Keynote speaker was Kevin mccotter, Director of corporate Development for chesapeake energy corporation, who spoke on the company's operational results and plans in the haynesville shale and evolving Natural gas Vehicle market. it s exciting to sit back and think of where the oil/energy industry is going to be in the next 10, 20 or even 30 years. take natural gas for instance. 3 VOluME 25, IssuE 3 the lafayette driller PagE 3 PrEsIdENt's letter from PagE 1 Dallas-based company synfuels international peddles a process that converts oil well emissions into the building blocks of plastics or fuel. how it works: the natural gas is cracked with heat into acetylene, a simple hydrocarbon. the acetylene is absorbed by a liquid solvent and then reacted to produce ethylene, a longer hydrocarbon chain that is the starting constituent of many plastics, detergents and other products. when liquid fuel is the goal, then the ethylene is chemically bound together to form even longer hydrocarbon chains that we know as gasoline or kerosene (jet fuel). this process converts roughly 50 percent of the natural gas to acetylene the other half is burned for the heat that drives the process. how about Natural gas Vehicles (NgVs)? Based on a report from NgV America there are more than 120,000 NgVs on U.s. roads today and more than 8.7 million worldwide. there are more than 1,100 NgV fueling stations in the United states more than half are available for public use. Natural gas costs, on average, one-third less than conventional gasoline at the pump. more than 50 different manufacturers produce 150 models of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles and engines. roughly 22 percent of all new transit bus orders are for natural gas. this list of opportunities for natural gas travels way beyond just gasoline and vehicles. in fact, as new technology becomes readily available, it will gradually expand to every aspect of the energy market. so what am i trying to say with this? imagine how crazy we would have thought a person to be if they would have said 30 or even 20 years ago, that in the year 2000 we would start to see a dramatic shift in the oil and gas industry. that oil and gas companies would radically change their images to energy companies. that natural gas would become a profitable and resourceful fossil fuel. that new technology would be available to profitably convert natural gas to gasoline. that there would be natural gas vehicles and that they would slowly transition into the transportation market. how crazy would we have thought that person to be? well, ladies and gentlemen, as in the Brad paisley song, Welcome to the future!
