The game will be held at Fetzer Field and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. ESPN 3 Friday s Quarterfinal game can be streamed on ESPN3 and can be accessed at Providence in the Big Dance Providence is making its ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament. It is also the third time in the last four seasons that Providence has been selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament. The Friars quarterfinal appearance is the second in program history. NCAA All-Time Record Providence is all-time in NCAA Tournament games. The Friars are under Craig Stewart. Friars in the Quarterfinals The Friars are 1-0 in Quarterfinal games and 1-0 under Head Coach Craig Stewart. In 2014, Providence defeated Michigan State, 3-2, in East Lansing, Mich. Taking on the Tar Heels Providence and North Carolina have met only one time in program in history. The Tar Heels defeated the Friars in 2005 in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament, 2-0. North Carolina defeated Clemson, 1-0 on Sept. 9 Recapping the NCAA Third Round Victory The Friars defeated the Creighton Bluejays for the second time in 2016, both times in Omaha, Neb. Creighton took the lead, 1-0, early when Joel Rydstrand rifled off a quick shot from the box in the ninth minute. Providence responded 11 minutes later when Brendan Constantine worked around the Creighton defense in the right corner of the field and fed Julian Gressel, open in the middle of the box. Gressel settled the ball and shot to the far side of the net. Danny Griffin put away his sixth game-winner of his rookie season in the 83rd minute to lift the Friars to their second Quarterfinal appearance in three seasons. Liam Wilson sent a long ball to Gressel deep in Creighton territory and then dropped it to Griffin, who fired a hard shot that Creighton s Alex Kapp barely got his fingertips on but was unable to stop. Colin Miller made a career-high nine saves in the match. Friars Ranking Nationally Julian Gressel is tied for fourth in the Nation in total goals (15) and ranks fifth for total points (36). Colin Miller also ranks fifth in the nation, for save percentage (0.849). Gressel Julian Gressel leads the Friars with 36 points on 15 goals and six assists. The senior captain has registered at least one goal in each 2016 NCAA game the Friars have played in, including a two-goal performance against No. 1 seed Maryland in the Second Round. The senior captain has recorded five game-winning goals, including the goal that lifted the Friars past St. John s, 1-0, on Nov. 3 to give the team their first regular season title. Gressel was named BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year, as he scored 16 points during BIG EAST regular-season play on six goals and four assists. Gressel boasts 86 career points in his four seasons at Providence. In 83 games played, Gressel ranks second all-time at Providence in goals scored (30) and second in assists (26). A Hermann Trophy Semifinalist On Nov. 29, Gressel was announced a 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist. Gressel is among 15 Division I men s soccer players to have been selected. Miller in Goal Colin Miller holds an 15-1 record in his debut season. The red shirt-sophomore was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week one time (Nov. 7) and Co-Goalkeeper of the Year (Nov. 5).

3 In his 14 games played, Miller has allowed just 10 goals. He has registered eight shutouts, including one shutout in NCAA Tournament play (Nov. 17 vs. Delaware, 2-0). Griffin Danny Griffin has tallied seven goals in his rookie season and one assist, for 15 points. Six of Griffin s seven goals have been game-winning tallies. Griffin is the first Friar to register 15 points in his rookie season since Marcos Ugarte in Griffin s seven goals is a rookie best at Providence. BIG EAST Award Winners Providence claimed three major BIG EAST Awards. Gressel was named Co-Offensive Player of the Year, Colin Miller was named Co-Goalkeeper of the Year and Craig Stewart and his staff were named Coaching Staff of the Year. Along with Gressel and Miller, Mark Jecewiz was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Liam Wilson, Joao Serrano and Danny Griffin all earned spots on the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team. The last time Providence had six All-BIG EAST selections was in 2014, with five Second Team honorees and one All-Freshman Team selection. Youthful Look Providence s starting lineup consists of eight underclassmen, including four sophomores and four freshmen. Five freshmen have seen the pitch in 2016 and all five have contributed on the score-sheet with at least one goal. Danny Griffin has scored six times and five of his six goals have been game-winning tallies. Braden Kline scored in his first minute of collegiate play on Sept. 2. Joao Serrano, Alex DaCosta and Liam Wilson have also found the back of the net once this season. A Game of Firsts In the NCAA Second Round game Providence scored five goals for the first time in since Aug. 29, 2003 in a 6-1 win over Sacred Heart. Against No. 1 Maryland, the game-tying and game-winning goals were scored by freshman. Steven Kilday and Joao Serrano tallied their first collegiate goals in the game and Nick Sailor s goal was his first of the 2016 season. By Unanimous Selection With the Friars six All-BIG EAST Selections, three were selected unanimously. Gressel s selection to the First Team and Joao Serrano and Danny Griffin s selection to the All-Freshman Team were unanimous. The Coaching Staff was also selected unanimously. In the Polls Providence made their NSCAA Poll debut in Week 10 (Oct. 31) after defeating then-no. 18 Creighton, 1-0, in Omaha, Neb. The Friars moved up three spots in Week 11 (Nov. 8) to No. 22. In the Week 12 (Nov. 15) poll, the Friars received 26 votes. Providence won eight-consecutive matches, including seven-straight BIG EAST games to capture the regular season title. Regular Season Champions For the first time in program history, the Friars claimed the BIG EAST Regular Season Title. Providence tied a program record of seven conference wins (2006). Weekly Honors Three Friars have received multiple BIG EAST Weekly Honors in Griffin was selected Freshman of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against Georgia State in the R.I. Captial City Classic. Miller was named Goalkeeper of the Week on Nov. 7 after posting his seventh shutout and lead the Friars to their first BIG EAST Regular Season title. Gressel has been named Offensive Player of the Week three times (Aug. 29, Oct. 10, Oct. 31). Gressel has also been named to the Weekly Honor Roll three times, while Miller and Griffin have each been named once. Injuries Preseason All-BIG EAST selection Dominik Machado and Preseason BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year Mac Steeves have missed the 2016 season due to injuries. Tiago Mendonca and Klisman Sousa have also sustained injuries. All four are expected to return in Scouting the Tar Heels The Tar Heels received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament and a First Round Bye, drawing a No. 9 seed. The Tar Heels hosted Florida Gulf Coast in the Second Round and defeated the Gulls, 3-2, in the second overtime. On Nov. 27, North Carolina upset No. 8 seed Syracuse, 1-0. North Carolina holds a overall record and 9-3 home record. All three of the Tar Heel s losses came at Fetzer Field. The Tar Heels have outscored their opponents this season, averaging 1.95 goals per game. North Carolina has claimed 11 clean sheets in 2016 and have been shut out five times. Five other Tar Heels have recored more than one goal on the season. James Pyle has seen 1778:22 minutes of action in 2016, making 38 saves for a.792 save percentage and holds a.51 goals against average. Cam Lindey was named ACC Freshman of the Year, with seven assists. Lindey was also the lone Tar Heel to be named to the ACC First Team. NCAA First Round All-Time The Friars are in First Round games. Providence advanced in penalty kicks at the University of Pennsylvania in Stewart is in First Round games, advancing in the tie and securing a bye in Friars in the NCAA Gressel leads the team in scoring during the NCAA Tournament with nine points on four goals and one assist.
