1 Hurrah! Winter is really over. It s wonderful to see all the spring blossoms. Spring is my favourite season in Vancouver Executive President: Wendy L. I d like to welcome back those members who travelled to warmer climes for the winter. I also congratulate those who, like me, stayed home and suffered through the cold days of winter. 2 APRIL PROGRAM Wine Bottle Table Runner McCalls Quiting Issue May/June 2017 Designer Caroline Reardon Kathy A. and Janet C. will be helping you put together a wine bottle table runner. Please measure your table prior to the meeting to gauge the length for your runner. Bring your wine bottle fabric cut out, any additional scraps of cork and your sewing machine etc. If you did not pick up a template in March please Kathy A. Please bring your projects from the March meeting with Kerry Karram for show and tell. Kathy A. will also bring a yellow sharps container to the meeting for disposal of your old blades and needles. Quilt til You Wilt Day Monday April 29th. 8am 2pm It is at the same venue as last time the Lynn Valley United Church,.. The church is closed so we will have the whole church until 2pm. Please remember that there is parking underneath the church, and a dolly for you to bring your stuff up on. MAY MEETING If you are doing some spring cleaning in your sewing room we will be having a members only sale at the coffee break in the May meeting. APRIL MEMBERSHIP REPORT We have another happy recruit to join our ranks! Please welcome Ennua Lee to our ranks! She will be joining our April meeting so if you are able to make the meeting please drop by to say hello her! We are now at 58 members and 3 honorary members for a total 61! Membership closes at 65 so let s see if we can find a few more! 3 Both Needle and I in Burnaby and Fabricana in Richmond have announced their closures. Please support our local quilt stores. Community Quilts we will be welcoming Ruth Kershaw from shelter to home at our april meeting. NOMINATIONS FOR THE EXECUTIVE Please remember that we will be looking for a new Secretary, Programs and Workshops chair and Newsletter Editor in June. We will also need a new Community quilts co-ordinator. If you are interested in standing for one of these positions and contributing to your guild, please talk to the present executive. Wendy will be introducing this lovely block of the month quilt in June. Every block made will generate one ticket for the sewer to enter in a draw happening at the May meeting. If you make 5 blocks, you will be given 5 tickets. Happy sewing and good luck! 7 CANADIAN QUILTERS ASSOCIATION Good day to all CQA/ACC Member Guilds, Thank goodness it is almost spring. I'm sure many guilds are starting to plan for their end of year activities and even starting to work on next year's plans. Today's biannual CQA/ACC Guild Newsletter brings you a few items that may be of interest to our member guilds. Also, as we know guilds' executives change and different people become responsible for different activities, we include a few reminders of where to find resources, such as Event Calendar and ordering Guild Rosettes. We want our member guilds to receive the full benefits of their membership. 1) Quilt Canada 2019 Sponsorship Guilds received correspondence from Heather Black, CQA/ACC President, in the fall of 2018 requesting support for 2019 Quilt Canada being held in Ottawa. We want to thank the many guilds who have already sent in donations! Whether $25 or $500, all donations make a difference to your Association and allow us to provide a top notch event. If your guild has not made a donation yet, it is not too late. To make a donation toward Quilt Canada 2019, please contact our Treasurer, Judy Brown, treasurer@canadianquilter.com ; she can assist you with this. 2) Guild insurance Many of our guilds have already found the benefit of the CQA/ACC Guild Insurance Program. For those already enrolled, renewal notices will be appearing in the late summer in preparation for the renewal date in November Please ensure your guild contact information stays current in our insurance database by updating any changes with our Treasurer, Judy Brown. Judy can be reached at treasurer@canadianquilter.com For those guilds not already enrolled in our very affordable liability and property insurances, please visit for more information. 3) How Can CQA/ACC Member Guilds Help Support Our Quilt Judge Certification Program? We all know that quilters like to share their work with others and that is one of the main reasons they display their quilts at their local guild shows. Many of our member guilds order the complimentary CQA/ACC Rosette for their shows. Guilds have the option of awarding it to either the Viewers Choice quilt, selected by visitors to the show or Best in Show, selected by members of their guild. Some of our guilds award the Best in Show ribbon to a quilt selected by designated judges. gmdqg.ca Page 7

8 Has your guild ever considered holding a judged show? We often hear that quilt guilds are reluctant to have judged shows as their members do not think their work is good enough or think it puts too much pressure on them. Please consider the following as your guild considers whether to have your show judged. Judges want you to excel and grow as a quilter Judges provide feedback to help you become a better quilter Perhaps knowing your quilt is going to be judged will make you a better quilter as you strive to perfect your workmanship? As Cindy Seits-Krug explained in her blog, Who s Afraid of the Big, Bad.Quilt Judge ( as a way to encourage her guild to go with a judged quilt show - Think of it this way, if your child or grandchild said they didn t want to play a game because they were going to lose anyway, wouldn t you tell them that winning wasn t everything. You just have to get out there and do your best whether you win or lose! Quit Judge Certification Program (QJCP) and Judged Shows You may ask why we are bringing up judged shows and the relation to the CQA/ACC QJCP, and what does this have to do with our guild? We are looking for your help. Basically, our apprentice judges are required to judge a certain quantity of quilts before they can take the final certification exam. It is often hard for them to find quilt shows to judge. The QJCP students have already put in 2 to 3 years (or more) of their time and they have to complete this last step before they can take the practical exam. This is where your guild can help - by asking one of the apprentice judges to come to your show and judge quilts, your guild is giving them the opportunity to finish their requirements for the QJCP in a timely manner. Your guild could then present the CQA/ACC Rosette to the Best in Show quilt that has been selected by a CQA/ACC Apprentice Judge. The list of apprentice and certified judges is maintained on the CQA/ACC website. You can pick an apprentice from the list to contact and offer them an opportunity to judge at your show. At the moment there is only one apprentice listed, however after Quilt Canada 2020 we expect many more apprentices to be available. If you would like more general information about the QJCP, please visit our website. 5) 2020 Guild Rosette Invitational - Quilts winning a CQA/ACC Rosette at a member guild show in 2018 and 2019 are eligible to enter the 2020 CQA/ACC Guild Rosette Invitational in Edmonton. Quilts from 2018 that have already been displayed at the 2019 Quilt Canada in Ottawa are not eligible to enter a second time. Entry is limited to the first 25 eligible quilts due to space constraints. Information will be posted on our gmdqg.ca Page 8

9 website later this year, with entries being accepted in January 2020 for the June 2020 Quilt Canada. We will put notices in the monthly e-newsletter and in social media when the information and entry forms are posted. Please ensure that the winner of the guild rosette has their information and picture sent to us for the website prior to January 1, 2020 in order to be eligible to enter. The submission information will be sent with the that confirms your request for a rosette. 6) Member Guild Challenge "Gateway to Adventure" The 2019 Member Guild Challenge has proved very popular with our guilds. We wanted to give our guilds a heads up that we will be doing a Member Guild Challenge for Quilt Canada The title of the conference and this challenge will be Gateway to Adventure. The details of the 2020 challenge will be shared in upcoming member e-newsletters (May & June) and on our website. We are hoping to have more guilds participate in 2020 and hope that Guild Executives will consider putting it on their Guild year activities calendars. That's it for now. Sincerely, Carole McCarville CQA/ACC Executive Director AUDREY s Make Ahead Bran Muffins. 2 eggs, well beaten 1 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup cooking oil 2 cups bran 2 cups milk 2 cups flour 2 tsp. Baking powder 2 tsp. Baking soda 1 tsp. salt Add bran to milk, let sit. Beat eggs and sugar, add rest of ingredients including bran and milk. Add 1 cup raisins. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. Batter can be stored in fridge and baked fresh as desired. Mixture will keep in fridge a week or more. Enjoy. gmdqg.ca Page 9
