1 Virginia Cavaliers 2018 field hockey Quick Look at the Hoos The Cavaliers are a young team with 10 newcomers on the roster, including nine freshmen The Cavaliers have four goalies on the roster, including a pair of veterans. Fifth-year senior Carrera Lucas started every game in goal last year for the Cavaliers, with a 1.75 goals-against average Sophomore goalie Lauren Hausheer made eight appearances last year, allowing just one goal with 19 saves in 175 minutes for a.950 save percentage The Cavalier offense returns eight of its top-10 goal scorers from last season. Senior Greta Ell is the top returner with 13 goals last season, followed by juniors Anzel Viljoen with six and Erin Shanahan with five goals. Shanahan was also second on the team in assists with eight The Cavaliers are the defending 2017 ACC regular-season champions Top-Ranked Offense The Cavaliers were one of the mostpotent offenses in the nation during the 2017 season The Cavaliers finished the year ranked first in goals per game (4.40) and second in points (12.15) and penalty corners per game (9.40) while ranking third in scoring margin (+2.75) and assists per game (3.35) UVA led the nation in goals, points, and penalty corners per game as well as scoring average and scoring margin through the first six weeks of the season (Oct. 3) UVA led the ACC all season in goals, points, and penalty corners per game as well as scoring average and scoring margin Top-10 match-ups The Cavaliers played in seven top-10 showdowns last season, going 4-3, picking up victories over then-no. 1 Duke, No. 7 Syracuse, No. 7 Louisville and No 8. Boston College, but falling to then-no. 7 Penn State and twice to North Carolina (ranked No. 6 and No. 7) Team captains Senior Greta Ell and sophomore Rachel Robinson are this year s team captains Sister act Senior Izzy McDonough and freshman Annie McDonough are sisters playing for the Cavaliers. The two played on the same team for one year at Unionville High School. Annie s twin sister, Maddie, is playing field hockey at Michigan State Two other players on the current roster have sisters who are alumnae of the program: Catesby Willis (sister, Phoebe 12) and Rachel Robinson (sister, Katie 13) THIS WEEK The Cavaliers open the 2018 season on Friday, Aug. 24 at Drexel UVA is 3-0 all-time against the Dragons The two teams met on Oct 8 of last year with UVA picking up an 8-0 victory in Charlottesville The Cavaliers and Dragons opened the 2015 season by facing one another in Charlottesville. UVA won that game 6-0 The Cavaliers close out the weekend with a top-10 match-up at Penn State on Sunday, Aug. 26 Penn State holds a 17-8 advantage in the series and has won the last two match-ups The Cavaliers and Nittany Lions have played one another in the opening weekend of the season in 11 of the last 12 years. Lucas was a goalkeeper for the US Women s National Development Squad, competing in a four-game test series against Chile s Women s National Team and U19 Junior National Team in May in Santiago, Chile Junior Erin Shanahan is also a member of the US Women s Development Squad. Shanahan was a member of the USA Women s Indoor U19 National Team and earned an invitation to last year s U21 Junior National Camp. Freshman Greer Gill is a member of the US U-21 Junior National Team. Has been a member of the US U19 Junior National Team for the last two years, competing with the squad in Germany in 2017 and Ireland this year Sophomores Lauren Hausheer and Makayla Gallen have been offered a trial for the U21 team at the conclusion of the 2018 collegiate season Annie McDonough is a member of the US Women s National Indoor Team and competed at the 2018 Women s National World Cup in Berlin, Germany in February. The veteran of international competition has also been a member of the USA U17 and U19 indoor junior national teams and is a current member of the US U19 squad after playing on the U17 team in 2016 Freshmen Peyton Tollaksen and Grace Wallis are on the US U19 roster alongside Greer Gill and Annie McDonough Freshman Amber Ezechiels is a member of the Dutch U19 Junior National Team Freshman Lizzy Shim and Taylor Henriksen are members of the US U19 Indoor Team Virginia coaching staff Virginia head coach Michele Madison is in her 13th season at Virginia and her 30th overall as a head coach Named the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year, her first time winning the honor. She is the second UVA Coach to earn the award, joining Missy Sanders (1997) Madison is one of only two active Division I head coaches to be a part of two United States Olympic staffs, having worked as a manager with the 1988 Olympic Team in Seoul and served as the head goalkeeper coach with the 1996 squad in Atlanta. Madison is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame Assistant coach Ole Keusgen is in his third season at Virginia. Keusgen is also be one of the coaches leading U.S.A. She was a two-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year and a four-time First Team All-American. She was the Virginia athletic department s female athlete of the year last year Tara joined her sister, Michelle, in the starting lineup for the US Women s National Team in all three games the squad played in the 2018 World Cup. Sister, Carissa, is also a member of the USWNT but was not on the roster for the World Cup Michelle played for the Cavaliers from and in Carissa was with the team from Tara played from
