1 Introduction This guide is to be used as an aid to site recording where the installation of Cables /Jointing or Ducting is carried out. This is in addition to any process documentation and further reference must be made to UKPN standard EOS Site Recording of Cables, Plant and Equipment. The task of Site recording should be undertaken by a suitably qualified person with experience in Drawing Office/Surveying techniques who will liaise with UKPN in providing the records required. All records must be provided to the satisfaction of UKPN. As always if in doubt Please ask These details must be supplied whenever Cables, Jointing or Ducting is used: 2 Cable Routes/Joints Dimensions are required from details and points shown on Ordnance Survey (O.S.) mapping to all the following point along a cable route: All changes in direction or depth along the cable route and every so often on a straight trench run. (The trench itself should not be used to measure along, unless it forms part of a convenient sightline that you are using). Long lengths of running dimensions must be avoided. Dimensions must be tied into O.S. map feature points. Any changes found during the excavation of the cable trench that do not appear on any record must be recorded / dimensioned and shown on the plan (such as other utilities plant). Joint positions. All joint positions must be dimensioned to the centre of the joint and the details of the joint supplied to UKPN, these must include (a) All details of all cables in the joint. (b) The type of joint i.e. Straight joint/branch Joint/Capped end or Pot End. (c) The jointing date. (d) The jointers name and employer. Start and stop positions of ducting with cross section details must be recorded. 3 Cable Details The cable type and voltage must be shown. Voltage rating i.e. 132KV, 33KV, 11KV, LV, Pilot. Size and description of cables. i.e. 300mm Al. or Cu and Triplex or XLPE etc. Whether the cable is a 3 core cable or 3 single cores or Multi cores for a Pilot. A typical 33kV cable description might be: 3x300mmAl.XLPE = 300mm Aluminium 3 single cores XLPE sheath. 3c 300mmAl.XLPE = 300mm 3 core cable. (As above but 3 cores in a single cable). A typical LV cable description will be 95Ew A typical Pilot cable description might be described in pairs or cores: 19pr (19 pairs) or 37 cores. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 2 of 12

A typical Fibre Optic cable description might be: 24 or 48 Fibres Displaying the Cable and Jointing details are very important as part of the site record, this can be shown as either: Details added to the plan; As a table in a spreadsheet and supplied with the route plan (as shown below) Example of 33kV Cable Route details in a table format. Example of 33kV Cable Jointing details in a table format. Example of Fibre Optic Cable Route details in a table format. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 3 of 12

4 Cable Warning Markers The presence of Tape, Steel Plates, Fibre Boards or any other protection should be described and shown in cross section details. The location of any ground level route markers or tombstones such as concrete marker posts should be identified on the plans and positioned using measurements. 5 Cable Drum Numbers Drum number for each cable or core used in any circuit used and between joints/terms on a project must be identified and supplied. (See details in a table format shown in 2) 6 Ducts - Including those used in a Directional Drill Size of all ducts (Internal Diameter) i.e. 160mm OD or ID (Please state) Start and End positions of all ducting Type of duct i.e. PVC, Steel or other. Position of duct in relation to other trench details. Depth of duct below ground level. Type of duct surround - if it has been encased in concrete or any other type of protection material. State if the duct has been filled with Bentonite or any other substance. Any changes in the duct route that deviate from a straight line between the start and exit positions. Sub ducts within a single duct may be used for Fibre Optic Cables These must be identified and shown on the plan cross section (See example below). Example of Sub Ducts used for Fibre Optic cables. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 4 of 12

7 Directional Drills Start and Exit positions (Launch & Exit Bays) of the ducts for each Directional Drill. Points at which the D.D ducts meet other open cut route ducting. Dimensions to points along the route that deviate from a straight line between the Start and Exit points of the D.D. (Drill Route Plan View) An AS BUILT longitudinal profile for the whole route of the D.D. showing depths at regular intervals below surface level. A cross section showing all the detail across the D.D. at the start and exit positions (Number and position of ducts, Number and position of cables), and an arrow on the plan to show direction of view. Type of ducting used and all the detail listed in section 5. (Ducts) UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 5 of 12

8 Cut, Capped, Abandoned or Cables Removed completely from Site Any cable that has a cut or capped end must have the position recorded with dimensions and be noted on a copy of the Mains Record. Abandoned cables must be identified and recorded on a copy of the Mains Record. Cables that have been cut and completely removed from site must have the cut ends recorded with dimensions and the removed section of cable highlighted on a copy of the Mains Record and noted as such. Abandoned cables used for earth electrode must be recorded to ensure they are not cut and removed in future. 9 Job Project Number and RIG Driver Codes The UKPN Job Number MUST always be attached to the site sketch along with the correct RIG CODE (Regulatory Instruction & Guidance Codes) RIG CODES are used by OFGEM for Asset reporting and these codes must be attached to any work submitted to UKPN GIS Drawing Office. This includes dismantled overhead lines and underground cables removed from site which will need to be removed from NetMAP. (RIG Codes are reason codes why the work has been done). 10 Taking Dimensions Reference must be made to EOS Site Recording of Cables, Plant and Equipment. Dimensions should be taken from Ordnance Survey data points as shown in UKPN NetMAP database, to the centre of the trench or cable route change in direction from details that are shown on our 1/500 scale maps, blank O.S mapping or a Developers/Architects plan. Dimensions should be shown in red. Measurements along sightlines from O.S. data features should be employed when fixing points along the route of the cable trench. The use of sightlines, 90 degree angle offsets from a baseline and triangulation should be used to fix the position of points along the trench run. It is vital to place dimensions on the plan exactly where they have been taken on site. For instance, if you have taken dimensions along and around a road kerb edge on site, replicate that detail on the plan, then use offsets at 90 degrees from that point to fix the cable route etc. (See example below) Use a 1 to 500 scale plan to record the dimensions to the cable route from O.S Data. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 7 of 12

Example of a contractor s cable route site record. 11 Cross Sections Cross sections should be used where the formation of ducting, depths below ground level and any additional trench features need to be shown. A line across the trench with an arrowhead should be placed on the main record to indicate in which direction the section details have been viewed. Each cross section should be numbered on the main plan. This number should then match the section details to be drawn. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 8 of 12

Example of a Cross Section: For EHV routes, cross sections should be marked at regular intervals with section marker identifiers. Where many of these sections are identical the cross section should list all section identifiers to which it refers. 12 GPS. (Global Positioning Satellite Data) The standard for recording cable routes is by taking measurements on site and adding this detail to a plan. However, UKPN GIS Drawing Office in the eastern region, (UKPN) will accept GPS data as a means of positioning cable routes. In remote areas where O.S details are sparse, GPS data is acceptable as the standard for supplying this detail. GPS Data coordinates must be supplied on an excel spreadsheet with the eastings and northings data points identified in separate cells within the spreadsheet. Nine (9) digit references are required, point numbers and references must be shown beside the set of data point they relate to. The route must also be plotted onto a plan of the area with all the points and references shown. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 9 of 12

Example of GPS Data points in an Excel Spreadsheet. Please Note - Any GPS detail supplied may not match our older map base records system and if used, tie in points should be taken to verify the current O.S. data to GPS data relationship. 13 Ordnance Survey Details Any dimensions that are taken from items NOT shown on Ordnance Survey mapping cannot be used by UKPN GIS Drawing Office. The only time when non O.S. items can be used is when dimensions are required to remote areas where GPS Data would be more suitable or For example, If a new house has been used to take dimensions from that is not shown on OS Mapping, you will need a developer s plan or you will need to take dimensions on site to position the building. Any correction to O.S. details found on site, must be measured and positioned correctly, if it affects the details you are using on site during the site recording process. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 10 of 12

Example of Ordnance Survey background map found in NetMAP. 14 UK Power Networks Overhead Lines, Poles and Towers 14.1 Overhead Towers and Poles Towers are structures shown on O.S. and may be used for taking dimensions from. The positions of poles on any UKPN plan are not guaranteed, and any project involving new or existing poles will need their position dimensioned from O.S. mapping details Overhead Lines Where work has taken place on site that changes the overhead network. A drawing with details must be supplied to show: Changes in conductor size or type. Changes in pole numbering. Installed new poles/towers and conductors. Dismantled existing poles/towers and conductors. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 11 of 12

A plan should be submitted to GIS Drawing Office showing these changes The plan levels in NetMAP that shows overhead lines is: 1/10000 for HV/EHV overhead routes and 1/2500 which shows predominately LV overhead routes but on older maps may also show other overhead line voltages. Example of 1/10000 scale HV/EHV overhead line record in NetMAP. 15 UK Power Networks Substations 15.1 Substations Where substations are involved in a project, the position/size and shape should be dimensioned if there is evidence of a change to what is shown on UKPN NetMAP System. Details must also be supplied where work within the substation has taken place. UK Power Networks 2017 All rights reserved 12 of 12
