1 Creative Experiences at WheatonArts Fall 2015 WheatonArts offers a great variety of classes and workshops in which participants have opportunities to explore various art forms, aesthetics and cultures while engaging in interactive creative experiences. Designed to accommodate various ages and skill levels, our classes and workshops encourage inter-generational creativity. During our Fall 2015 season we offer one-day workshops, intensives, multi-session classes, and collaborative art experiences. Intensives and Multi-Session Classes WheatonArts' workshops, intensives and multi-session classes provide participants with the opportunity to learn basic or advanced skills and techniques they need to create a visual language for self-expression as well as ways to tell stories, share ideas or life experiences through art. Conjuring a Vision: Storytelling through Art New September 26 & 27, Saturday & Sunday (two-day intensive) 1pm to 5pm Location: Pottery Studio Classroom Class Limit: 10 Class Fee: $60 Materials Fee: $25 (includes: watercolor paper (approx 11 x15 ), acrylic paints, brushes (flat and round) artist tape, graphite pencil and eraser, decorative paper, wheat paste glue, copper or steel wire) Registration Closing: September 19 At the heart of creative expression is the desire and opportunity to uncover profound meaning within. Residing in each of us is a treasure trove to be realized through our experiences, convictions and dreams. Most often, preoccupied with myriad responsibilities and hectic schedules, we go through our day totally unaware of the sheer abundance and potential of our innate powers, which can be harnessed to chronicle poignant visual tales that inspire ourselves and others. This two-session class teaches students to create their own visual language through the use of personal and shared cultural icons to explore symbolism by re-using images and objects to represent ideas and to tell their own inspiring story. Combining experimentation, research and constructive peer critique, students will investigate familiar social artifacts, cultural/historical relics and elements of branding, which will be incorporated in their artwork using a variety of media and techniques such as assemblage (the process of making 3D or 2D artistic compositions by putting together found objects) and collage (an artistic composition made of various materials glued onto a surface) as well as drawing and acrylic painting. This creative journey is all about courageously excavating imagery that awakens a deep sense of wonder. Instructor: Nadine LaFond Stained Glass I: Introduction to Stained Glass October 10 & 17, Saturdays 9am to 3:30pm Location: Stained Glass Studio Ages 16 and above Class Limit: 9 Class Fee: $90 Materials Fee: $20 (includes: glass, foil, solder, and use of tools) Registration Closing Date: October 3 1

2 Begin your journey with stained glass! During this class, students will learn the history of stained glass, how to cut glass, and basic design techniques while making stained glass sun catchers. Students will be guided through their own stained glass projects using the copper foil technique. Prerequisite: None. Instructor: Paul Trivellini Marquetry: The Art of Painting in Wood New November 14 & 15, Saturday and Sunday (two-day intensive) 10am to 4pm (Break for bag lunch 30 to 45 minutes) Location: Folklife/Education Building Class Limit: 10 Class Minimum: 5 Class Fee: $70 Materials Fee: $55 (includes: a precut marquetry picture, craft knife, and multicolor/multi-species of veneer leaves) Registration Closing: November 4 Marquetry is known as the art of painting in wood ; decorative woodwork in which elaborate patterns or pictures are formed by the insertion of pieces of materials (such as wood, shell, ivory, etc.) into a wood veneer that is then applied to a surface (as of a piece of furniture). This intensive two-day introductory course is for beginners. Students will be introduced to marquetry for the first time. The objective is for students to leave with a finished marquetry panel. The traditional marquetry panel could take a seasoned marquetarian about a week to create; therefore, some components will be prepared in advance. However, the students will have time to practice all of the techniques necessary to prepare a complete marquetry picture. On the first day the instructor will begin with an overview of the marquetry process and participants will examine the materials needed for the creation of the marquetry panel. Discussion on the wood to be used (its grain and structure) and the veneer cutting techniques will follow. The instructor will provide comparison between old and modern-day traditional marquetry techniques and tools and students will examine an 18th century piece to compare with recently created one. The creative process is organized into several steps: 1. drawing, 2. choice of veneer, 3. creation of a packet sandwich of all the various veneers, 4. instruction and demo of using the scroll saw and chevalet (18th century cutting tool), and 5. addressing the pre-cut components that will be later on incorporated into the marquetry picture. The work will continue on the second day with steps 6. preparing the substrate board that will be the solid base of the marquetry, 7. explanation of adhesives, 8. sand shading demonstration with student participation, 9. building the marquetry pictures (sand shading is optional), 10. filling in the voids with sawdust and 11. applying a traditional finish. The class will end with a question and answer session and a final wrap up. Instructor: Gregg Perry Casting Glass: Sandcasting October 24, Saturday 10am to 4pm Location: Glass Studio Class limit: 10 Class Fee: $286 Registration Closing Date: October 17 In this one-day class students will learn the basics of casting glass, making a sand mold, and techniques in pouring molten glass. This class is tailored to beginners or those with any process experience. This will be a mold making and pouring slam session! Prerequisite: None. Instructor: Hank Murta Adams 2

3 Glass Blowing Intensive October 17 & 18; Saturday & Sunday 10am to 4pm Location: Glass Studio Class limit: 9 Class Fee: $286 Registration Closing Date: October 10 Have only one weekend to spare? This is an experience made just for you! Students will spend two full days in our state of the art facility, learning to blow glass with a highly experienced staff. Designed for the beginning glassblower, students will learn the fundamentals of working and forming molten glass into basic shapes. Students will also become familiar with equipment and movement in the hot shop, as well as how to work with a partner. This is the perfect class to get a taste for glassblowing and its endless possibilities! Prerequisite: None. Instructor: WheatonArts Glass Studio Staff Workshops Decorative Woodcarving September 26, Saturday 2pm to 4pm Location: Folklife/Education Building Class limit: 10 Class Fee: $20 Materials Fee: $12 (*includes: pre-cut wooden panel, carving knife, sand paper, 4 natural-color wood stains and finishes - mix of flax oil and beeswax) Registration Closing: September 18 * various carving tools will be provided by the instructor The art of sculptural ornamentation of a wooden object carries timeless beauty and value. The creative process usually begins with an idea or example of inspiration in the form of a drawing, sketch or an old photograph. The carving of shapes/motifs in wood requires skill and love for work with this material. In this workshop the instructor will begin with presentation of the basic carving techniques and use of traditional carvings tools such as carving knives, chisels and gouges. Students will learn about various ways of visual mapping and shaping of design elements. They will be taken through the entire carving process from the initial work with images to the rough carving and the detail work with the fine elements of ornaments and motifs. The instructor will lead each student through the creative process and will help him/her develop skills, understand design, and appreciate working in wood while creating a unique piece of decorative art. 4 Tapestry weaving is an extended branch of weaving, where one weaves on a frame loom, not on a floor loom or a regular horizontal weaving loom. After the warp is on the frame one weaves by picking the pattern with their fingers and solidifying the pattern with moving the weft in between the threads. The weaving frames used to create varied textiles have different sizes which correspond to the actual sizes of the project in creation process. Students will learn the basics of how to weave on a frame loom. The instructor will provide projects for different levels of weaving skills so that all are welcome. Instructor: Vera Nakonechny Native American Art: Dream Catcher October 24, Saturday 2pm to 4pm Location: Education/Folklife Center Class Limit: 12 Class Fee: $20 Materials Fee: $20 (includes: leather suede cord, glue bottle, sinew, needle and feathers) Registration Closing: October 15 In this class students will learn the story of the Spider Woman and the origin of the dream catcher. The instructor will explain its meanings, sacred values, artistry and usage by the Native American people today, while leading the class through the creative process. Students will learn the techniques of wrapping, webbing and decorating the ring and will have their own finished dream catcher by the end of the class. Students will also learn how to smudge it and the meaning of the Native American smudging ceremony as related to sacred artworks, people or places. All levels are welcome! Instructor: Mark Artic Lone Wolf Boardley Sr. Jewelry Clinic New Saturdays, December 5 & 12 10am - 2pm Location: Flameworking Studio and Classroom Class Limit: 8 Class Fee: $80 Studio and Materials Fee: $15 (includes: use of tools, flameworking equipment, and materials) Registration Closing: November 28 Having trouble turning your glass beads into jewelry? Join artist Amy Lemaire for two weekends of shop talk, flameworking and jewelry assembly. The class will cover practical concerns to keep in mind when designing jewelry, and provide technical support. Students are asked to bring in their jewelry projects and questions and Amy will help them resolve their designs and improve their construction methods. There will also be opportunities for students to create their own beads using a flameworking torch and several demonstrations for the class, during which Amy will assemble a pair of earrings and a necklace. Students are asked to bring a notebook, and a current project, if they have one. Some materials will be provided, but please bring some glass beads to work with. This class is especially geared towards artists who make or use glass beads in their work, and is open to students of all levels. Instructor: Amy Lemaire Handbuilding Clay: Animal Banks New September 19, Saturday 10:30am to 11:30am Location: Pottery Studio Ages: 5 and above 4

5 Class Limit: 15 Class Fee: $15 for adults (17 and above), $10 for children (5-16 years of age) Materials Fee: $10 (includes clay, use of tools, and firing) Registration Closing: September 12 Join us in this fun collaborative art project that takes piggy-banks to the next level, perfect for individuals and families! Artist, Tessa Peterzak, will guide students through a sculptural animal bank project. Pre-made clay forms will be available for students to add decorative elements to give their animal bank a unique personality. Limit one animal bank per person or per family. All levels are welcome! Instructor: Tessa Peterzak Paper Sculpture: Wall Installations New Saturday, November 7 10am to 12pm Location: Paper Studio Ages: 5 and above Class Limit: 15 Class Fee: $15 for adults (17 and above), $10 for children (5-16 years of age) Materials Fee: $5 (includes: paper, paper pulp, and use of tools and molds) Registration Closing: October 31 Installation art is an artistic genre of artworks that are often site-specific and designed to transform the perception of a space, creating an immersive environment. In this class students will learn to use plaster press molds to create components (paper pulp tiles) for a wall installation. A variety of methods, including printing, painting and drawing, will be demonstrated as ways to add visual texture and additional color to their tiles. Pre-made tiles will be available for you to decorate while your tile/s set in the mold. All levels welcome! Instructor: Cherelle Oriolo Art Collaborative WheatonArts invite two or more artists to work in a collaborative effort to provide participants in such projects with holistic experience in one or more art forms Ceramic Arts: The Ancient Technique of Obvara New October 10, Saturday, 10am to 4pm and October 24, Saturday, 10am to 3pm Location: Pottery Studio Classroom Class Limit: 12 Class Minimum: 5 Class Fee: $105 Materials Fee: $10 (clay) Obvara Firing Only: October 24: $75 (For those choosing firing only you are required to bring your own unglazed, bisque-ware.) Registration Closing: October 1 The Obvara technique originated in the Baltic Region (Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia) during medieval times but it was also popular in Russia and Belarus. Obvara means to take a hot pot (about 1800F degrees) and immerse it in a fermented mixture of water, flour and yeast. Participants in this class will travel back in time to the medieval days when pottery fired with the Obvara technique was believed to have magic. Passed down through the generations, there has been a revival of this ancient technique around the world. 5

6 With no experience required students will make up two small sculptures to be fired with this ancient process. On Day 1 (October 10th), the instructor will provide an introduction to the Obvara technique with images of work being created around the world. Students will be guided and can choose from different types of projects, or the more experienced can work on their sculptural work independently. On Day 2 (October 24th), using the ancient technique, students will remove their work from the kiln with special tongs and immerse it in the Obvara mixture to produce stunning pieces ranging from off-white to almost black. On this stage of the work a raku kiln will be used and the instructor will collaborate with other ceramic artists to guide the participants through the firing process. Students can register for both days or only for the firing on the second day.
