5 EU-China Industry Collaboration Opportunities Company name: Munich Orientation Convention (MOC) MOC has developed a natural orientation system which simplifies all orientation means including postal codes and room numbers. The system makes smarter, sharpens the orientation sense, and helps to minimize signage and accidents and to create innovative income sources. A tricky coordinates converter generates codes for targets, crossings stations, stop points, bridges etc. in harmony with imagination, signage, cartography search machines and online and mobile applications. Such codes can be commercialized like internet domains and the user is able to guide himself. Special pictograms on signage and navigation devices let detect the directions north and downtown. It has been organised by the SHERPA project team in collaboration with the European GNSS Agency (GSA). He Shoots, He Scores! JOHAN Wins EGNOS Prize at ESNC 2013 (November 6) A concept to monitor field sports in real-time has won this year s GSA Special Topic Prize in the European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC). Project JOHAN will enable assessment of players performances and the development of new tactics based on players capabilities. The idea employs tiny wearable GNSS receivers and uses EGNOS to ensure accuracy and reliability. The project received the prize at the Galileo Masters / ESNC 2013 awards ceremony that took place in Munich on 5 November. Galileo Satellites Put to the Test (November 11) Europe s next pair of Galileo satellites have been the focus of a busy autumn at the European Space Agency s (ESA s) technical centre in the Netherlands, continuing a full-scale campaign to ensure their readiness for space.

7 Getting more out of your satellite TV (November 12) Thanks to Global Invacom and ESA, you could one day distribute satellite TV programmes to devices around your home via the Internet. _out_of_your_satellite_tv H2020 Opens Door for EGNSS Applications Development (November 13) Satellite navigation technology is an increasingly common component of innovative applications in different sectors. There are already around 2.2 billion devices with GNSS capability used globally and it is expected that by 2022 the number will grow to 7 billion, almost one GNSS enabled device for every person on the planet. Galileo 2.0: A Gold Mine for European Industry (November 14) The Galileo 2.0 debate at the European Parliament in Brussels on October 15 outlined the huge opportunity that the Galileo initiative can bring to European industry. Described as a veritable gold mine by one speaker, European companies are getting ready to deliver the innovative products and services that Galileo and EGNOS can enable. And the European GNSS Agency (GSA) is ready to help: from funding application research to support in the marketplace. Munich Expo Showcases Solutions from Space (November 15) The latest stop for the European Space Expo was Munich. The Bavarian region s administrative centre is often described as a capital of the European aerospace industry. And Munich s citizens and students certainly showed great enthusiasm for discovering EU space technology with thousands of visitors passing through the doors of the Expo last week (5-10 November 2013).

8 The free exhibition coincided with a major meeting on space technology and business: the European Space Solutions conference. EGNOS For Maritime: Trusted Position, Extensive Availability (November 15) You ve seen how EGNOS is assisting safety and efficiency in road and aviation. But what about the maritime sector? A new video has just been produced showing what EGNOS is doing now for craft of all sizes, from ocean-going container ships to leisure boats on the river, and what Galileo promises for the future afloat. Free access to Copernicus Sentinel satellite data (November 15) The European Delegated Act on Copernicus data and information policy will enter into force in the coming days. This Act provides free, full and open access to users of environmental data from the Copernicus programme, including data from the Sentinel satellites. s_sentinel_satellite_data Galileo Prime Contractor Expects No Trouble Finding a Profit as European Navigation Satellites Encounter New Delays (November 15) The prime contractor of Europe s 22 Galileo positioning, navigation and timing satellites said it is likely to retain its planned profit on the program despite delays that have caused European Commission officials to threaten penalties. Galileo 2.0: Moving Forward To Operation (November 18) A high-level debate on October 15 at the European Parliament in Brussels saw politicians giving the European GNSS Agency (GSA) a very positive review. The event marked the first anniversary

9 of GSA s move to its new headquarters in Prague and looked forward to a new operational phase as Galileo services come online to join EGNOS during Space: Smart Solutions for Smart Cities (November 19) On the evening of 6 November, the European Space Expo hosted the official reception for the European Space Solutions conference in Munich. The event showcased a range of space-based solutions for enabling smarter cities that can bring benefits to citizens living in an increasingly urbanised world. The highlighted projects featured both Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) and Earth Observation technologies. Europe is ready to Mobilise (November 19) The day-long event will bring together mobile technology stakeholders to discuss how Europe can re-emerge as a leader in mobile technology. Parliament Approves Financing for the European Satellite Navigation Programmes until 2020 (November 19) Their total budget of 7 billion will be used for the completion of the satellite navigation infrastructure, operations, necessary replenishment and replacement activities, development of fundamental elements such as Galileo-enabled chipsets or receivers and, most importantly, the provision of services. The responsibility for the progress of the programmes and their overall supervision will stay with the Commission. The European GNSS Agency will gradually assume responsibility for the operational management of the programmes while the European Space Agency will remain responsible for the deployment of Galileo, and the design and development of new generation of systems.

10 Space Solutions for Emergency Response (November 20) European Space Solutions conference focused on emergency response and disaster management. Accurate location data is essential for an efficient and timely response in any emergency and positioning satellite technology is the key to providing such data. MEPs give green light to Galileo, the EU alternative to America s GPS (November 20) Plans to start up the EU s first global satellite navigation system (GNSS) built under civilian control, entirely independent of other navigation systems and yet interoperable with them, were approved by MEPs on Wednesday. Both parts of this global system - Galileo and EGNOS - will offer citizens a European alternative to America s GPS or Russia s Glonass signals for many applications in their daily lives. European Space Solutions: Benefits and Opportunities (November 21) The European Space Solutions Conference 2013 was held in Munich 5 7 November. The conference brought together representatives of the public and private sectors, along with users and developers of space-based solutions. The theme was how space technology makes a real difference in our daily lives, with a particular focus on challenges and opportunities for European satellite technologies. Farming by Satellite Grows - Pushing the Creative Edge of EGNOS and Galileo (November 22) With cash prizes totalling EUR and a wider geographical scope for entries, the second edition of the Farming by Satellite Competition is now open for submissions. The aim of the competition is to promote the use of satellite technologies in agriculture and their benefits to end users. The competition, an initiative of the European GNSS Agency (GSA), is supported by agricultural machinery manufacturers CLAAS and crop science experts Bayer.

11 Galileo Masters 2013: GNSS gets personal (November 22) The 10th edition of the joint European Satellite Navigation Competition (ESNC) and Copernicus Masters 2013 ceremony was a festive evening held in conjunction with the opening day of the European Space Solutions conference in Munich. The event put the spotlight on innovative entrepreneurs and application developers utilising satellite navigation and earth observation technologies and was attended by high level personalities from government, institutions and industry. Extending the Galileo Test Campaign to ECall Manufacturers (November 25) In conjunction with the introduction of the ecall in-vehicle systems set to use GNSS satellite positioning, including EGNOS and Galileo, and in view of Galileo Early Services, the European GNSS Agency (GSA) announces the opportunity for ecall device manufacturers to test Galileo compatibility. Experts Seek to Harness Galileo for Science at Fourth Colloquium The Fourth International Galileo Colloqium, taking place in Prague, Czech Republic, December 4-6, will bring together leading members of the European scientific community and their international partners. They will propose ways of increasing Galileo s scientific uses to those in charge of operating and developing the system, and to contribute to future satellite navigation development based on scientific approaches. Space Solutions for Better Mobility (November 27) The European Space Solutions conference covered aspects of transport on land (chaired by the European GNSS Agency (GSA) and water, with a focus on how space solutions are making a real impact on the mobility of goods and people both regionally and world-wide.

12 First Fully Operational Galileo Craft Clears Thermal-vacuum Test (November 27) PARIS The first of Europe s full-operational-capability Galileo positioning, navigation and timing satellites has successfully completed a crucial four weeks of thermal-vacuum testing, paving the way for the other 21 satellites to be processed, prime contractor OHB AG said Nov EGNOS safer landings scheme extended to Ukraine (November 27, European Commission) Ukraine will be able to benefit from the European EGNOS scheme, which will make air transport safer, will open up business opportunities and will improve the GPS signal for private users. In this context, European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani and Ukrainian Vice-Prime Minister Oleksandr Vylkul signed a Joint Statement in Brussels today declaring both sides' intention to include the Ukrainian territory in the coverage of EGNOS (the European Geostationary Overlay Service). It was announced at the end of a recent key policy meeting, the 3rd Plenum of the CPC Central Committee. The guiding principles include reform of defense industrial systems, and welcoming more civilian companies to enter military scientific research, production and maintenance.
