As we start off the new year, I hope this message finds you and your families in great health and in restful spirits after the 2009 holiday season. First things first, on behalf of AADE, I would like to offer our sincere thanks to Debbs Nelson (Arena), Clint Credeur (Marlin Energy, LLC) and Art Mixon (PetroQuest Energy) for taking the time out of their busy schedules to present at the AADE Lafayette Chapter Annual Operators Forum. I found that their recaps of 2009 and, more importantly, their predictions for President s Message Jonathon Boudreaux 2010, provided a strong sense of relief and promise for the Gulf Coast and Louisiana oil and gas markets. The topic for discussion for this month will be on the evolution of different types of completions in the Haynesville Shale and similar unconventional gas plays. In the past few years, there has been a lot of media attention on the Haynesville Shale play. According to an article in the Wall Street Journal by Ben Casselman, After an era of declining production, the U.S. is now swimming in natural gas. Even conservative estimates suggest the Louisiana discovery known as the Haynesville Shale, for the dense rock formation that contains the gas could hold some 200 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That's the equivalent of 33 billion barrels of oil, or 18 years worth of current U.S. oil production. Some industry executives think the field could be several times that size. And, even though this is a massive natural gas discovery for the oil and gas industry, it is also churning out major capital and greatly influencing the economic life of Louisiana. Based on a report from the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources in April 2009: During the year 2008, the extraction activity generated approximately $2.4 billion in new business sales within the state of Louisiana. As a result of new business sales, nearly $3.9 billion in household earnings was created that year. Also, there was an increase of 32,742 new jobs within the state in Finally, they estimate the increase in state and local tax collections using a conservative estimate increased by at least $153.3 million in 2008 because of the extraction activities in the Haynesville Shale. 4 PAGE 4 AADE Lafayette Chapter Assists Families in Need at Christmas For the past several years, the Lafayette Chapter of AADE has adopted families at Christmas to help those less fortunate. This year, our chapter was able to assist five families in Vermilion Parish through the assistance of various Catholic churches and area schools. These families included those dealing with various illnesses, job loss; elderly needing assistance to cover medical bills and medication; and single moms with infants and young children trying to make ends meet. To help bring joy and ease some of their burden at Christmas, AADE donated food, clothing, toys, household items and provided assistance with utility bills ARRANGEMENTS CHAIRPERSON Michelle Frederick and medical needs. Words cannot begin to describe the overwhelming emotions experienced by each family, as well as the AADE families in attendance. A wish lists from each family member was granted, and all were left smiling and filled with the spirit of Christmas. AADE would like to thank Wal-Mart on Pinhook for its donations and assistance and those generous individuals who made donations to help with the medical needs for these families. Those who shared in the joy of giving by shopping and delivering these gifts to each family were Rick Voth, and her son, Darian; Melina Williams; and Michelle Frederick and her children, Micah and Myles. The families would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to AADE for these wonderful gifts and its generosity that allowed them to have a very memorable Christmas season. This increase will help to fill funding gaps and allow the Lafayette Chapter to maintain an aggressive commitment to scholarships and other worthwhile efforts. This gap is due to an estimated reduction in proceeds from fundraising efforts. The last time the AADE Lafayette Chapter raised its fees was in late 1990s.
