well. It also helps avoid the pesky problem of your stitch slipping behind an intersection of the linen. One other very important trick: Always begin a row on the right, i.e., don't do the return journey by coming up in the occupied holes of the above row but, rather, drag your thread on the back over to the right-hand side and stitch. Your stitches will cover the travel thread on the back and add a bit more padding/dimension.
