3 Assignments: Criteria for the Principle of Design assignments you will do (Balance, Pattern, Emphasis, Unity and Variety, and Rhythm and Movement): - Paper must be at least 12X12 - You must fill the whole page - When you are done you must take a picture and put it on your portfolio. Title the slide the name of the Principle. - Type the answers to the STUDY/ACT questions on your portfolio for each assignment.

4 Balance Definition: A feeling of equality of weight, attention, or attraction of the various elements within an artwork/composition. Types of Balance: Symmetrical: Both sides are similar in visual weight and almost mirrored Asymmetrical: Both sides are similar in visual weight but not mirrored Radial: Everything arranged around a center

8 Balance To Do: Create a unique artwork using symmetrical, asymmetrical or radial balance. Step 1 - Plan: Create 3-5 sketches of different ideas for your artwork. Choose your favorite. 10 Pattern Definition: Patterns are created by repeating shapes, colors, lines or other Elements. Types of Patterns: Regular: generally regular patterns are man-made Irregular: generally irregular patterns are found in nature.

14 Pattern To Do: Create a unique artwork using a minimum of 7 unique patterns. Plan: Sketch out 8-10 different patterns (complete in sketchbook) Do: Create a unique artwork that uses a minimum of 7 patterns from your sketches. Patterns should create a cohesive artwork, where they work together, not be placed randomly. Study: What Elements of Design did you use in your artwork? 16 Emphasis Definition: The focal point of an artwork, or the areas that grabs your attention first. We can show emphasis by using color (including color schemes), value, line, and placement of objects.

23 Unity Definition: How the Elements work together to make an artwork complete. -Unity creates a sense of harmony and wholeness in an artwork by using similar Elements. -Every area of the artwork should relate to one another.
