It is very clear that we have grown up alongside satellite receivers and satellite dishes. The fact that we do our own in-house development and production means that we can fine-tune every aspect and bring devices onto the market that meet not only the needs of our clients, but that are also finely attuned to trends of top automobile manufacturers. 5 YOUR VISION OUR MISSION TechniSat Automotive Everything from a single source The TechniSat Automotive Business Division develops and produces innovative products and software solutions for car infotainment, vehicle networking and telematics. As a Tier 1 supplier to the automotive industry, the business division has many decades of experience in the development and production of first-class systems for series-production of well-known car manufacturers. Software solutions for navigation, tuners and telematics are also within the comprehensive competencies of the company. The product solutions are developed in the TechniSat R&D Centre in Dresden. In addition to this central development location, TechniSat also has development locations in China and the USA for specific market-related requirements. The products are primarily manufactured in the two TechniSat factories in Dippach (Thüringen, Germany) and Oborniki (Poland). Some 15 years ago, the TechniSat Automotive Business Division started developing simple radio systems, which just had a cassette tapeplayer or CD drive. Some years later, navigation systems then became part of the basic equipment of many vehicles. Nowadays the expectations of consumers go far beyond this. Apart from a networked navigation system with real-time traffic information, speech control and touch display, these days we expect online access and telematics services to be also available. Furthermore, a progressive system should come complete with the capability of wireless connection to mobile appliances such as mobile phones and tablets and should be part of a home network. Above all, the core competence of the TechniSat Automotive Business Division is the complete development of complex and scalable head units, whilst the development of software solutions such as, for example, Software Defined Radio or Navigation platforms is also becoming increasingly important. These core competencies are complemented by the seemingly limitless range of connectivity. On the one hand, smooth data exchange with mobile appliances such as smartphones or handsfree equipment is becoming increasingly important whilst, on the other hand, networking beyond the limits of the vehicle is also being extended so that not only can any appliance from the range of consumer electronics be connected to the vehicle environment, but even the vehicle itself is now becoming part of the personal home network. The field of telematics is moreover extending all-round communication even further, since data exchange with the Cloud is becoming possible and, for example, the functions of the vehicle can be remotely controlled by phone or from home using a mobile phone. 10

There is no doubt that this is based on its many decades of experience. TechniSat introduced the first digital satellite radio receiver to the market back in 1991 and in 1995 developed the first Astra digital radio-receiver in the world. Its experience in car radio also goes back many decades. Prior to the unification of Germany, the production factory in Thüringen was one of the largest car radio producers for the former Eastern Bloc countries. The skills of our experts in this field, which has been constantly developed, are much sought-after these days by internationally successful companies. In particular, its tremendous level of experience in the field of hardware development, plus the many years of global experience, have enabled Techni- Sat s skills to occupy an almost unique position in the market. Because tuner reception systems vary considerably in the different markets all over the world, it is even more important to accumulate worldwide experience and to channel this know-how into further ongoing development activities. From Shanghai and San Carlos in San Francisco Bay, TechniSat s engineers are continuously checking all reception modes from different digital radio signals up to satellite radio reception. The subject of digital radio is of particular special importance at TechniSat. As a member of the WorldDMB DAB Forum, TechniSat underlines its strong commitment to the subject and is collaborating intensively with the introduction of international standards for the fields of Digital Audio Broadcasting (DAB) and Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (DMB). The aim is to create a consensus for the positive and far-reaching introduction of DAB-based services (DAB/DAB+/DMB). As part of this, TechniSat has been successfully installing DAB systems for many years, not only in the automotive field, and it offers, in addition, a well-sorted range of DAB radio products. Having its own solutions in the field of software-defined radio makes the TechniSat organisation unique in the field of tuners because this enables it to extend the range of functions at will. TechniSat s DAB-FM Seamless Linking is also outstanding and provides perfectly timed and qualitative synchronisation of the different reception modes in the event of reception problems when on the road. 13

TechniSat s own navigation platform is functionally scalable and gives TechniSat an enormously high level of flexibility in functional extensions. Its comprehensive expertise in programming and optimal application of graphic engines and in the numerous added-value services for navigation applications also gives TechniSat an outstanding position in the navigation systems market. These days, the requirements of a navigation system no longer consist of just media and navigation functions with a dynamic navigation. The user nowadays expects to have access to online services and updates at all times and everywhere they go. These include, for example, Cloud services, access to the telephone address book of the networked mobile phone or the use of realtime traffic information for the personalised routing strategy in the navigation system. In future the Navigation Data Standard (NDS) will also be part of the standard equipment of a navigation system. TechniSat was one of the first companies worldwide to develop a navigation system using the NDS standard and has introduced this into series-production with well-known vehicle manufacturers, so that the worldwide compatibility of map updates, the very latest incremental updates or the loading of content will be enabled. Also on the issue GENIVI with its modular structural system for standardised interfaces, Techni- Sat is, as co-chair for standardisation, at the heart of the action as the industry alliance GENIVI commits to the broad adoption of an In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) open-source development platform based on Open Source Software. 15

Personalized Routing The personalization feature allows the adjustment of the route regarding user specific driving behaviour and preferences. The depth integration of live weather data gives the driver on-demand access to in information about the weather at his destination. Social Navigation Picking up a friend, a business appointment or the coordination of convoys requires an enormous amount of synchronization. The integration of features linked to social networks break the existing barrier between on-board and on-line world. All relevant information is natively and intuitively integrated into the car and driving environment. The Car evolves into a mobile device. 16

In particular, orientation in foreign cities is eased through the display of 3D landmarks and creates an improved relation to the world outside the car. Real World Maps An even more intensive integration of the cars real world environment is reached through the display of the navigation map on basis of satellite and aerial images. The comparison of the driver perception and the displayed map becomes significantly easier. Additional navigation information is layered above the satellite images. Hence, the real world and the additional information fuse into a single context with intuitive understanding. Feature Based Route Guidance The traditional manoeuver recommendations After 100 meters turn left and then turn right. is improved with additional information regarding the upcoming manoeuvers environment. In that way, traffic lights and well visible points-of-interest, like gas stations, improve the driver experience. The extended guidance After 100 meters turn left at the traffic lights and then turn left after the gas station reduce the necessity to actually look at the displayed manoeuver to a minimum. 17

Apart from that, the product life cycles of these two fields vary enormously so that a connection must be made in this respect. The costs for the development of infotainment systems are constantly increasing and as an industry average amount to some million Euros over a period of three years. The proportion of the costs for electrical and electronic components in the vehicle is already > 25%. Since the expectations of customers continue to increase, these costs will also increase accordingly. In addition to that, the infotainment system is becoming an increasingly important part of a customer s purchasing decision. As a result of this development, suppliers such as TechniSat are called upon to find alternative ways of integrating the CE appliances into the vehicle s environment, whilst, at the same time, guaranteeing safety within the vehicle. In this we differentiate between installed applications, which themselves run on the infotainment system and have access to the vehicle s basic data (GPS data, speed, etc.,) and can use this information and mobile applications, installed on external appliances, and the operation of which is simply enabled via the infotainment system. Solutions such as MirrorLink, for example, are now already being installed as standard equipment in the vehicle. Standard items such as data transfer via Bluetooth or WLAN have also been part of the expected equipment of a networked vehicle for quite some time. In addition, greater emphasis will be placed on the fact that one can have access to personal information at all times. The infotainment system should therefore be able to access the data on your mobile phone or be capable of downloading and processing content from your personal Cloud. 19

23 YOUR VISION OUR MISSION Cloud Telematics & data services The home network nowadays also includes the vehicle. It has no longer been enough for some time just to make personal data available in the vehicle. More and more, the consumer would also like to have access to his vehicle s data on his mobile appliance whilst away from home and, for example, to check whether the vehicle is locked or to switch on the pre-heating system. This is where TechniSat s telematics system comes into play. The integration of a WAN modem permits the use of various online services. Both GSM, UMTS and HSPA+ and LTE can be integrated to meet customer requirements. Exchanging of vehicle data is also possible since the module can be connected to the vehicle s BUS system. In this way the location of the vehicle using GPS coordinates can be determined in an emergency. Using his mobile phone, the driver can call up or check specific information such as, for example, the range of his battery or can check whether the lights are switched off. In addition, the owner of the vehicle can control these functions remotely via his mobile phone and, for example, can switch on the pre-heating system or sound the horn when trying to find the vehicle. The communicating of real-time information is also possible with the TechniSat telematics solution, in order to receive up-to-date information about traffic conditions or to find the way to what is at that particular time the cheapest filling station. At TechniSat, secure connection of the system is of primary importance in the development of the wide range of possible functions. The sensitive vehicle data must always be protected from unauthorised access. TechniSat has, for this reason, guaranteed strict separation between basic services and user applications. This integrated safety system allows the TechniSat telematics module to use the vehicle s data and process the applications and incoming information, but on a separate application platform. The TechniSat Telematics module has a built-in intelligent power management system: The system controls energy consumption and switches to the sleep mode whenever no information exchange is taking place. Energy consumption is reduced to a minimum in this way and the demanding automotive requirements are fulfilled in terms of energy management. This feature of the system is hugely important to allow the vehicle to be started even after many weeks when it may not have been possible to charge the battery in the intervening period. As the supplier of exceedingly complex and integral car infotainment systems, TechniSat has many years of experience and the skills to design a telematics module either as a separate built-in solution or to install a direct high-speed data link on the head unit via Ethernet, MOST or USB. The exchange of vehicle data is a decisive competitive advantage, particularly for fleet vehicles, car rental companies, car sharing schemes and even insurance companies. 23

From here administration, distribution and marketing activities are operated. There are approx. 350 employees who act in distribution, marketing, purchasing, service, technology, IT and financing. The management and administration of the business division Automotive are also located in Daun. They form the interface between the different locations like R&D in Dresden, Shanghai and San Carlos, the production plant in Dippach and Oborniki and the resident engineers worldwide. The strategic and operative project purchasing for the Automotive division have specialized on the specific requirements of a Tier1 supplier. They use the synergies at the location in Daun, such as the central purchasing for CE products. The purchasing department coordinates the selection and qualification of suppliers, material hedging and the management of purchasing parts. They work closely together with the disposition and the development centre in order to adjust the customised technical solutions and components (material hedging for the whole product life cycle) to the production conditions and customer requirements in an ideal way. 25

27 YOUR VISION OUR MISSION The source of innovations R&D Centre in Dresden Since 1990 the TechniSat Digital GmbH Dresden has been the Research and Development Centre of the company and the origin of all developed products by TechniSat. The original team of 23 qualified developers - most of them from the former Centre for Science and Technology in Dresden - has grown into a highly motivated development team with more than 500 engineers. They develop both digital reception technology and infotainment systems and software solutions for the automotive industry. The know-how of the R&D Centre is all-embracing and covers the construction (layout and mechanical construction) as well as the development of hardware and software. In addition there are numerous laboratories for EMC / ESD, reliability, climatic endurance, mechanical consistency and optic characteristics. The high quality of the products is assured by large-scale, continuous test procedures. These tests are already performed during the development and are continued during the transfer to production as well as during the serial production, under the direction of the specifically created quality assurance department. 27

29 Production at the highest stage In May 1990 TechniSat Elektronik Thüringen was established. The production facilities and the employees came from the former VEB Elektrotechnik Eisenach (government-run company of the former GDR), which used to be one of the biggest manufacturer of car radios in the former Eastern Bloc. After producing set top boxes in the first couple of years, the production plant returned to the automotive market segment. In 1998 the first TechniSat branded radio was produced and two years later the production plant started serial production for the automotive industry. Until now more than 6 million OEM car radios and navigation devices have been produced in Dippach for wellknown automobile brands such as Volkswagen, Škoda, Seat and Bugatti. Since November 2008 the plant is exclusively producing products for the business division TechniSat Automotive. The production processes have been adjusted to the specific requirements of the automotive industry. Today the plant has a production capacity of more than 1 million devices a year, dependent on the product mix. Moreover the company employs many highly-qualified people, some of them which have more than 30 years of experience in the production of electronic components and car radios. In 2011 TechniSat started to produce in the production plant TechniSat Digital Sp.z o.o Oborniki in Poland according to identical process criteria. The plant was newly constructed in 2006 and has been further expanded for Automotive products in 2011 so that the plant has an additional capacity of more than 1 million units for the production of Automotive products. 29

31 YOUR VISION OUR MISSION All production orders are assembled and mounted on stateof-the-art equipment. The total manufacturing process is monitored by efficient inspection concepts, which test the semifinished and final products with regard to functionality and quality. Different test procedures are used from optical test procedures such as Automatic Optical Inspection, 3D solder-paste inspection or X-ray tests to electric/electronic test procedures like Inline Incircuit Test and Boundary Scan. Every manufacturing ramp-up is realised together with a continuous screening procedure, in which the devices are tested in special climate cabinets in short-term, medium-term and long-term in order to reveal potential deviations from specifications as early as possible. Finally different samples are inspected again in final audits so that all devices leave the production plant towards customer tested several times. Another decisive factor in the success and economic feasibility of a product is intense and continuous collaboration between the engineers in development and production. At all stages during the creation of the production layout, we place great value on the inclusion of the various development areas in order both to guarantee optimum producibility under technical and economic conditions, and to ensure optimum product and process quality. The TechniSat quality management system assures not only the internal quality targets but also monitors the whole supply chain. Thus the supplier quality is observed by regular supplier audits. The results of the continuous validations of product and process capability are applied to the production process immediately. By continuously improving the process and through an appropriate automation the plant is able to assure high productivity and efficiency. 33

These workshops for people with disabilities make an outstanding contribution to society with their work, but they are also sustainable enterprise that need to find the correct balance between economic activity and humanity. The needs of the people in the workshops are unique, so processes need to be structured to be both suitable for the disabled and at the same time technically advanced. Quality tests at the end of assembly indicate that this concept is a great success.
