1 Newsletter September 2015 Volume 29 Number 9 Edited by Susan Lester September 3, Business Meeting & Program 1st Congregational Church of Reno, 627 Sunnyside Dr, Reno Business meeting at 11, followed by lunch & show & tell, Program starts at 1pm. September meeting program information: Dyeing Reed Join two members to learn their methods of dyeing reed. Karen Rosselli will be describing dyeing reed using Rit Dye. In her presentation Karen will explain using Rit and mixing colors. She will go over the procedure for space dyeing as well. Jane Milner will be describing dyeing reed using Procion fiber-reactive dyes. In her presentation Jane will demonstrate her day long process of using Procion dye that is formulated for plant or cellulose material, not animal fiber. Fiber-Reactive means that the dye bonds chemically with the fiber, so that the colors won't fade due to light, water, or whatever. The colors will remain the same as the day the reed was dyed. Missing! The Great Basin Basketmakers Vinyl Banner has gone missing. We think it was used in a library exhibit and never came home. Do you know where it might be? Not sure yet of the exact location but those who sign up will be informed as soon as it has been scouted out. We will weave a small tule project if time allows. Bring your cutting tools and something to bundle your tule in. Remember to wear appropriate shoes or boots. Contact: Sue Ann Monteleone at samonte@charter.net Random Weave Bird's Nest Saturday, October 24, 2015, 9:00 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the St. Peter's Rectory, 300 N. Division St, Carson City with Betty Hulse. The basket structure is formed with small willow. Other natural material such as rush, sedge, iris leaves and cornhusks are added to make a random weave basket. The last step is to add dyed reed, ribbon, & yarn for color and interest. You will have the opportunity to create a unique basket. Please bring an old towel, a small soaking container, and garden scissors/shears. Fees include all other necessary supplies & tools. Fee: $25 members, $30 nonmembers. Material fees: $10. Contact: Betty Hulse: or betty.hulse5@yahoo.com NOTICE to Instructors: We Need Your Help To help offset the cost of room rentals we are asking teachers to voluntarily donate $5.00 per student back to GBB. This is not requested if you are teaching in a location that has no rental fee. Remember this is voluntary the remainder of this year and will go into effect for all classes in Thank you for your help. Great Basin Basketmakers September 2015 Page 2

3 Interlocking Base Basket September 19, 2015 (Please Note date changed from the 26) 10 am till 3 pm at St. Peter's Rectory 300 North Division St. Carson City, NV There are still openings in the class. Join Karen Rosselli for a day of creating. We will be weaving a small, (5" tall/4 1/2" wide) interwoven base basket. This is a good beginner's basket. We will learn an interesting base and also learn how to add a spoke to create an odd amount of spokes in order to weave our pattern.. We will all leave with a new, finished creation and some tips and techniques for creating more! Please bring a dishpan-sized soaking tub, small awl (if you have one), towel, and spray bottle. All other materials will be provided and don't worry if you don't have all of the supplies. I always have extra for you to use. I look forward to meeting and weaving with you! Fee: $25 members, $30 non-members. Material fees: $25. Contact Karen at: strongbear@aol.com Third Thursday Workshop for October A Twill Basket with Jane Milner Date: October 15th, 2015 Time: 9:00 AM until 4:00 PM Place: First Congregational Church, Sunnyside Street, Reno, NV Cost: Teaching Fee, guild members: $25.00, non-members: $30.00 Materials Fee: $25.00 Skill level: Intermediate: twill experience strongly advised, or the ability to read a graphed pattern (from knitting, counted cross stitch, weaving). You will be weaving several different twills! You will learn to weave a base without needing a pattern! Class size: limited to 12 Size:10" to 11" x 10" to 11", about 6" high. Materials 7 mm flat reed, 1/4" flat dyed reed, 1/2" flat oval for inside rim, 1/2" half round for outer rim. Seagrass for rim filler. Cane or artificial sinew for the lasher Color choices: The design band on the side of the basket, if done in red and natural, with the center row 3/8" green, looks like a poinsettia. If you don't want a "seasonal" basket, I will also offer indigo and natural, which looks like a quilt block called Bethlehem Star. Note: the indigo color comes from a navy fiber-reactive dye, not indigo. As always, if you want to supply your own materials, you are welcome to do so! In fact, I would encourage it! The basket has an over 3 under 3 twill base, sides are woven in a 4/4 twill, plus the area of 13 rows that forms the poinsettia design. What I will need to know from you: 1. Do you want a kit? 2. What color: red or indigo? Questions? Please contact Jane Milner at twillweaver@yahoo.com Great Basin Basketmakers September 2015 Page 3

4 Message from the President Are you interested in the workings of your organization s board of directors? Apply for the vacancy on the board. Maybe getting the word out about what a great group we have is your passion. We need someone to handle GBB publicity and an exhibits and shows chair will be needed. Was English your thing in your other life? The guild needs you to volunteer for the position of Secretary. Is learning a new computer skill on your bucket list? We have the spot for you, newsletter editor. I bet you see where I m going with this. These are a few of the openings we will have in the coming year. Please consider volunteering your time. Help make your guild run smoothly by committing your time. If you are interested you can see me or any current board member. October is the classes and programs planning meeting. Let s make 2016 a fun and informative year with plenty of good learning experiences. Come to the October meeting prepared to contribute your ideas. As for this month, Jane and Karen will be passing on their expertise in dyeing reed. It should be a program we can all learn from. Lastly, Kaylee wants to say THANK YOU EVERYONE for the well wishes. FYI: she fell August 9 and shattered her elbow. No basket weaving for her anytime soon. Kaylee, we wish you a speedy recovery. Susan GBB Fall Exhibits The two September exhibits will be our last for the year. The Sparks Library will be set up by Linda Havens on 9/3 after collecting your work at the 9/3 meeting. We have exhibited at this library in the past and know that we will need small items and a few medium ones. PLEASE bring those items to the September 3 rd meeting. Take some time to go check out the display at Northwest Library. It has been a very busy year for exhibits and we want to THANK YOU for all of your creations.
