1 Brief Introduction to Degree Program in Control Science and Engineering (0811) I. Brief Introduction to the Discipline 1. Orientation and Goal Southwest Jiaotong University (SWJTU) is one of the oldest universities to conduct teaching and academic research in Control Science and Engineering (CSE) in China. The very first activity in this field can be traced back to the 1940s with the major of Railway Signal Control. In the 1960s the major of railway automation was established, and graduate education was initiated in In 2010, CSE was authorized to confer doctoral degrees as a first-level discipline. CSE is also one of the key disciplines of Sichuan province, to which the School of Electrical Engineering, the School of Transportation and Logistics, the School of Information Science and Technology, and the Intelligent Control and Simulation Engineering Research Center contribute in different second-level disciplines. Focusing on the area of traffic automation and intelligent traffic control and the associated great demand from the aspects of high-speed railway, heavy haul railway and urban rail transit, the discipline of CSE aims to perform studies on basic theory and innovation technology, to cultivate technology leaders and engineering talents, serve the society actively, and guide the direction of the development of traffic automation and intelligent traffic control. 2. Advantages and Features 1.1 Well-complemented and Prominent Faculty CSE of SWJTU possesses an academic team of decent construction. Among the 67 falculty members, there are 42teachers holding a Ph.D. degree. The faculty team is very young with 42members younger than 45 years. A good part of the faculty staves (32.8%) have experiences of working (more than 10 months) or studying in overseas. Four professors are selected into the One Hundred Talents Program launched by Sichuan province, which is the top-level program for leading academics in the province. 1.2 Advanced Scientific Researches Tremendous engineering problems raised in the traffic field have been solved by virtue of advanced control theories and simulation technologies, which strongly promote the technical
2 progress of railway transport of China. A couple of examples are listed as follows: (1) Simulation technology for large-scale and complex devices is a major strength of CSE in SWJTU. A series of simulation training systems of rail transit operation have been developed, which meet the urgent demands of railway transport in a systematic manner. These important researches and products including traffic flow simulation, train simulation, train automatic control and automation driving simulation, have dominated the major market in China, and won the First Prize of the Scientific and Technological Progress Award of Sichuan province in (2) Adhesion control is a vital technology for high-speed and heavy-load trains. A fuzzy system identification method that possesses the characteristic of structural self-adaptation was proposed to deal with the significant problems in adhesion control of electric locomotives. More importantly, equipment designed for adhesion control were developed. Compared with the similar products provided by the international companies, e.g., Siemens and Alstom, the superiority has been proven by applying them into high-power electric locomotives made in China. (3) Innovation has been achieved in energy management and optimization of hybrid power systems, motion control of railway systems, and re-generation of braking energy. With the proposal of green transport systems, these energy-saving and environmental technologies are successfully applied in certain equipment manufacturing enterprises and designing institutes. (4) Advanced control and fault diagnosis methods for rail transit are also strength of CSE in SWJTU. For traction drive control, we have built the function space model and comprehensive analysis method for digital control systems of multiple sampling rates. The first monograph that focuses on digital control systems of multiple sampling rates in China has been published by our team. Considering the security monitoring of high-speed train s serving characteristics, we proposed a method of fault prediction based on reflection of system state, and novel schemes for network control and diagnosis of train systems. (5) To address the extensibility and maintainability problems of rail transit comprehensive monitoring, we extended the key technical theory of autonomous decentralized train dispatching and controlling system, and also proposed the theory of satisfactory optimization, which forms the basic theory and method to describe the satisfactory optimization principle of the ITS command system. In addition, certain complex-system-based optimization methods have been adopted to resolve the difficulties in large-scale combination of transport systems. 3. First-class Wide-Ranging Facilities and Platforms The construction of the discipline of CSE is supported by a series of high-level research and teaching platforms, such as the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education in Maglev Technology and Maglev Train, the National Basic Experimental Centre of Electrical Engineering, the National Experimental Centre of Virtual Simulation for Electrification and Automation of Rail
3 Transportation, the National Engineering Practice Education Centre of SWJTU-Sichuan Changhong Electric Co., the Key Laboratory of Maglev Train and Magnetism Application of Sichuan Province, the Research Centre of Intelligent Control and Simulation Engineering, etc. Meanwhile, the joint laboratories constructed together with Rockwell, Schneider Electric, Freescale, B&R, etc. also provide strong support for the development of the discipline of CSE. 4. Graduates with High Prestige The majors associated with the discipline of CSE include Electrical Engineering and Its Automation, and Electronic and Information Engineering, etc., which belong to the categories of national key or distinctive majors, as well as the training majors for outstanding engineer. They have passed the corresponding authentication of national engineering education, which attract abundant attention from outstanding students. In 2014, two teaching achievement prizes, one is state-level and the other one is provenience-level, have been awarded. Moreover, each year training is provided for personnel from rail transportation enterprises, which clearly improves the professional skills of railway engineers. 5. Set-ups of Discipline The first-level discipline of CSE consists of four second-level sub-disciplines, namely, Control Theory and Control Engineering, Detection Technology and Automation Devices, Pattern Recognition and Intelligent Systems, and Systems Engineering. 6. Impacts The faculty members are very active in academic communication. Many professors are holding important positions in international and domestic academic organizations, such as the Discipline Appraisal Group under the State Council, National Education Steering Committee. -Besides, many professors participated in the national inspection for security of high-speed railways. Supported by Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Workshop on the Development Strategy of Control Theory was held in SWJTU in 2012, the Second Asian Conference on Membrane Computing was organized by SWJTU in Currently the 35 th Chinese Control Conference (CCC2016) in under preparation with more than 2000 participants from all over the world expected. In the last 4 years, members of CSE attended international conferences for more than 100 times, some of them took the positions of IPC members, session chairs, and so on. In particular, our staff was offered the IEEE ICCA Best Presentation Award in CSE of SWJTU has established long-term cooperation with many academic and technological organizations, such as the Cornell University, the University of Alberta, Tokyo Institute of Technology, Technical University of Munich, University of Wuerzburg, European Association for Standardization of Ethernet, and International Union of Railways, as well as many

We also provide joint-supervision programs towards postgraduates with Hanoi Jiaotong University. Ⅱ. 10 Brief Introduction to Degree Program in Electrical Engineering (0808) Ⅰ.Brief Introduction to the Discipline 1. Orientation and Goal History: In 1949, the discipline of electrical engineering (EE) was established by Academician Cao Jianyou of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1981, it was granted to confer PhD degrees (in the first batch) and in 1987 it was awarded the National Key Discipline. In 1999, it was awarded one of the Tier-1 Disciplines to confer PhD degrees and host postdoctoral researchers, under which the Tier-2 discipline Electrical Power Systems and Automation was a National Key Discipline and the Tier-2 discipline Power Electronics and Electric Drives was a National Key Discipline (Being fostered). Orientation: To educate students, carry out research and serve the society in the areas of Electrification and Automation of Rail Transport and Renewable Energy. Objectives: To lead the scientific advancement and personnel training of Electrification and Automation of Rail Transport, and to develop the discipline into a first-class discipline in the world. 2. Advantages and Features 2.1 Well-complemented and Prominent Faculty The discipline of EE possesses a large pool of prominent scholars and professors, including two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, three national 1000-plan talents, two Yangtze chair professors, four National Distinguished Youths, one national 1000-plan young talent, two candidates for the National Pacesetter Project, two winners of National Award for Distinguished Experts, six Provincial Hundred (Thousand) Talents, six leaders of Academic Technology in Sichuan, nine candidates for leaders of Academic Technology in Sichuan, three winners of Outstanding Youths, five experts who receive Special Allowance from the State Council, one winner of National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Awards, and three candidates for National Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Awards, one winner of National Excellent Teacher Award and two winners of Sichuan Excellent Teacher Award. 2.2 First-class Wide-ranging Facilities and Platforms
11 With the support of the 211-project, 985-project, and the 2011 Collaborative Innovation Partnerships, the discipline is the home of six national and provincial platforms, including the National Engineering Research Center for Electrification and Automation of Rail Transportation and the Key Laboratory of the Department of Education for Maglev Trains. The discipline is also an important part of the National Key Laboratory of Traction Power Systems. Moreover, discipline is the home of the National Demonstration Center for Experiments in Electrical Engineering, the National Teaching Center of Simulations in Electrification and Automation of Rail Transportation, and the joint National Demonstration Center for Experiments in Physics Education. 2.3 Fruitful Achievements in Rail-Transport Education Teaching-reform has been consecutively awarded the first prize of National Teaching Achievement once and second prize three times.faculty members have received recognition for excellence in teaching with two Nation-wide Shared Courses, four National Elite Courses, one National Open Course, and seven Elite Courses in Sichuan. We have published seven textbooks under the 11 th five-year plan, ten textbooks under the 12 th five-year plan and seven textbooks under the plan of the Railway Ministry. One paper got National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations Award and three papers were nominated for National Outstanding Doctoral Dissertations. 2.4 Advanced Scientific Researches The EE discipline of SWJTU has been leading the advancement of rail-transport technologies. We established the Electric Transportation before the era of electrifying the railway to educate the talents required. We proposed the voltage scheme for electrified railways at the beginning of electrifying the railway. During the process of electrifying the railway, we developed the first remote-operated micro-computer-controlled traction power systems, the first automation system for sub-stations, and the first vehicle for detecting faults in overhead systems. During the development of high-speed trains, we developed the first monitoring system for the distribution system of high-speed trains, the first digital traction substation, the first 6C system for overhead systems, the world s first co-phase traction power system, and the world s first energy-saving traction transformer, etc. We have also developed the first maglev passenger train and the longest commercial medium-low speed maglev trains in Changsha. 2.5 Graduates with High Prestige About 80% of the managers, both administrative and technological, in electrification and automation of rail transport graduated from this discipline. Graduates Ding Rongjun and Jiang Xianguo are the only academician and design master in the field.
12 2.6 Close Collaboration with Industry The close collaboration with industry, e.g. the development of the first monitoring system for the distribution system of high-speed trains, has not only supported the development of the high-speed trains in China but also it has advanced the development of the discipline. 3. Set-ups of the Discipline The discipline of Electrical Engineering consists of several sub-disciplines, including Traction Power System and Its Automation, Traction and Drive, Power System and Its Automation, Power Electronics and Electrical Drives, Motors and Electric Apparatus, New Technology of Electrical Theory, High Voltage and Insulation Technologies, Electrification and Automation of Rail Transport, Electromagnetic Suspension and Superconducting Engineering etc. 4. Impacts 4.1 Irreplaceable Role in Rail Transport and Significant Social Impact The EE Team has provided important consultancies to the strategic planning and the standardization of the rail transport sector, and provided a large amount of technological consultancies and services to the companies in this sector, bringing significant social impact. We have developed and provided numerous key technologies and equipment to support the fast growth of China s railway industry. For example, almost all the monitoring systems for the distribution systems of high-speed trains, 80% of monitoring systems for the key operational traction equipment, and 65% of the automation systems for traction substations are originated from the discipline. A troop of our excellent graduates worked in the field of rail transit and the textbooks we edited are widely used in related colleges and universities. Every year, administrative and technical backbones from the Railway Ministry (China Railway Engineering Corporation) participate in our training program. 2. Extensive Academic Exchanges with High Reputation Worldwide The discipline of EE has established long-term collaborative partnerships with over 30 renowned companies and over 20 universities, including UIC, Cornell University and Tokyo Institute of Technology. We have set up joint laboratories with leading international companies, such as Rockwell, Schneider Electric, and Freescale, and a joint Engineering Research Center in Hong Kong with Hong Kong Polytechnic University. More than 20 world-renowned scholars are appointed as part-time visiting professors or advisory professors, including Tongwen Chen (Academician of Canada Academy of Engineering, Canada), Steven A. Boggs (Toronto University, Canada), and Kinji Mori (Waseda University, Japan).
