2 F a m i ly Hist o ry Classes Speaker bios Explore Your Family Tree This Spring At The Family History Research Classes Friday, June 1st am to 5 pm A native of Raleigh, North Carolina Debbi Blake received an undergraduate degree in English and a graduate degree in Child Development and Family Relations from UNC-Greensboro. She worked for two years for the North Carolina Extension Service as 4-H agent for Granville County. She later earned a graduate-level teaching certificate and taught for 12 years in a Greensboro private school. Returning to Raleigh she received a Masters degree in Archival Management from NC State University in 1993, while working at the NC State Archives. In 2000 she became Public Services Branch supervisor at the Archives. Ms. Blake has done genealogical research for over 20 years. Jefferson Currie II has worked with people and communities throughout North Carolina for almost 20 years. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Jefferson has served as an Indian Village Specialist with the North Carolina Indian Culture Center, oral historian interviewing textile mill workers for the Earl Scruggs Center in Cleveland County, N.C., a disk jockey for the American Indian music program Native Voices at WFSS on the Campus of Fayetteville State University, and a contract folklorist documenting the life and livelihood of people across North Carolina. For more than a decade he was employed as an assistant curator at the North Carolina Museum of History in Raleigh, North Carolina where he curated the exhibits North Carolina Legends, Community and Culture: North Carolina Indians Past and Present, Powwow: Heartbeat of a People and History of Harvest. During his tenure at the Museum of History, Jefferson frequently contributed to museum projects as an editor, writer, festival organizer, presenter and workshop leader. Jefferson attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Master of Arts program in Folklore where he researched race and identity issues, powwows, southern fishing traditions, southern foodways and occupational Folklife. Currently, he is completing his thesis about the interconnectedness of Indian identity and the sheetrocking (drywall) occupation with the Lumbee Indian community in North Carolina while working as the documentation, collections and surface treatment manager for the Vollis Simpson Whirligig Project (VSWP) in Wilson, North Carolina. As a part of the VSWP, Jefferson supervises the conservation crew, works with the artist Vollis Simpson to detail the history and construction of the whirligigs, documents the repair and conservation of each piece of artwork, and makes presentations about the project to local organizations and academic conferences. Jefferson Currie is an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. North Carolina native Chris Meekins began his interest in genealogy when he was about ten years old and working with his grandfather who was the caretaker of the Elizabeth City city cemeteries. Chris came to history much later but with the same interest in local events. Working at the Archives has allowed him to stay active in both of these interests. He has been with the Archives since Since 2001 Kay Tillotson, has worked as the Genealogy Research Librarian at the State Library of North Carolina s Government and Heritage Library which is part of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. She is a native of North Carolina and has traced her ancestors back to the late 1700s. Prior to working for the State Library of North Carolina, Tillotson was a U.S. Department of Defense classroom teacher and has taught classes for the North Carolina Community College System. Gen. Classes, and Kids Activities are Free and Open to the Public. The purpose of the Family History Fair is to bring together the many history libraries, historical and genealogical societies, organizations, groups, and individuals who have an interest in family, local, or area history as there is a rich cultural heritage among the people of Eastern North Carolina from the early times to the present. Those outside the Eastern North Carolina area who have a connection to the area are also welcome to participate. Over 500 adults and 500 kids attended the event last year. Exhibitor tables are $30 each by May 26th, $40 after, for entire event and are available on a first-come, first-served approval basis. Each exhibitor will have a (8 x 24 ) skirted table and two chairs. Public Wi-Fi Internet is free throughout the facility. If you need an electrical connection, the convention center charges a flat pre-paid fee of $ Exhibitor Setup Time is 7am to 9am on Friday, June 1st or Saturday, June 2nd. Exhibitor tables will be placed in Heritage Hall. The back of the table will be next to the wall with one chair on either end. If you plan to have an exhibitor display board, we ask that it be no larger than the width of the table. The convention center requests that nothing be attached to the walls. For facility info: You are welcome to sell items that relate to your organization with all the proceeds directly benefiting your group. We ask that you donate one item of your choice such as a a book, membership, etc., to be given away as a Door Prize at the Family History Fair.
