The Mavericks enter this week with a overall record and a 2-2 record in MIAA action. The team has scored as many goals in the last two games as they have in the previous four, while giving up just three goals against. Mavericks 2-2 in Conference Play The Mavericks opened Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association action on Sept. 9 with a 2-0 shutout of Missouri Western at UNO Soccer Field. Since the victory in the conference opener, the Mavericks have dropped two out of three in the MIAA. Facing back-to-back conference road games this week, the team is looking to get above.500 in the MIAA. Conference leader Truman State University sits atop the MIAA, with a record against their competition. UNO, at in conference play, is currently fourth but will have a chance to gain ground on third-ranked Missouri Southern (2-0-1 MIAA) this weekend in Joplin, Mo. The Series The Mavericks have a series advantage against Southwest Baptist. UNO has won or tied in all seven meetings between the two schools. The Mavs defeated the Bearcats 3-0 at UNO Soccer Field on Oct. 1, 2009, then tied them in Bolivar, Mo., 1-1 on Nov. 5, The Mavs are a perfect all-time against Missouri Southern University. The Mavericks swept the series last year, defeating MSU 2-0 in Joplin, Mo. on Sept. 19 and again at the UNO Soccer Field 1-0 on Oct. 29, UNO has outscored MSU 26-2 in the ten meetings between the two schools. Scouting The Bearcats and Lions This season, the Bearcats currently hold a overall record and are in MIAA play. The team s last two games were a narrow 1-0 loss against MIAA No. 1 Truman, and a 0-0 tie at Missouri Western State University. Ashley Creason leads SBU with three goals, and Brittany Ready has dished out a teamhigh three assists for the Bearcats. Missouri Southern has played in two overtime games already this season, and has won two of its last three games overall. Currently No. 4 in the MIAA, the Lions are in the conference and played to a 0-0 2OT tie against MIAA No. 1 Truman State last week in Jolin, Mo. MSU has given up a total of only six goals on the season thus far. The Coaches Head coach Don Klosterman is in his 12th season at the helm of the Maverick women s soccer team. He has compiled a overall record as the only soccer coach in UNO history. Under the direction of Klosterman, UNO has advanced to eight-straight NCAA Tournament appearances ( ). In those appearances, Klosterman guided the Mavericks to at least the quarterfinals in six straight seasons ( ), and led the team to a 2005 National Championship. During his tenure, he has earned the National Coach of the Year honors two times (2002, 2005). Southwest Baptist is led by first year head coach Rob Podeyn. He took NAIA Northwood from a #212 national ranking and 3-12 conference record to a #34 national rank and two consecutive conference championships. Missouri Southern is coached by Alese Woodard. Also in her first year, Woodard was a former goalkeeper for the Lions and has her team off to a start in UNO s Four Aces University of Nebraska transfer Bri Exstrom is now tied with Becca Swanson, Monica Bosiljevac and Megan Kingston with two goals apiece. Exstrom scored a pair of goals against Missouri Western to give the Mavericks a 2-0 victory, and Swanson scored a pair against Washburn in a 4-0 home win. Bosiljevac and Kingston have been busy as of late, each scoring two goals in the last two games. Exstrom and Kingston are tied for the team lead in points with five. What s On Tap? The Mavericks will be back home for MIAA action on Sept. 30, when they host Northwest Missouri State at 4 p.m. and Emporia State on Oct. 7, at 4 p.m. The Mavericks will continue conference play for the remainder of the season. 3 Don Klosterman Head Coach 12th Season Don Klosterman has set the absolute standard for how to build a women s soccer program from scratch. As the only head coach the University of Nebraska at Omaha has had, Klosterman brings a record into his and the program s 12th season. The two-time national coach of the year has led the Mavericks to the national semifinal four times, culminating with the 2005 NCAA Division II national championship. Klosterman led the Mavericks to a record last year and an mark in their second year as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association. The St. Louis, Mo., native has guided the Mavericks to six titles in the former North Central Conference and eight national tournament appearances, finishing first, second and third twice. In fact, UNO has advanced to at least the NCAA II quarterfinal in six of the last eight seasons. He has coached nine NSCAA All-Americans, one ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, and one NCC Female scholar-athlete of the year. Klosterman was chosen as UNO s first women s soccer coach in 1998, a year before the team played its first game, after coaching men s soccer for 20 years in high school and college. The Mavericks went 14-5 in their first season and finished third in the North Central Conference. Two straight 16-5 seasons followed in which the Mavericks won a pair of league championships, but the breakthrough year for UNO soccer came in The Mavericks won 22 straight matches that year, won their third straight NCC title and advanced to the NCAA Division II championship game. The 2-1 loss in the final to Christian Brothers was the only blemish on the season, and Klosterman won the first of his two National Soccer Coaches Association coach of the year honors. The Mavericks advanced to the next two semifinal matches, finishing third each year before finally reaching the pinnacle in 2005 when they became the first national collegiate soccer champions from the state of Nebraska. Brandie Beale scored in overtime to defeat Seattle Pacific, 2-1. After an opening-game loss in 2005, UNO reeled off 13 straight wins before absorbing its second and final loss of the season. The Mavs yielded just three goals in winning their final seven matches. UNO trailed in each of its final two matches, but came back to down Franklin Pierce, 2-1, in the semifinal in regulation to reach the final. Under Klosterman, the Mavericks are in NCAA II tournament play and while playing in the former NCC. The Mavericks have excelled in the classroom as well as on the field placing 19 players on the MIAA s all-academic team in Klosterman is a graduate of Christian Brothers High School in St. Louis. He went on to earn his bachelor s degree from Benedictine College (Kan.) in 1974 and his master s in physical education from UNO in He began his coaching career as the junior varsity coach at Omaha s Creighton Prep High School, serving from During that period, he became the first Olympic Development Program coach in Nebraska. He also taught in the Omaha Public School system and was a physical education instructor and athletic director at Christ the King elementary school in Omaha. He was named the head men s soccer coach at Benedictine in 1979 and served until 1983 when he became the first director of the Olympic Development Program in Kansas. Klosterman was named the head men s soccer coach at Creighton in Omaha in 1984 and led the Bluejays to a three-year mark of He also was a physical education instructor and served as the director of the Nebraska Special Olympics. During that period, he founded the Klosterman Soccer Camps, Inc., hosting numerous coaching clinics and youth instructional camps and is still the director of camps and clinics. Klosterman, after leaving Creighton, became the boys head soccer coach at Millard South High School in 1987 and led the team to seven state tournament appearances, including a runner-up finish in 1998, during his 10 years at the school. He was also the chairperson for the physical education department at the school, coached club soccer and was the Olympic Development Program coach for under-14 girls and under-16 boys. Klosterman holds a United States Soccer Federation A License and an NSCAA Advanced National License.
