Volunteers log third straight year of record-low Angels Night fires

The Mayor congratulates Erinn Harris (District 3 Manager) for her leadership of the Angels Night effort Angels Night to focus on Halloween activities in 2018 Volunteers log third straight year of record-low Angels Night fires After successful Angels Night campaigns to reduce arson over the last several decades, City officials announced an end to the annual citywide patrol campaign and will focus on expanding Halloween activities for kids and their families in Mayor Duggan says the decision was based on recommendations from Police Chief James Craig and Fire Commissioner Eric Jones and conversations with community leaders. Mayor Duggan declares Angels Night 2017 a success at the wrap-up news conference Nov. 1 at the Detroit Public Safety Headquarters. The Mayor was joined by Fire Commissioner Eric Jones, Police Chief James Craig, Department of Neighborhoods District Managers and community and business representatives. From now on Halloween in Detroit isn t going to be about fear, it s going to be about fun, said Mayor Duggan at the wrap-up news conference Nov. 1. I d like to thank the thousands of Detroiters who volunteered over the years to keep our city safe and now it s time to watch our kids play, not patrol. Thank You!! Thank you to all the individuals, community groups, organizations and companies who contributed to the success of Angels Night. Angels Night Success is a Team Effort The entire Angels Night effort was coordinated by the District Managers in the Department of Neighborhoods, with Erinn Harris (District 3 Manager) serving as the chair of this year s campaign. General Manager Victoria Kovari and District 7 Manager Ray Solomon played an important role in the effort as well.

2 Kids Enjoyed Halloween Fun Across the City Thanks to City employees and lots of volunteers, Detroit families had 25 locations this year to enjoy family-friendly, fun activities and lots of candy. New this year was the Haunted Park at Varier Park on Detroit s northwest side organized by the General Services Department with assistance from the Parks & Recreation Department. From spooky tales, carnival games, music and Halloween photos, area residents were lined up for some Halloween fun. The DDOT haunted bus was a hit again this year, as hundreds of kids and adults hopped on-board for a scare.

3 All of the City s recreation centers were transformed with Halloween decorations throughout the buildings. Activities ranged from haunted hallways and mazes, trunk-or-treating, carnival games, inflatables, a spooky train ride, and an exotic zoo. The Parks and Recreation Department racked up an impressive number of participants as 10,389 individuals visited its centers on Halloween, with another 290 individuals serving as volunteers. WHO YA GONNA CALL? The Ghostbusters again answered the call.

5 The members of the Detroit Police and Fire departments proved they know how to have fun too. All 11 police precincts and three fire stations provided trunk-or-treating as kids loaded their bags with candy donated by Detroit residents, area businesses and City employees. In addition to the trunk-or-treating, DPD also had a Halloween float at the 5th Precinct, Halloween party at the 9th Precinct, haunted house at the 11th Precinct, and Halloween party and hayride at the 12th Precinct.

6 Among City Departments Detroit Police Department 10th Precinct, Detroit Department of Transportation and Department of Innovation and Technology A number of City departments joined the fun by decorating their cars and passing out candy at the police precincts and designated fire stations. The Department of Neighborhoods District Managers recognized employees efforts by selecting two winners based on the decorations and participation. And the WINNERS are...
