Mike is a Senior Drilling Engineer and Jason is a Drilling Engineer. They will be discussing the challenges THUMS faces in drilling and completing wells in Long Beach. I know I am curious to hear more about the difficulties in drilling in such an old field as well as the challenges in operating from artificial islands. I d like to remind everyone that completed scholarship applications are due May 31 st. This year s AADE scholarship application was sent out on April 7 th to all chapter members. We hope to receive another great list of candidates for the available scholar- ships. This month s technical meeting will be the last AADE event before the summer break. The AADE Board decided to move the clay shoot that is typically held in May to mid-september this year. Hopefully the date change will help us make the September shoot just as popular as the January shoot. Finally, I d like to express my thanks to everyone that has made this year s AADE events a great success. Strong (continued on page 2)

We have had lots of new members joining and want to continually grow our membership. Please spread the word about our Technical Forum Meetings and all the great events throughout the year. 3 May 2011 Page 3 Lucky Member of the Month George Harper I grew up on a small farm in eastern Oklahoma. I attended Eastern Oklahoma State College where I received an Associate Degree in Engineering, and went on to Northeastern Oklahoma State University where I earned a BS in Mathematics. While attending college I spent my summers in Ventura California working for Lane Wells as an operator. After graduating from college I went on to teach Mathematics and Science for high school in my home state. I moved to Alaska in 1975 where I spent the next 20 years working as a Cased Hole Wireline Field Engineer in Prudhoe Bay for Speakers: Jason Mena Mike McCarter Topic: THUMS Bio: Jason Mena-Jason is a Drilling Engineer with Oxy Long Beach, Inc. He graduated from California State University, Fullerton with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. He worked for Schlumberger Oilfield Services for 6 years, primarily as a field engineer in Reservoir Evaluation Wireline. He spent the beginning of his career in Bakersfield and Villahermosa Mexico as a logging engineer. In 2006, he was transferred to the Middle East for 3 years, where he worked offshore projects in both Egypt and Western Atlas International. After retiring from that position I returned to Oklahoma where I owned and operated a cattle ranch for several years. After deciding to return to work, I came to Bakersfield in May 2008 at my current position as a sales representative for Baker Hughes Incorporated s Product line Baker Atlas. I am a proud father of three and I have one grandchild. My oldest daughter Trissona is a sales representative for a paving company and lives with her family in Claremore Oklahoma. Her daughter Kiara my only grandchild is a full time stu- primarily Saudi Arabia. From , he was transferred back to the states to work the deep water projects in the Gulf of Mexico. After a year in the Gulf, he was offered a position as a drilling engineer with Oxy Long Beach, Inc, and has been working with Oxy as a drilling engineer since July Mike McCarter Mike is a Senior Drilling Engineering Advisor with Oxy Long Beach, Inc. He graduated from the Colorado School of Mines in 1975, with a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering. Over the next 12 years, he worked as a production/ drilling engineer for Burmah Oil & Gas and it's successor companies, Aminoil USA, dent at Northeastern Oklahoma State University and works as a part time beautician. My twins Valeska and William are 19 years old (my granddaughter is 21 years old go figure that one). Valeska my youngest daughter will be graduating in June from Mount Vernon Washington as a firefighter and EMT specialist. My son William is currently a Lance Corporal in the USMC. Signal Petroleum, Aminoil of Louisiana, and Phillips Oil Company. In the process he worked in Huntington Beach, Ca., inland waters in New Orleans, La., and the offshore gulf from Lafayette, La. In 1987, he worked as a completion consultant for the Southern California Gas Company in the Honor Ranch and Aliso Canyon storage fields. From 1988 to 1991, he worked as a Senior Drilling Engineer for Bechtel Petroleum Operations at the Elk Hills Field in Bakersfield, Ca. He finally ended up back in the LA Basin in 1991, and has been working in the drilling department at THUMS Long Beach Co. for the last 20 years, with only one hiatus spending 6 months
