1 Hello ladies, Thanks to those of you who participated in the comfort quilt program last month. I know many of you are working at home on community quilts and we all look forward to seeing them at show and tell Executive President: Joy Brown Plans for the 2017 quilt show are progressing well. We will have more information in the following months and we are hoping to have everything and everyone in place before we break for the summer. The raffle quilt will be made during the summer assuming we get the final batik blocks in June. Exciting! 2 Programs - Margaret This month we welcome Catherine Nicholls who will give a presentation on the British Quilt Show and will also show some of her own beautiful work. Her workshop, Forest Landscape, will follow on Saturday, 19, at St. Martin's, from 10:30-4:30. The class could take one or two more people, so if you have a last minute desire to attend, the cost is $40 and I have the supply list. Karen Johnson is our April presenter with a trunk show. Her first workshop, Textured Backgrounds, will take place Saturday, April 2nd, at the Capilano Library Potlatch Room., from 10:30-4:30. There are a couple of spaces left to sign up and the fee is $40. Her second workshop, Working in a Series, will take place on Sunday, May 29, at the Capilano Library Potlatch Room, from 10:30-4:30. There are several spaces left in this class and the fee is $40. I will have supply lists at the meeting for these workshops. At the May meeting, Wei Hin Ng of Euro Tech is coming to talk to us about care and maintenance of our sewing machines. His talk includes a PowerPoint presentation, and he will answer any questions you can think of to bring. The UFO list will be waiting for anyone ready to check off completed projects. June is coming up fast, better get busy! Also for June, how are your challenge quilts coming along?? See you all at the meeting! Quilt Canada Everyone is welcome to attend Quilt Canada, held at The International Centre in Toronto, Ontario in June. View over 400 of Canada s finest quilts, shop at Quilt Canada s largest Merchant Mall and participate in workshops and lectures which feature leading quilt educators from Canada and the US. Quilt Canada runs from June 15 to 18, 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, Wednesday to Friday and 9:30 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday. Tickets to attend are available at the door: $18.00 per day or $55.00 for a multi-day pass. Children ages six to twelve are $8.00. Lecture costs vary from $15.00 to $35.00; advanced registration is advised. Workshops are available for one- or two-day sessions at a variety of skill-levels and costs; advanced registration is advised. Along with an exceptional array of workshops and lectures, a large Merchant Mall and a number of invitational quilt exhibitons, the National Juried Show is the crown jewel of Quilt Canada. Quilts featured in the show are Canada s best; they represent the most current designs and innovation in quilting. My granddaughter Cassidy Kellow made a softball quilt for the challenge using one of her Jersey's as inspiration. If you have sponsored a Youth Congrats. However, if you haven't please consider doing so next year. It is very rewarding to see them proud of their accomplishments. 5 WHITE ROCK RETREAT - Ocean Promenade Hotel, Again ~ a fun time was had by all! As our dates were somewhat earlier in the year than usual, our group was smaller myself, Catriona, Joy, Susan, Mona, Elaine, Anna, Wendy (her first WR retreat) and Cherie Furlong, former long-time guild member and now resident of White Rock. We designed, pieced, sewed, sandwiched, basted, quilted, reverse-sewed (yes, even Joy), commiserated, laughed, joked, ate and had a few beverages over the three days whoa there! coffees & teas as well! Dinners were at the Greek restaurant, Moby Dick s for fish n chips and the Keg for Sunday dinner two stayed behind to watch the Oscars! Mona brought her famous cookies, Wendy introduced us to her Ikea cookies and cinnamon buns, there was chocolate from Susan and Joy for happy hour. Catriona shared her cheese and olive squares and scoops for her delicious dip. We were thrilled to hear of Anna s many recent travels, so much so she and her husband, Dave, gave a photo presentation on Sunday afternoon ~ so many amazing adventures and the pictures are beautiful. All in all we had a great time on a very productive quilting weekend - wish you too could experience retreat at White Rock. The next retreat is scheduled for November 18 th to 21 st,. 6 Knitted Knockers - Sharon It seems to me that this falls into the category of learning something new each day. While golfing with Calgary friends down here in Ramona, one of the women mentioned that she was knitting knockers and I was completely dumb-founded! It turns out there is quite a community of knitters who knit knockers for women who have had mastectomies. Apparently they find these ones lighter and cooler than the commercial ones. Maybe I am behind the times and everyone else knows about this trend, but I thought I would share it with you anyways. So below there is a link to the Calgary group and also a link to a YouTube video from the states that demonstrates their production. I haven t decided if I will try to knit some or not I used to knit a lot but not so much lately. But it seems the Calgary group is always looking for more. 7 Quilt Fever Blue Mountain Quilters Guild October 22-23, GMDQG SHOW June 9, 2017 set-up June 10, 2017 show date! Around the World Quilt Project Quilting is no longer a land-based activity. Here is an article about Anna Smith s latest adventures aboard the Oceania. More info and pictures are at the website oceaniacruisesblog.com. Around The World Quilt Project was launched on Insignia January 31,, and there was a quilting buzz aboard ship! At the beginning of the Oceania Insignia World Cruise, Around the World Hostess Tricia Blake announced the beginning of the Around the World (ATW) Quilt project. Exotic fabric collector, textile artist and professional quilter Anna Smith will provide creative input and inspiration for guests while this quilting masterpiece is created during the 180 day World Voyage ending in Miami on July 1,. Anna Smith provides quilt making instruction for beginners and guides the ATW Quilt team during its formative stages. Anna has contributed fabrics from her recent visit to west African countries and guests are looking forward to fabric shopping in upcoming ports of call. Anna recently discussed and displayed her recent colorful African fabric purchases to a standing room only crowd in the Insignia Artist Loft. Insignia guests have already embraced this creative project with enthusiasm and have started assembling quilt blocks for the bedspread size master quilt. This quilt will include 64 8-inch blocks representing destinations visited by the ship. Guests meet during days at sea to share ideas, designs and plan future quilt blocks. New friendships are being made and guests are helping one another with new ideas and fabric pieces to make this a very social and fun quilting project for both beginners and enthusiasts. The quilt theme will be the Oceania Insignia 180 day Trip Around the World cruise with a global map in the center which will be affixed with beautiful beads for each port visited. The quilt will include photo transfer, embroidery, fabric pieces, drawing and a variety of quilting techniques. Guests are selecting what destinations they want to feature in their blocks with production underway. All participants will have their name included on a label that Anna will photo transfer and attach to the back of the quilt. Prior to her return to Insignia later in the World cruise, Anna will be in contact with the ATW Quilt team to provide assistance and to receive photos of the blocks to facilitate its final assembly. Anna looks forward to her return to the Insignia with sewing machine when ATW guests will put all the blocks gmdqg.ca Page 7

8 together for Anna to complete borders and assemble the layers of the ATW quilt with everyone sharing in hand sewing the binding around the quilt. At the end of the Around the World cruise, the ATW quilt will be raffled off with proceeds going to a charitable cause. Anna Smith resides in West Vancouver, BC where she instructs fabric arts, quilting and photo transfer classes at art galleries and quilting guilds. She has served as a fabric Artist in Residence on the Insignia, Marina and Riviera ships and has lectured on exotic fabrics of the world on cruise ships worldwide. Her works have been exhibited in art galleries, offices, stores and museums. Her husband David Smith is a frequent cruise ship guest lecturer and workshop leader on travel photography. Hopefully it stops soon as we have to go out and it is hard to drive in. Anyways, in proofreading this newsletter, I clicked on the CQA link to Pinterest (found in the CQA article earlier in this newsletter) and was down the rabbit hole for a good ½ hour! There is a ton of stuff to see there and many categories to choose from. You don t need to be signed on to Pinterest to go there and take a look. You probably need to be signed up if you want to Pin something. I am actually signed up and do use it a bit not a lot. Anyways, if you need inspiration it is well worth a look.
