2 PROGRAM FOR JANUARY January s speaker is Tess who runs Wildflower long arm studio (Formally Woodpecker Ridge Studio), just outside Gibsons. She offers fast reliable long arm quilting services. We will also be lucky to have Uschi accompany her, and bring some of her works of art as well We hope everyone can stay for a terrific trunk show, I don't think you will be disappointed. We have 2 new books in the library this month: "Quilting on the Go...English Paper Piecing" by Sharon Burgess It has suggestions for small take along projects "Stitched Sewing Organizers" by Aneela Hoey I love some of the cases, pouches and pin cushions. COMMUNITY QUILTS FEBRUARY 15 and 16 We have some kits made up, ready to sew. Please pick one up at the January meeting. Sew up a "topper" ready to bring back in February for community quilt day. We'll have a sign-up sheet available for the various jobs. Hopefully we will have a lot of machines, for quilting, binding and making up toppers. Don't forget to bring your lunches! Thanks. 5 Message from the Executive Director Happy New Year! And with the new year there are some important deadlines approaching, ongoing initiatives that you can participate in, and news items. Check the website for the latest updates. The following items are of note: Quilt Canada 2018 Workshop Registration - Don't miss out on your member discount for workshops and daytime lectures! Registration for workshops will open on January 8, 2018 at noon EST for members and noon EST January 29, 2018 for non-members. Your member discount can be applied to your registration of workshops and daytime lectures from January 8 (noon EST) through January 29, 2018 (11 am EST). In addition to our wonderful selection of classes using Janome domestic sewing machines, we are excited to be offering long-arm quilting classes. Kathleen Riggins will be teaching her six half day classes on the Handi Quilter Simply Sixteen machines. And just added before the holidays, Sharon Blackmore, Gammill Quilt Artist, will be teaching her long arm classes on Gammill machines. The National Juried Show entry deadline is fast approaching. Entries must be received by January 31, 2018 by 3:00pm EST. The Guild Rosette Invitational entry process opens January 22, Entries are limited to those quilts which won a CQA/ACC Rosette at your guild show in 2017 and had a photo of the quilt with the ribbon displayed on the CQA/ACC website by the end of Entries will be limited to the first 25 entry forms submitted. Go to our website to see full information. The entry form will be available on January 22nd.. There are still a few kits available for the 2018 Trend Tex Challenge. 6 Reserve the dates for Quilt Canada 2019! The conference will be held in Ottawa, June 12-15, 2019 at the EY Centre. The theme of this conference is " Quilting Goes Viral!" The next generation of quilters were busy prior to the holidays creating their quilted Christmas stocking from a pattern by our Youth Coordinator, Sheryl Garrett. The pattern appeared in the Winter issue of Canadian Quilter magazine. See below for pictures of our Youth showing off their quilted project. CQA/ACC hopes to continue to expand participation of youth in the creative world of quilting with additional content in our magazine and on our website. 8 Hi Trish, The ladies at the quilt to you Wilt asked for this recipe. I brought this cake that my grandmother used to make. I sliced it in half and put Blackberry jelly in between the layers the icing with cream cheese with a little raspberry extract. I put fresh raspberries on top. Owner and quilter extraordinaire Sylvia Pippen filled Indigo Stitch with her signature products stitch and appliqué kits, BOM projects, sashiko supplies, solid cottons, books, notions and more. A nationally recognized teacher, Sylvia combines hand appliqué, contemporary and traditional sashiko designs, and perfectly toned fabrics in her detailed compositions. Flora, sea creatures and birds abound. Inspiration surrounded me with a chair piled high with blue cyanotype-printed and stitched pillows, gorgeous projects hanging on the walls, and intriguing stitch products and kits on the shelves. 11 YOU KNOW YOU ARE A QUILTER WHEN: YOU NEED AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT PAIRS OF SCISSORS. Fabric shears, thread snips, paper scissors. And don t even think about mixing them up. YOU KNOW THE COMFORT OF SWEATPANTS IN THE SEWING ROOM. When you re up and down to sew, iron or cut, plus sitting at the machine for hours, nothing beats the comfort of an elasticized waistband. YOU KNOW THE DANGER OF SWEATPANTS. They re always a dark color and they attract lint like nothing else does. YOU HAVE FELT FABRIC ANXIETY. When you re cutting up long-hoarded fabric for a project and worrying that the project isn t good enough for the fabric. YOU NEED THAT ONE PARTICULAR PRINT BECAUSE IT S SUCH A UNIQUE SHADE. Ignore your significant other s inability to tell the difference between the pile of 20 yellows you ve already got stashed. We understand they re all very different! YOU SAY YES, I SEW. NO, I WON T MEND YOUR PANTS. And no, we don t follow a 1920s housewife guide. YOU HAVE A CAMERA ROLL FULL OF DESIGNS TO INSPIRE QUILTS, BUT NONE OF THEM EVER COME TO FRUITION YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THE FABRIC STASH IS FOR USING AND LOOKING AT. SAME GOES FOR YOUR RAINBOW OF THREADS. YOU KNOW THE TRUTH ABOUT MURPHY S LAW. It was originally written about the relationship between bobbins and the distance to the end of your seam. YOU KNOW THE STRESS OF SNAPPING A NEEDLE. Who needs dodgeball when the sound of a needle snapping sends you ducking to the floor faster than you can say eye safety?! YOU VE EMPTIED A ROOM. You can tell the size of a quilt by how large the room is that needs to be evacuated in order to baste it. CURVES AND THE Y MEAN SOMETHING TOTALLY DIFFERENT TO YOU. 12 THE REAL TRUTH ABOUT CRAFTING FOR CHARITY Wherever you are right now, you are fortunate. Why? Because you re reading this post from a screen of some kind, which means you probably have electricity. And most likely you ve got a warm place to sleep tonight and enough to eat for dinner. We know that not everyone is so lucky. Every few months there s some kind of terrible news story that shakes us through and through. Watching it play out on television we are heartbroken for the victims and their families and we desperately want to help. That sentiment comes from a true place, but things often go wrong from there. As someone who sews, quilts, knits or crochets, it seems like the best course of action is to start making things to send to the victims and those in need. After all, a handmade quilt, or a knitted stuffed animal, or a crocheted blanket is a warm and comforting thing of beauty that expresses our heartfelt feelings of compassion for people who are going through terrible times. The truth is, though, that direct donations of goods, especially in the wake of a disaster, can truly cause more harm than good. Boxes and bags of blankets and clothes and stuffed animals pile up on the floors of warehouses, waiting to be inspected, sorted and distributed. The flood of donations commonly creates a second crisis of sorts. Beyond the strain on already strapped volunteers, though, donating a handcrafted item is an inefficient way to help people in need. It feels good to make a stuffed animal to send to a child, but it just doesn t make sense as a way to help. A monetary donation, however small, will be immeasurably more useful in so many ways.
