4 Mayor s Welcome Letter

5 Chairperson s Welcome Letter Honored Guests, On behalf of the Human Rights Commission and The News-Dispatch, I welcome you to our annual dinner honoring the Michigan City Humanitarian of the Year. We honor an individual who has demonstrated kindness and concern for others within our community, while promoting respect for human dignity through his actions over many years Our Humanitarian of the Year for 2008 is Mr. Stan Holdcraft. We present this award to him to thank him for his many volunteer hours as director for the Young Peoples Theatre, and for his dedication to the young people of Michigan City. Also we celebrate the promise of the future by awarding the Hawkins-Williams Educational Scholarship to Patrick Dabkowski. Patrick graduated from Marquette High School in June. He will be attending Indiana University and has been directly admitted to the Indiana University Kelley School of Business. With this admission, he joins a select group of the most promising freshmen within the I.U. school of business. So this evening we celebrate our past, we are inspired by our future and we dedicate ourselves to meet the challenges of today. Thank you for sharing this evening and our mission with us. Sincerely, `ary Xllen duinn Chair Michigan City Human Rights Commission

6 2009 Scholarship Winner - Charles Westcott When reading the list of past HOYA recipients, the name Charles Westcott struck the biggest interest for me to learn more abut his involvement with making the Michigan City community a better place for all. This is not because he was the first recipient on the list, but rather because I have heard others talk about him before with nothing but total respect for the man for what he has done as a great role model for the community. Charles Westcott is most popularly known as the director of the Elite Youth Center. He started working at the Elite Youth Center in 1947 where he began his position of director and more importantly a role model for the community. As the director of the youth center he took special interest in the children not only to become good athletes and students, but also to become well-rounded people. The kids that came to the youth center were known as Charlie s Kids because of this special bond that he had with them. Charles Westcott has directly impacted my life and other peoples lives I know as well. As a kid, my father played for Coach Westcott on the 7 th and 8 th grade basketball team at Queen of All Saints and he told me, He was great coach who demanded respect from everyone. Charles Westcott has also affected my life when I received the 2005 Charles R. Westcott Award at Queen of All Saints my 8 th grade year, which was presented in recognition of outstanding leadership and athletic effort. Overall, Charles Westcott has influenced our community of the better. He was a role model for the youth to become better athletes, students, and most importantly better people. His efforts helped make Michigan City what it is today.
