1 SUNNYSIDE SCOOP DECEMBER, 2016 Principal Points December 2016 Reflection and Thanksgiving Sunnyside families, As we near the end of the calendar year and prepare to say goodbye to 2016, it s hard to believe how quickly the first part of the school year has gone. With the first quarter in the books and our staff and students already well into the second quarter I was reflecting upon all we have to be thankful of as a Sunnyside community and I wanted to share a few of them with you. I am thankful for our students who come to school each and everyday ready to learn. Daily they remind us of why we are here and the important work that must be done on their behalf. I am thankful for the amazing support of our parents who build partnerships with us. I am thankful for the Sunnyside teachers, paraprofessionals, secretaries, and all of our amazing support staff who deeply care about student achievement and helping them grow into well rounded individuals. I am also thankful for the many volunteers who contribute so much to our school, many of whom don t have kids here, but continue to come back to support our students as Sunnyside means such a great deal to them. Thank you families for placing your trust in us as we partner with you to support the most valuable possession we could share, the Sunnyside students. Wishing all of you a wonderful holiday season. Dr. Nathan Flansburg Principal

6 Chess Club: Chess Club would like to Congratulate Dermise and Ruccus Shauer and Keenan Zierdt for participating in SCA's Fall Grade Level Chess Tournament on Nov. 5th at Highview Middle School in New Brighton. Chess Club also Congratulates Nathan Pichner for his 2nd Place finish of the 3rd-5th Grade Chess players in CSGA Fall Open K-12 Chess Tournament on Nov. 11th. Great Job players for experiencing tournament play and your continued interest in the game of Chess! Try practicing this move over the winter break: Scholar's Mate: In chess, Scholar's Mate is the checkmate achieved by the following moves, or similar: 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nc6 3. Bc4 Nf6?? 4. Qxf7# The moves might be played in a different order or in slight variation, but the basic idea is the same: the queen and bishop combine in a simple mating attack on f7 (or f2 if Black is performing the mate). Scholar's Mate is sometimes referred to as the "Four-Move Checkmate", although there are other ways to checkmate in four moves. Now try this to defend yourself against Scholar's Mate: After 1. e4 e5 2. Qh5 Nc6 3. Bc4, if Black continues 3... Nf6?? then White can end the game immediately with 4. Qxf7#. However, Black can easily avoid the mate: either 3...Qe7 or 3...g6 defend against the threat. If White renews the Qxf7 threat after 3... g6 4. Qf3, Black can easily defend by 4... Nf6, and develop the f8-bishop later via fianchetto (...Bg7). White might also try this sequence of moves, starting from the Bishop's Opening: 1. e4 e5 2. Bc4 Bc5 3. Qh5 (threatening Scholar's Mate on f7) and now 3... Qe7! ( 3...g6? instead would be a big mistake, allowing 4.Qxe5+ and 5.Qxh8) and Black is not only safe, but will attack the white queen later with...nf6. Alternatively, Black could have stopped White's plans early on by playing 2...Nf6 instead of 2...Bc5.

12 Report to PARENTS Prep for Emergencies School safety has recently been at the forefront of everyone s minds. Schools have emergency plans to keep students safe from threats of violence or natural disasters and your family should, too. Preparation is key to ensure that you and your family members can react quickly and calmly if a serious threat arises. Take these steps to ensure your family is prepared for emergencies. Talk it out. Discuss, in an age-appropriate way, the emergencies your family might encounter, including the natural disasters your area may be susceptible to. You may be reluctant to talk about emergencies with your children because you don t want to alarm them. But discussing situations ahead of time will not only help your children know what to do, it will also help them cope with the stress if something does happen. Know your school s plan. Every school should have an emergency plan in place. Make sure you and your child know what students should do and how parents will be notified of a crisis. Memorize the essentials. Make sure your children know their full name, address, phone number, and parents full names. Kindergarteners should have this memorized before their first day of school. Know the numbers. Teach your children how to dial 911, but stress that they should only do so in case of an emergency. Post a list in your kitchen of home, cell, and work numbers for parents, caregivers, and trusted neighbors. Give copies to teachers and the school office, childcare providers, and other emergency contacts. Make a plan. Create your family s escape plan to be used in case of a fire or other home emergency. Establish a meeting place outside your home, and make sure to devise a secondary plan in case the first exit is blocked or unsafe. In your plan, address the needs of pets and any family members who need extra assistance. Practice the plan. Conduct fire drills and emergency evacuation drills. Teach older children how to use a fire extinguisher, or sign them up for a first-aid class. Quiz your family members every six months to make sure they remember what to do. Build a disaster kit. Make sure you have a stocked first-aid kit at home, and gather the supplies for an emergency kit, including water, nonperishable food, a flashlight, medicines, and batteries. Check your equipment. Make sure your home s smoke detectors are always in working order and that your fire extinguishers have not passed their expiration date and are easily accessible. Buy drop-down window ladders if your apartment or bedrooms are not on the first floor. Web Resources Use Ready.gov s disaster supply list to stock your kit. Learn facts about specifi c types of emergencies on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention s emergency page. The American Red Cross has checklists for every type of disaster (in a variety of languages). Report to Parents, written to serve elementary and middle-level principals, may be reproduced by National Association of Elementary School Principals members without permission. It can be posted to school websites, blogs, or sent via . Back issues are available to members at naesp.org. RP 31:2
