1 A U G U S T the Braided River Quilt Guild From the President Welcome back! to another year at Braided River. I Love fall and the sense of renewal a new year brings. So, let s sharpen our new #2 pencils and get to work. Your board has been doing their homework all summer in preparation for September. There s a wide assortment of speakers and programs -- some will be familiar to you, while others are new faces. Sign up early for the spring classes -- they ll fill up quickly! Check out the committee reports in the newsletter for the latest on everything from Angel Quilts to U.F.O.s -- thanks to everyone who s pulled it all together for another great BRQ year -- our 18th year! While officially starting at 7 pm, the doors will open at 6, providing you ample opportunity to visit, chat, and take care of any business needed well before the opening bell. I will strive to present efficient meetings so we can all depart at a reasonable hour -- please assist by helping straighten up the room before leaving. (No erasers to clean, I promise!) As we learned in kindergarten, remember to bring your thoughtfulness and consideration to our meetings, allowing speakers to talk without the distraction of murmurs among the audience, and giving show and tell presenters the attention we all want when sharing our own projects. Welcome our newest members and let s show them how friendly we are. The first day is always tough, but by the end of the year, new friends abound. A few more volunteers are sought after -- won t you give a bit of yourself to your guild? Please remember the Board is here to keep things running smoothly, and you are welcome to contact any of us with your concerns or ideas. Enjoy the rest of summer vacation, and see you Tuesday, Aug 27th! Deb Miner Addendum -- Do you know of a store that gives discounts to quilt guild members? Please send the info to me and we ll put it on the website so we all can benefit! The same for quilt shows or events -- we ll post that online as well. Angel Quilts Members of our guild make small quilts to be presented to women who lose their baby either from a miscarriage or other type of death. Often these quilts are used for a memory box. When the quilts are finished they are brought to the meeting and labels are stitched on that say "Budded on Earth to bloom in heaven". The small quilts are brought to the hospital and nurses present them to the patients. Included with the quilt is a card that tells where the quilt comes from and a description of our guild. These quilts are made with appropriate fabric and designs. Some ladies like to applique, some like to make an angel in the block but the choice is an individual preference. --Gretchen Reid

There is going to be a members only secure section of the website established. Please keep this information secure. Also available -- the Sew and Tell form - save yourself a few minutes and print it and fill it out ahead of the meeting. Forms are available online for you to print and fill in in advance, or pick one up at the membership table when you sign in. Put a quarter in the kitty for your ticket. -- Jackie Thorstad & April Bluvas Country Store The Country Store will begin again at the Aug meeting. Many quilting books, magazines, patterns, kits, fabrics, notions and more will be available for you to purchase each meeting throughout the year. We encourage and welcome your donations of slightly used quilting items. They are taken anytime at meetings or by calling and dropping off at our homes (Barb Bledsoe & Barb Kliewer). Your Country Store staff is here to have fun and encourage your quilting addiction (oh, I meant hobby). Funds go directly each month to our Braided River organization. Thank you for all your help and participation in making this a successful part of Braided River Quilt Guild. There are currently 14 people on the waiting list and they will be contacted to let them know that they can attend two meetings in a year's time without being members, to try us out. Also, that they can go to UFO on Mondays without being a member. Look for handouts at the membership table when you sign in - changes are percolating. -- Donna Kempkes and Tammy MacGill Library The Library has turned a page. This year the catalog will go on the web! There will be a contest this fall with prizes for contestants racing for answers to the library quiz! Books will be brought in each month with the goal of supporting guild projects. We have plans to expand the library. This is a new chapter for BRQ and you will learn more at the August meeting. -- Susan Condrey 2

3 UFO Group --Julie Strnad Unusually Friendly Obsessive small quilt group invites you to join the fun and meet more quilters. If you are a Braided River member, or on our guild waiting list, you can join. We re an open group. You do not need an invitation to join us. The UFO group meets on Monday at the same Lutheran Church the guild meets: Trinity Lutheran Church, 330 W Halleck St. in Papillion. We start at 9:30 AM and leave by 3:00 PM. You may come or leave anytime in between as this is not a formal group. The group eats at 11:30 A.M. You may bring your own lunch or go out and buy one and return to eat with the group. There is a $2.00 donation for the church each Monday per person. The only time we do not meet is when the church has a funeral service or VBS. If that happens you will get an from either Julie Strnad (julie2066@cox.net) or Gerry Cordes (ggcordes@cox.net). Please contact one of us if needed. Do not call the church. Thank You. Currently, the only date we do NOT plan to meet is Labor Day, September 2 nd. There is plenty of space for you, your machine and project. We have an ironing board and iron available. We would love to have you. 4 Small Group Challenge My Fabric Your Blocks -- Dwynette Valenti This challenge uses your own fabric, but your small group s members designs to make a dozen blocks that you can set any way you d like. (Suggestions will be made in the spring.) How it works... Sign up BEFORE the September meeting. Call or me if you d like to participate but cannot attend the August meeting. 1. Each participant will provide a bag of their fabric choices at the September meeting, with their name clearly on the bag. Groups will be determined by drawing names, and a group mom designated to serve as coordinator. These small groups will meet before the BRQ meeting each month, and/or additional times, if desired. 2. Each participant will select 2 different blocks (pattern suggestions provided in Sept.) as her blocks and will be responsible for making each of those blocks for every person in their group, including themselves...a total of 12 blocks over the course of 6 months. 3. Each month, members will take home someone else's bag and make their two blocks out of the fabric in the bag, returning the bag the following meeting. ***The person who owns the bag is not to see the contents of the bag until the reveal in March!!! Participants will make blocks for the Months of October, November, December (their own two blocks, so no passing of bags is necessary -- be sure and save some of your fabric out for yourself at home!), January, February, and March. All blocks should be completed by the March meeting. She will then have two whole months to assemble her quilt as desired and bring to Show and Tell at the May meeting. Quilt Retreat Join us March 10 to 13, 2014 at the St. Benedict Retreat Center outside of Schuyler, Nebraska. We will have information on this beautiful location at the August meeting with sign up available. Hold your reservation with a $30.00 deposit.
