1 Instructor Clarissa Gregory Drawing Outside the Box JHU Homewood Campus Summer 2015 Term I: Monday May 27 th Thursday June 26 th Days & Time: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays 10am 12:30pm Course #: AS Location: Homewood Campus, Mattin Center 201 Drawing is touching at a distance Sigmund Abeles Detail from Michelangelo s The Creation of Adam, Sistine Chapel, Course Description We will explore essential principles, tools, terminology & media, while pushing the boundaries of traditional drawing by adopting alternatives such as drawing with wire, inking with grass, and animating gesture in Photoshop. Not only will we draw from observation, which builds the perceptual platform and skills for spatial understanding and rendering, but we will draw from intuition, movement, and outdoor stimuli. Subject matter may include: still life, interiors, landscape, architecture, the human figure and personal narrative. Recommended Reading Drawing from Observation: an Introduction to Perceptual Drawing 2 nd Ed. by Brian Curtis Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain by Betty Edwards 4 th Ed PBS Art:21 Videos Attendance You must be on time & and stay for the duration for all classes. Two missed classes will lower your grade by one letter. Three late classes count as a missed class. Three missed classes result in an F. Projects Your assignments for critique must be presented on time. You will lose a letter grade for each week an assignment is overdue. Students can expect to spend an average of 4 hours outside of class: 1hour on sketchbooks and 3 hours on projects.
2 FINAL GRADE will be based on Studio Projects: 500 (100pts/Project) Sketchbook: 150 (15pts/Entry) Effort, Growth & Participation (incl. in-class work): 150 TOTAL POINTS POSSIBLE: 800 Grading Standards A = 90 and above D = B = F =59 and below C = REQUIRED SUPPLIES $6-9 x 12 Sketchbook $7 - One 8GB Flashdrive $8 18 x 24 Strathmore Charcoal Pad ( grit for charcoal, ink/wash) ***Note on Paper: Rives BFK and Arches are HIGH QUALITY PAPER. Try this type for longer, extensive drawings, if you re interested*** $2 - Two Graphite Pencils 2B - 8B (or one charcoal pencil for soft ) $5 - Vine Charcoal (1pkg. soft & 1pkg. hard ) $2 - Pencil Sharpener $ Kneadable Eraser AND White (rectangular) Eraser $10 - INK Supplies: Black India Ink, Bamboo Brush, Pen & Nib Portfolio this can come in many forms and prices.see options below: 1) MAKE YOUR OWN: Using large cardboard sheet, taped or folded in ½. Cut out handle & use as an envelope for artwork. (Utrecht gives these out with paper-purchases, or you could probably buy one from them.) 2) PURCHASE: commercially produced, heavy brown paper portfolios with plastic handles vs. heavy-duty $$$, waterproof, nylon zip case portfolio * Drawing Boards Supplied by JHU * Toolbox recommended for carrying all your supplies * Clamp Light ($3 -$5 at Hardware store) recommended for direct light source Open Studio You may use the studio whenever it is free! 3 It is only by drawing often, drawing everything, drawing incessantly, that one fine day you discover to your surprise that you have rendered something in its true character.
