PROVIDENCE FIELD HOCKEY RETURNS TO BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THIRD-STRAIGHT YEAR... The Providence College field hockey team is making its third-consecutive appearance at the BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship. It marks the longest string of consecutive appearances at the field hockey championship for Providence, since making three straight trips during the 1996, 1997 and 1998 campaigns. PROVIDENCE ENTERS TOURNAMENT AS NO. 4 SEED... The Providence field hockey team enters the BIG EAST Championship as the No. 4 seed with a 3-3 record in regular-season league play. The three teams atop the standings all finished league play with identical 5-1 records, and share the BIG EAST Regular-Season title. Syracuse earns the No. 1 seed by virtue of tie-breaking procedures and will be the Friars semifinal round opponent at 11:00 a.m. on November 8. Second seeded Louisville and No. 3 seed, Connecticut, will compete in the second semifinal. The winner of each semifinal game will advance to the championship game on November 9 and will play for the leagues automatic berth to the NCAA Championship. WILL THE THIRD TIME BE A CHARM?... The Friars have advanced to the BIG EAST Championship Game each of the last two seasons. In 2006, the Friars fell to Connecticut, 4-3, in Louisville, Ky. Last season, Providence suffered another one-goal loss to the Huskies (1-0) in Syracuse, N.Y. Each of those games were decided in the final three minutes of regulation. In the 2006 title game, UConn s Lizzy Peijs converted a penalty stroke opportunity with 39 seconds left in the game to earn the win. A year ago, Lindsey Leck tallied the game-winner with 2:50 remaining in regulation. FRIARS VS. THE TOURNAMENT FIELD... The Friars were 0-3 this season vs. teams in the 2008 BIG EAST Tournament field. Providence fell to then-no. 2 Syracuse, 4-2, on September 26 in Providence, R.I. On September 19, the Friars dropped a 2-1, overtime, game to then-no. 4 Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., and then-no. 11 Louisville defeated Providence, 4-1, in Providence, R.I. on October 18. GETTING OFFENSIVE... The Friars have scored 49 goals this season through 20 games. If Providence gets on the scoreboard for one more goal this season, it will eclipse the 50-goal plateau in a single-season for just the 11th time in the program s 33-year history. The Friars have scored 50+ goals in each of the last two seasons as well - netting 51 in 2007 and 55 in EXTRA, EXTRA... The Friars are 2-1 this season in overtime contests. Each of Providence s three overtime games have come against a nationally-ranked opponent. The Friars only loss in overtime came against then-no. 4 Connecticut (2-1, OT) on September 19. Since then, the Friars have won overtime games against then-no. 13 Boston College (2-1, 2OT) on October 1 and then-no. 17 Massachusetts (3-2, OT) on November 1. ODD MAN OUT... The Friars are the only team in the BIG EAST Conference Field Hockey Championship that is not ranked in the latest STX/NFHCA Division I Coaches Poll. The Friars lead the list of institutions in the also receiving votes category with 70 points. Syracuse is the top-ranked team in the championship at No. 3. NELLIE POULIN S 16 GOALS THIS SEASON ARE MOST BY A FRIAR SINCE Junior forward Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) has recorded 16 goals this season. It marks the most goals scored by a Friar in a single-season since Karen Krawchuk recorded 24 goals during the 1989 campaign. NELLIE POULIN SCORES AT LEAST ONE GOAL IN FIVE OF SIX BIG EAST CONFERENCE GAMES... Junior forward Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) scored at least one goal in five of the Friars six BIG EAST regular-season games this season. The only league opponent to hold her scoreless was Connecticut. Poulin recorded three goals against Georgetown, two goals against Syracuse and one goal against Villanova, Rutgers and Louisville. Poulin finished the regular-season tied for third in goals in conference games behind Shannon Taylor and Lindsey Conrad of Syracuse. Poulin recorded eight goals, while Taylor and Conrad tallied 10 and nine goals, respectively, in league play. However, Poulin has a higher scoring efficiency based on her shot attempts. Poulin averages just 2.50 shots per game in conference play, while Taylor and Conrad have attempted averages of 8.00 shots per game and 4.67 shots per game, respectively. CAREER YEAR... Of the nine players on Providence s roster that have cracked the scoring column in 2008, six players have recorded single-season career highs in points, while one other has tied her career high. FRIARS ONE OF THREE TEAMS TO SCORE MORE THAN ONE GOAL VS. SYRACUSE IN The Providence field hockey team is just one of three squads this season to score more than one goal against Syracuse during the regular-season schedule. Additionally, the Friars are the only BIG EAST Conference team to do so. Junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine) was credited with both of the Friars goals against Syracuse in a 4-2 loss on September 26. The only other teams who managed more than one goal against the Orange were Central Michigan (three) and Massachusetts (four). However, the Orange still earned the win in each instance. FRIARS IN THE MIDST OF THREE-GAME WIN STREAK... The Friars enter the 2008 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship on a three-game win streak. It matches the Friars longest win streak of the season. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain (Branford, Conn.) is having another solid season in goal for the Friars. In 1,436 minutes of action she owns a 1.56 goals against average and a save percentage. She has recorded 100 saves and has allowed 32 goals. She also has posted five shut-out victories on the season, bringing her career total to 17. PROVIDENCE RECORDS DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS FOR THIRD- STRAIGHT SEASON... The Friars recorded 12 wins during the regularseason in It marks the third-consecutive season that the program has compiled double-digit victories, and marks the longest stretch of consecutive seasons with double-digit wins since Providence reeled off double digit wins in six-straight seasons from YOUTH IN NUMBERS... Providence s top-five scorers this season include two juniors and three sophomores. Each of these five players have eclipsed the 20-point mark on the year, led by junior Nellie Poulin (Oakland, Maine), who has notched a career-high 33 points on 16 goals and one assist. Additionally, of the nine Friars who have scored at least one point this season, just two are seniors (Jessica Lane - 10 points; Meghan Holden - nine points). 5 DIANE MADL Head Coach Seventh Season Alma Mater Connecticut '89 has settled in quite nicely as head coach of the Providence College field hockey team, and embarks on her seventh season with the squad in She was hired as the program s sixth head coach all-time on February 4, Since her arrival, she has transformed the field hockey program into a contender in the BIG EAST Conference and put the Friars back on the map among some of the top programs in the country. In what began as a rebuilding process in 2002, Madl has compiled an overall record of in her seven seasons, including a mark that spans each of the last three seasons (2006, 2007, 2008). Madl has helped to guide the Friars to the BIG EAST Championship each of the last three seasons, marking the longest streak of consecutive appearances since making three-straight trips from 1996 to In what is described as one of the most successful seasons in program history, the Friars posted an 18-4 overall record in 2006 and captured the BIG EAST Conference Regular-Season title with a 5-1 mark in league play. Providence s 18 victories during that campaign are tied for second most all-time in program history, while the Friars five league victories marks a program best. More impressive was Providence s record versus nationally-ranked opponents at 5-3. The program quickly found itself among the nation's best and was ranked in the NFHCA Division I National Coaches Poll for nineconsecutive weeks, including seven-straight weeks in the top-15. At season s end, the Friars earned a final ranking of 11th in the nation. Additionally, Madl was honored as the BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year, Dita/NFHCA Division I Northeast Region Coach of the Year and Words Unlimited Coach of the Year. Lauren Sickel and Rachel Chamberlain became the first Friars since 1997 to claim All-America honors, as both players were named to the third team. Chamberlain was tabbed BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and was one of five players to earn All-BIG EAST honors. Among the five All-BIG EAST selections, three Friars were awarded First-Team status, marking the most First-Team honorees during a single-season in program history. Providence also placed five Friars on the NFHCA Division I All-Northeast Region Team. The ride continued in 2007, as the Friars posted a 14-8 overall record, including a 4-2 mark in the BIG EAST. The Friars advanced to the BIG EAST Championship game for the second-straight season, after defeating No. 11 Louisville, 2-0, in the semifinal game held at Coyne Field in Syracuse, N.Y. on November 3. The Friars dropped a heartbreaking, 1-0, decision to No. 4 Connecticut in the championship game the following day. The Huskies found the back of the cage during the final three minutes of play to secure the victory - and eventually went on to represent the BIG EAST Conference at the NCAA semifinals. Despite the loss, the Friars proved they have arrived to the elite level of collegiate field hockey - showing their ability to compete day in and day out with the top teams in the nation. Individual accolades rushed in, once again in Chamberlain was tabbed BIG EAST Conference Goalkeeper of the Year for the second-straight season. Five Friars were named All-BIG EAST and NFHCA All-Northeast Region selections. In 2008, Madl and her squad have compiled a 12-8 overall record, including victories over three ranked opponents (#13 Boston College, #16 Rutgers and #17 Massachusetts). During Madl s tenure on the sidelines, she has mentored two of the 33-year old program s eight All-America selections. She also has helped to develop a total of 18 All-BIG EAST selections and 18 All-Northeast Region honorees. More importantly, her teams have competed just as fiercely in the classroom. Madl has had the privilege of coaching 15 studentathletes who have earned NFHCA Division I National Academic Squad honors a total of 30 times, and 33 players who have been named to the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team a total of 66 times. Madl, a native of Mountaintop, Pennsylvania, was a three-sport stand-out in field hockey, basketball and softball at Crestwood High School. Upon completion of her high school career, she went on to play field hockey at the University of Connecticut from While at UConn, she helped the Huskies capture the NCAA Division I National Championship

6 in She was a two-time All-America selection as a junior and senior OVERALL COACHING RECORDS (1987, 1988) and earned the prestigious Honda Broderick Award upon the AT PROVIDENCE completion of her career, as the top collegiate field hockey player in the nation. Madl also excelled in the classroom at Connecticut, where she earned Linda Mathinas (.444) Academic All-America honors and graduated magna cum laude, with a Mary Beth Alexander (.629) bachelor s degree in business administration in (.547) Madl went on to play for the U.S. National Team and competed in a (.634) Bill Davidson (.375) multitude of events for Team USA, including the World University Games 2002-present (.532) (1989), World Cup (1990), Inter-Continental Cup (1989 and 1995) and the 1976-present (33 yrs.) (.558) Champions Trophy (1995). She reached the pinnacle of her playing career in 1996 as a member of the U.S. National Team that competed in the OlymYEAR-BY-YEAR RECORDS pic Games, held in Atlanta, Georgia Linda Mathinas Even with the demands of collegiate field hockey as head coach at Mary Beth Providence, Madl still finds time to give back to U.S. Field Hockey. She Alexander remains very active with the Futures Program, having coached the U Mary Beth team in the USA/Canadian Challenge Cup (2005) and assisted the U Alexander team that participated in the U.S. Olympic Development Select/Futures Elite International Easter Tournament in the Netherlands (2007). In 2008, she teamed with Boston College Kate Denning Head Coach Ainslee Lamb on the sidelines to help the New England HPTC Team capture the National Title Madl s coaching career began at the University of Maine as an assis tant coach in She remained with the Black Bear program for nine seasons until departing for Providence College In addition to her success at Providence College and her activity with (.558) in the circles of U.S. Field Hockey, Madl served as the camp director for Providence College Field Hockey Day Camps in 2003 and Since then, she has taken ownership of Circle to Circle Field Hockey Camps, LLC., which came to fruition in During the summer of 2006, Madl added a Team Camp to her Circle to Circle summer circuit and has flourished, becoming one of the top camp organizations in the Northeast. Madl was inducted into the Luzerne County (Pa.)
