During October you may save 15% on your purchase of two of the following: chart $35; Lakeside linen (40c w/2-inch margins = $45); overdyed silks + NPI $ OR all NPI $124 Here s a design note from Theresa about her spectacular sampler: "A Maryland Inspiration" was inspired by a sampler I saw several years ago while visiting an exhibit at the Maryland Historical Society with my friend, Pat Hunt. The book, A Maryland Sampling by Gloria Allen, was based on this exhibit. While all the samplers on display were beautiful, there was one in particular, the "Margaret Ogle Sampler, that really intrigued me. I said to Pat, "I hope they will do a reproduction of this sampler, because I just love it." But, as years passed, it never was reproduced. I decided to do a design using the "bones" of the sampler as my guide, in particular the triple border and vertical alphabets. I designed it in July of 2010, started stitching in August, and finished it by Christmas The award from Woodlawn was both a proud and humbling experience as I had never entered anything at Woodlawn prior to this. I am new to designing professionally, but, through the years, have designed for myself, my guild (DVHSG) and stitching friends. I am so pleased that Jean has asked to feature "A Maryland Inspiration" as October's Sampler of the Month and hope that you will enjoy stitching it as much as I did designing and stitching it. The

PAGE 4 Announcing a 2013 Attic Stitch-Along The Ann Bowers Sampler Because I ve wanted to stitch this exquisite Examplarery reproduction for over a decade, I ve decided if I make it a Stitch- Along project for this next year, that may actually happen. Joanne provides the following information in the kit: Ann Bowers was born in Newport on June 18th, She was the daughter of Jonathan Bowers, a Builder of boats, and Mary Boss. We know that the family were members of the Quaker Society of Friends in Newport. Perhaps due to the economic devastation experienced in Newport during the American Revolution and the death of her father, Ann and her mother moved to Swansey, Massachusetts in We have no further genealogical information to glean on the remainder of Ann s life. Stitches used in this piece are cross stitch over two threads, cross stitch over one thread, back stitch, satin stitch, Algerian eye, and queen stitch. On 35c linen, sampler size is 9 3/4 x 21 1/2; on 40c linen, its 8 1/2 x 18 3/4. The kit is available on 35c linen with DMC ($80) or 35c or 40c linen with silk ($150). Anyone joining us on this Stitch-Along will receive several complimentary accessory items to use as we work on this beautiful sampler over the next months, beginning in January Let us know if you d like to join and we ll get your kit to you in plenty of time to begin in the New Year! More Kits from The Examplarery The Ann Turtle Embroideries were completed in the year Today it is quite difficult to find a group of samplers worked by the same individual. The large sampler was reproduced from the Detroit Historical Museum collection; interestingly, the two smaller samplers were completed within eleven days of each other; both of these 6 x 9 samplers are in one kit. Stitches used are cross, satin, and stem. The large 14 x 16 sampler uses similar stitches. The large sampler kit, w/30c cream + DMC, is $48; the two-sampler kit, w/35c cream + DMC is $36.

5 THE ATTIC! PAGE 5 More Kits from The Examplarery Above, Known to many as The Chase Sampler, Mary Starkey s exquisite embroidery is found in Colonial Williamsburg s antique textile collection. Here is what Joanne tells us about this reproduction: It belongs to an early group of Newbury samplers characterized by large and elaborate blue urns, sawtooth bands, bold stylized floral bands, and trefoil borders. The bottom section of Mary s sampler, depicting a heavily laden fruit tree and leaping deer, is another common trait of these Newbury embroideries. Her sampler survives today as a quintessential example of colonial needlework. Our cross-stitch and surface embroidered reproduction includes charts, instructions for transferring pictorial elements, and all materials necessary to complete this wonderful work of art. It measures approximately 17 x 28 and is worked on 40c Lambswool linen in 30 different floss shades. Stitches used: cross, satin, stem, Algerian eye, queen, rice, French knots, New England laid, chain, long-arm cross, and a small darning pattern. Kit w/ 40c linen +30 shades of DMC, $220 Above, The Examplar, a sampler designed by Joanne Harvey, reflects the general elements found in early samplers. Worked in 14 muted tones of bronze, browns, ecrus, rust, teal blue, pewter gray, gold, olive g reen, salmon, mahogany, and antique mauve, it is kitted w/25c natural linen + DMC, $50 Above, Mercy Hopkins Sampler from the Colonial Williamsburg collection. Mercy was 11 years old when she completed her sampler in 1800, one of several inscribed with the school teacher s name, Sarah Shoemaker. The bold sawtooth bands, pine trees, hearts, wideeyed stag and border of queen-stitch strawberries and flowers are some of the similarities worked on Ms. Shoemaker s students work. Stitches: cross, queen, Algerian eye, rice, with some four-sided, satin, and stem stitch. Kit w/27c cream + DMC, $50.

PAGE 6 Below, The Hannah Norton Sampler, from the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities collection, a superb sampler with its strong borders that encompass the banded central format which is enhanced with vibrant colors and is full of elaborate motifs. Kitted w/30c linen + DMC, 13 x 16. Stitches: cross, tent, satin, Algerian eye, back, and other accent stitches. $56 More Kits from The Examplarery Left, The Shepherdess is from the collections of the Margaret Woodbury Strong Museum in Rochester, NY. This elegant piece was done in the mid to late 18th century and brings to us a pastoral scene on a village green. The shepherdess watching her flock is surrounded by a dainty undulating border. The upper portion of the work shows various alphabets and dividing bands. Kitted w/35c linen + DMC in soft pastel shades of greens, salmons, ecrus, browns, blues, violet, and tan. Stitches: cross, Algerian eye, satin, daisy, stem, and tent stitch; a drawing to scale is provided for transferring the lower portion. $56 Above, an original design by Joanne Harvey, here s what she says about The Embroideress : Throughout the centuries, the female spirit has captured the feeling of joy and fulfillment in the needlearts. With the use of the needle and canvas, women have created beauty and visual grace. In this original design we have tried to capture a bit of this feminine spirit as it relates to the needlearts. Right, The Polly Coffin Sampler is from the Nantucket Historical Association collection, and Joanne gives us this information about Polly: She was born on the island of Nantucket on March 16, 1786, and she completed her striking sampler in April 1797, at the age of 11. 8 THE ATTIC! PAGE 8 A Local Artist s Cork Scissors Fobs... What a great use for someone s cork wine-bottle stoppers! Some are decorated with bling (which, unfortunately, doesn t photograph very well), some have scissors and other charms keyed to their decorations; all have a lobster-claw attachment for attachment to your precious scissors. $26 per fob. The artist s statement: Making dazzling corks was conceived of while working at one of the most renowned and glitzy resorts found in the Sonoran Desert. Opening hundreds of wine bottles from all over the world for parties, I was captivated by the differences in corks, from the intricate details to the most simple cork. As the corks piled high and the wine flowed freely, I knew I had to find a more suitable place for these spongy little delights. The custom-made scissor fobs are made using wine corks from all around the world. Each cork scissor fob is handcrafted with a variety of fine materials including charms and Swarovski crystals, keeping in mind its unique and precious characteristics. PAGE 19 New from The Essamplaire Shown in last week s edition in an unusual place, on page 3, I m not sure that it was truly seen by many of you, so here it is again, a new kit on its way from The Essamplaire, E. Gould 1807 $143 And now I have much more information about Elisabeth s sampler, which belongs to a group of six known samplers, all made in the vicinity of Centreville, Maryland. All of these samplers contain a two-story house with a fence on either side and trees. Elisabeth stitched her sampler at the age of 15, the oldest of the six samplermakers. Her sister, Ann, stitched her sampler at the age of ten and hers is quite similar. Elisabeth was born in Baltimore circa 1792 and was the daughter of Julianna Hawkins Shoebrooks, who died in 1832, and her second husband, William Gould, born in William was a farmer, and at the time of his death in 1817 his estate was worth six thousand dollars. Elisabeth married in 1811 to Captain John Alexander of Baltimore. This information is from Gloria Seaman Allen, A Maryland Sampling, Girlhood Embroidery , where you ll find much more interesting information about Elisabeth and her sister Ann and their family. Elisabeth s sampler is in the collection of the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Art, access. no Stitches used are cross stitch, rice, back stitch, stem, satin, chain and freehand embroidery. A full color picture is included with the kit as well as a drawing to trace onto the linen. Coming Soon, $65 Columbia s Daughters, a new book from Gloria Seaman Allen, is another must-have addition to your needlework library. Quoting from the back cover: Columbia's Daughters provides a rich and rewarding view of a fascinating but as yet under-studied center of girlhood education and embroidery production the District of Columbia. In focusing on a single urban region, Dr. Allen takes the study of girlhood education and embroidery to a vibrant new level offering readers a closer focus and greater depth than state-wide surveys. Unique historical circumstances render the District of Columbia unexpectedly fertile ground for investigating a variety of embroidery traditions and their interactions within a relatively confined geographic locale. Dr. Allen s earlier publication (2008), coincidentally, has information about Elisabeth Gould s sampler, above left, as well as the sampler that was Theresa Baird s inspiration for A Maryland Inspiration. In this book Dr. Allen, one of the nation s premier textile scholars, discusses more than 500 samplers and embroideries, most never before published. Reflecting Maryland s rich mix of ethnic and religious cultures, they provide glimpses into the lives of young women from Colonial times to the eve of the Civil War. While I wasn t able to go due to illness, through the wonders of modern technology I was able to keep up with the scoring in Friday night s football game when Tyler s high school team, Joy Christian, defeated Valley Lutheran ~ and photos made me feel like I was there.
