Mr. Ron Weegman will be presenting Introduction to the Intelliserv Broadband Network." Mr. Weegman is the regional account manager overseeing North America & Trinidad for National Oilwell Varcos IntelliServ Network which is comprised of wired drillstring components and a networked surface system. Please make reservations for this event by contacting peggymeynard@yahoo.com. Competition is not only the basis of protection to the consumer, but is the incentive to progress. (Herbert Hoover) The petroleum industry competes with alternative energy sources in a worldwide arena to provide the lowest cost and most readily available energy supply to sectors such as industrial, residential, transportation and electrical generation. Our competitors are primarily coal, nuclear, and renewable sources (wind, solar, hydroelectric, biomass and geothermal). The Iberia Parish borne high fiber cane Genesis Project is also bidding for its share in the energy supply chain and would categorically reside in the renewables supply chain. How does crude oil and natural gas rank versus our competitors today? The Energy Information Administration data below clearly demonstrates that crude oil and natural gas play a dominant role. 2 PAGE 2 President s Message continued from page 1 U.S. Primary Energy Consumption by Source and Sector (quadrillion (10 ^15) BTU s ) President s Message continued on page 3
3 PAGE 3 President s Message continued from page 2 Despite continuing incremental science and technological progress, renewable energy does not offer a panacea. These sources simply lack the scalable supply-side capacities necessary to meet energy demand increases, much less to significantly offset current fossil fuel consumption. Our industry s role while competing to reign as the provider of choice for readily available energy is to continue to safeguard life, health, and property while promoting the public welfare. We need to strengthen the capabilities of petroleum and natural gas supply by enhancing field recovery factors and operational efficiencies along with developing and promoting new and existing technologies. We must attract, train and retain the brightest engineers. Competition along with energy demand may drive the next frontier into water depths greater than 12,000 feet, wellbores in excess of 35,000 feet, Arctic environments, automation, or collaboration with National Oil Companies in large mature basins that contain the majority of proved reserves. National Oil Companies are projected to account for approximately 80% of the increase of both oil and gas production to 2030¹. We will be counted upon to be stewards of capital investments greater than 26.3 trillion dollars, of which 8.4 trillion dollars¹ will need to be delivered by 2030 solely in upstream oil and gas exploration. These monetary projections will be necessary to meet rising demand and to replace a timeworn infrastructure system. The late Dr. Richard Smalley, Nobel Peace Prize recipient and Rice University Professor, ranked energy as the number one challenge facing the world today. Energy is the single most important factor that impacts the prosperity of any society. A colossal responsibility rests on the shoulders of the petroleum industry as we will be requested to supply greater than 50% of the global energy supply for decades. ¹ International Energy Agency Chapter Notes: Thanks to Mr. Jeffery Svendson, Mr. Brad Duplantis and the Sporting Clays Committee for their efforts to organize and execute a first class shooting tournament. The annual event, with the aid of generous industry sponsors, volunteers and participants is essential to the funding of the scholarship programs at state universities. The results, Individual and Team, are posted on the AADE website at AADE Lafayette Chapter will be hosting the annual Golf Tournament at Le Triomphe Golf & Country Club on Monday June 22 nd. Mr. Dale Gaddis will serve as 2009 golf committee chairman. Ryan Hagle, Benny Manuel, Sharon Moore, Michelle Frederick, Rick Voth, and Robert robear Roger will hold seat on the committee as well. Please contact any committee member for event registration or visit for more information. Nomination ballots will be available at the April General Meeting for the 2009/2010 election year. Board positions available for nominees are President, 1 st Vice President, 2 nd Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and two each Steering Committee posts. Voting for nominated candidates will be held at the May 18th General Meeting. The AADE held its biannual National Technical Conference & Exhibition in New Orleans on March 31 st through April 2 nd. The AADE New Orleans Chapter was host to a well organized event, attended by greater than 430 participants, students and exhibitors. A balanced itinerary of industry macro and technical data was presented over the 2-1/2 day event. On a local level, ULL graduate student Mahdi Mahmoudi Eshkaftaki placed third in the student poster contest with his project titled A Review of Drillstring Design, Failure and Enhancing Features. Additional student presentations by local universities were LSU graduate students Maria French and Samrat Mahato s presentation - SP#1 Exploratory Gas Well Design. ULL presented two additional topics titled Heavy Foam for Deepwater Drilling and Experimental study of fluid loss additives for HTHP wells under dynamic and static conditions for different flow regimes by graduate students Chunlei Liu and Foad Ahmadi Fard respectively. Congratulations to Mahdi and all participants. Best Regards, Lindsay C. Longman, P.E.
4 PAGE Lafayette Chapter Scholarship Sporting Clays Tournament Jeffery Svendson The Lafayette Chapter AADE has been hosting sporting clays tournaments for sixteen years. The fund raising event has grown considerably over the years as well as the proceeds it generates for petroleum industry scholarships. This year s tournament was no exception. The event was held at Cajun Elite Shooting Complex in Jennings, LA on March 26 th, 27th & 28th. With threatening weather the day before the event, food and station sponsors were erecting tents and preparing bar-b-q pits in a drizzling rain. Unfortunately, preparation for the three day event that was to host close to six hundred shooters was somewhat overshadowed by the thought of a wash-out. However, luck prevailed and the wind and rains were limited to the night time hours of Thursday and Friday. With warm calm weather during the day on Thursday and Friday and strong north winds and much cooler temperatures on Saturday, the course was altered from passive on Thursday and Friday to very challenging on Saturday. Other than wind damage to a few tents and perhaps a few wounded egos from the shooting course, the event concluded without any complications. Safety was a priority and on the forefront of everyone s thoughts throughout the entire event. Twenty food sponsors provided an array of foodstuff from jambalaya, fried fish to pork chop sandwiches, crawfish, ribs and chicken to mention only a few of the many delectable dishes. If you were hungry, it was your own fault. In addition to the twenty food sponsors, there was an additional one hundred and twenty eight sponsors that provided tents, shooting station representation, door prizes, side shooting events, emergency medical services and many other bits and pieces that made up the tournament. In addition, there were scores of volunteers from service companies and committee members that donated their valuable time to help make the event a success. Without these countless sponsors and volunteers, the event would not have been possible. Although there are too many sponsors to list here, I would like to give special thanks to our Platinum sponsors; Baker Oil Tools, Gulf Fleet Holdings, Knight, MB Rentals, Rotorcraft Leasing and Talen s Marine and Fuel. Preliminary numbers indicate that our proceeds this year exceeded last year. As in the past, these proceeds will help provide oil industry scholarships and improvements to engineering departments at ULL, Nicholls and LSU. Everyone who participated in the event from sponsors to the shooters and volunteers played a large part in helping the AADE accomplish our mission in providing our state universities with financial aid to students pursuing a career in petroleum engineering. All those who participated in any way should be proud of their contributions and to be part of this excellent mission. We look forward to next year s event and invite those who could not be with us this year join us for next year s tournament. The Lafayette Chapter AADE Scholarship Sporting Clays Tournament is a premiere event in the oil & gas industry.
