1 Project 2 : Forecast/Prediction Typography is the practice of combining letterforms into words and sentences. Like speech and writing, it is a language and a code. Unlike speech and writing, it passes most people s notice without critical attention. Yet when used well, typography can be as powerful as the ideas to which it gives form. A prediction or forecast is a statement about things that will happen in the future, often but not always based on experience or knowledge. While there is much overlap between prediction and forecast, a prediction may be a statement that some outcome is expected, while a forecast is more specific, and may cover a range of possible outcomes. Predictions and estimates are applied in science, weather, climate, finance, sport, politics, consumer behavior, style and fashion trends, social networking, sustainability, and many more. Guaranteed information about the future, or a future outcome, is in many cases impossible, but predictions and forecasts allow plans to be made about possible developments. Design Objectives To research and explore and become more aware of how design can function in various cultural contexts +++ To further enhance compositional skills and methods of visual translation. +++ To develop an awareness of the subtleties and detail of the letterforms, typographic history, classification and become critical of form and typographic personality. +++ Introduction to semantics (meaning) and syntax (arrangement) and explore design methods and criteria through which the meaning of the typographic message and from may be altered. Categories of Prediction and Forecast Prediction machines in sport Tide prediction Weather forecast Surf/wind/marine forecast Future timeline in technology Financial forecasts Climate predictions Social media predictions Gambling probabilities Trend predictions Consumer forecasts Online Font Foundries Required: Fontshop Process Commercial Hoefler & Co. Emigre Also review: House Industries Type Together T26 Font House Veer Project Select a specific area of prediction or forecast, for example, weather or finance, etc. Research the history, method, and goals of the prediction. Choose 3 words (nouns+adjectives) that best describe or characterize the specific subject that is being forecast. The 3 words do not have to make a statement or phrase but should be meaningful when combined. Additionally, gather iconic, representational, or abstract imagery (numbers, data visualizations, graphs) that might support the subject. You will develop a series of compositions that visually express the specific subject that is being forecast. 1. Typographic using your 3 words express the interaction through experimental typography. 2. Abstract/Visual data abstractions, iconography, marks, numbers, lines or media 3. Combine the words and visual to express the subject. Process: Part 1 : Typographic Using the assigned typeface (Univers) begin by practicing accurate spacing and tracing of the three words on a 5 x 8 horizontal format (one word per format). You may choose any of the weights. Next, continue to evaluate the meaning of the words by looking at other typefaces that best represent the word and are visually reflective of its meaning. 1. Review the online font sites to the left. Many sites let you test out a few words before buying. Select 3 typefaces that best represent the idea/meaning of your words. 2. Print out the typefaces to use for your study. Write down the name of the typeface, the designer, and the digital foundry site. Be able to briefly describe why the typeface is appropriate. 3. Enlarge and trace the words using the 3 type choices. Center each word on its own 5 x 8 format. 4. Explore typographic form and compose or crop to make a interesting expressive typographic composition with each word on its own a 5 x 8 format. Process: Part 2 : Abstract/Visual Translations Collect, explore and use charts and graphs as an inspirational source for the media study. For the media study consider 2D collage, cut paper and drawing techniques along with 3D using various materials and media. Redraw, abstract, crop or reinterpret the form notations using stylizations techniques, translations, line mapping, marks, and color media. (See media list on page to follow). Select 6 final abstract 5 x 5 compositions. Consider variety and compositional uniqueness in your final selection. Process: Part 3 : Type and Media Poster composition On a 18 x 30" format, visually explore the meaning of the 3 typographic words, with color media and graphics to make an expressive composition that communicates the features of the prediction or forecast. You may include other text, quotes or phrases if needed. Study how placement, composition, manipulation and overall compositional decisions can effect the meaning of the selected words and the interpretation of the statement. Consider 2D collage, cut paper and drawing techniques and 3D using various materials and media. Data produced for predictions and forecasts are often evaluated and visualized using charts and graphs. Final Formats 1. Part 1 and 2: 6 color media/translations and 3 color or B+W type compositions (see below) 2. Part 3: Type and media poster composition. Color words combined with media and translations. 3. Sketchbook with part 1, 2 and 3 reduce and bound. 19" 5 x 8" 5 x 5" 5 x 5" 5 x 8" 5 x 5" 5 x 8" 5 x 5" 1. Part 1 and 2 30" 2. Part 3: 1 Type and Media Color Poster composition (flush mounted on foam or gatorboard) 1 Sketch book Sketches bound Present no fewer than 10 sketches per section (total 30 sketches). Organize and mount on black paper with cover and bind. TYPOGRAPHY EXPERIMENTS Univers Begin using the Univers type family supplied and examine the words with proper letterspacing. Ink all letterforms in B+W. Use either pen and ink or marker for sketches. 3 Selected Typefaces The arrangement and selection of type reinforces the meaning of words. Consider: Face, case, size, slant, weight, width, outline, texture, tonality Balance, direction, ground, grouping, proximity, repetition, rhythm, rotation The shape of the words and the organization of the type becomes an important aspect of the composition and the sense of legibility. Experiment with the visible language. Expressive, dynamic. Words may be placed horizontally, vertically (no stacking), or diagonally within the 5 x 8" and later the 11 x 17" composition. Explore each of the criteria above to reveal how small or subtle changes to typographic forms can reinforce meaning. VISUAL /MEDIA EXPERIMENTS From your research choose representational forms, numbers, graphics or info graphics or data files. Translate these in B+W and then color/media using a stylistic method that relates to your subject matter. Present in a 5 x 5 format. Drawing techniques (pencil, pen and ink, charcoal) Present an assortment of lines or marks that define the material or the tactile experience translate on various papers or surfaces Explore straight horizontal or vertical lines of varying thicknesses, gestural lines/techniques, and form under erasure. Image/Texture Transfer and Printing techniques Show assortment of transfer techniques from one paper source to another Experimenting with xerox transfer, marker bleeding, paint transfer, texture transfer Color or BW Xerography Techniques Using the copier (b&w or color) to experiment with textures over textures using transparencies and various paper stocks showing possibilities of technical manipulation and visual texture Handmade 2-D Textures Show assortment of textures created by hand based on or using the selected material. 6 Typography X HEIGHT Typography UPPERCASE STROKE COUNTER SERIF ASCENDER BASELINE DESCENDER LOOP LOWERCASE LETTERS Baseline + Letterspacing TYP OGRAPHY sits on baseline Poor alignment of rounded letters and poor letterspacing TYPOGRAPHY overhangs baseline Alignment and letterspacing corrected 30 units of interletterspacing Typography is the art, or skill, of designing communication by means of the printed word. -10 units of interletterspacing Typography is the art, or skill, of designing communication by means of the printed word. Letterspacing/Tracking is the space added between letters which affects the overall value of the text. More space can slow down the readability of the text, especially in larger bodies of text. Kerning is the selective optical letterspacing between 2 letters where there are awkward visual spacing problems. These problems arise with letters such as TA, AW, VO and in letters W,Y,V, T, and L etc. Overall visual balance/flowis achieved through optical letterspacing.

7 Alignment T Y P O G R A P H Y Poor Vertical Alignment TYPOGRAPHY Good Vertical Alignment Flush left, Flush Right, Justified and Centered type alignments Flush left/rag right The text aligns evenly against the left margin. Care should be taken to create an even rag on the right hand side to maintain good reading and visual flow. Flush Right/Rag left The text aligns evenly against the right margin. Care should be taken to create an even rag on the left hand side to maintain good reading and visual flow. Justified The text aligns evenly against the left and right margin and have all the same line length. Centered The text aligns symmetrically within the right and left margin Vertical Alignment Letter are generally designed to sit beside one another on a baseline and not on top of one another. Uppercase can work better if stacked (but the letter I will always cause visual problems). Generally, avoid stacking type (especially lowercase) vertically, instead rotate the orientation of the word/text. Typographic Syntax and Form In grammar, syntax is the methods in which words are combined to create phrases and sentences. Typographic syntax is the method in which letters, words, lines and columns are arranged to create a unified, exciting and meaningful visual arrangement. Through the use of space (white/negative) and contrast (size/scale), letters, words, and text can be dynamically arranged to create visual meanings and typographic messages. form form Space In typographic design the letterform (text) and the space that it occupies are mutually important. Placement and orientation of the letterforms within this space can effect overall visual expression and meaning. Letterforms or text centered or symmetrical within the space is generally considered neutral or static, while placement on a diagonal or asymmetrically can give a sense of movement or expression. diet type the role of typographic experimentation is to extend the boundaries of language by freely probing visual and verbal syntax and the relationships between word and image. Contrast Typographic design depends on contrast to create meaning and expression. Contrast is created in form (letterform variation), weight, size, texture and direction. Contrast in text or typography attracts and encourages reading, and creates visual hierarchy to help clarify meaning and communication. Visual hierarchy is the arrangement of elements from most to least important in relation to the message. ity unity leav e The Typographic Message Signs The typographic message is read and interpreted verbally, but can also be interpreted audibly and visually. Language is a system of interactive signs (alphabetic symbols) that when grouped, communicate ideas. Typographic signs/symbols and the space on which they exist can be altered or manipulated to enhance the meaning (semantics) or to achieve more expressive communication.
