1 Virginia Cavaliers 2018 FIELD HOCKEY QUICK LOOK AT THE HOOS The Cavaliers are a young team with 10 newcomers on the roster, including nine freshmen All six of the freshmen who have played this season have scored at least one goal Grace Wallis leads the team with 13 points, four goals and five assists A freshman has scored the gamewinner in four of the Cavaliers victories this season with Peyton Tollaksen netting the first two goals in UVA s 8-1 victory over Drexel and Jacquelyn Wilkins scoring the deciding goal against Longwood and Greer Gill netting the double-overtime winner against Syracuse as well as the winner against Maryland Junior Erin Shanahan and senior Greta Ell scored the Cavaliers goals in the victory over Miami (Ohio). The duo also provided all the scoring in last Friday s win at William & Mary. Both now have three goals on the season Fifth-year senior Carrera Lucas started every game in goal last year for the Cavaliers and has been the Cavaliers lone presence in the goal this season Carrera Lucas leads the ACC and is ranked third in the nation with a.796 save percentage. She also leads the ACC in saves per game (5.38) The Cavaliers won the 2017 ACC regular-season title and were the No. 1 seed in last year s tournament, but fell in the semifinals to North Carolina Michele Madison was the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year RANKED OPPONENTS The Cavaliers have played seven matches this season against teams ranked in the top-10, picking up a win against then-ranked No. 10 Syracuse and downing No. 2 Maryland All of UVA s losses this season have come against top-25 opponents Virginia has played the third-toughest schedule in the nation, only trailing in strength of schedule to Princeton and Syracuse RANKINGS The Cavaliers moved up to No. 16 in this week s Penn Monto/NFHCA poll. They have been ranked as high as No. 7 this season and as low as No. 23 The Cavaliers are No. 13 in this week s RPI Virginia has been ranked in the top- 25 every single week since the 2012 preseason poll LAST WEEK The Cavaliers won three-straight games to close out the regularseason, including the 3-1 upset of No. 2 Maryland on Senior Day (Oct. 21) UVA wrapped up the regular-season with a 3-2 double-overtime victory at William & Mary last Friday, a game played in a constant downpour The Cavaliers led 1-0 at halftime, but William & Mary tied it up two minutes into the second half. Virginia went up 2-1 midway through the second period, but the Tribe tied it back up eight minutes later. The two teams played a scoreless 10-minutes overtime period before Greta Ell scored the gamewinner 36 seconds into the second overtime period THIS WEEK The Cavaliers finished the season tied for fourth in the ACC and are the No. 5 seed in the tournament They will face Boston College in the first round of the tournament. Virginia fell 2-0 in the first meeting of the year at BC The Cavaliers were the 2016 ACC Champions. The team were the No. 6 seed in the tournament, the lowest-ever seed to win a championship PLAYERS OF THE WEEK The Cavaliers swept the ACC honors on Oct. 23, with Carrera Lucas being named the Defensive Player of the Week and Greer Gill the Offensive Player of the Week Lucas was also named the Co- Longstreth/NFHCA National Defensive Player of the Week. Gill earned an honorable mention for the offensive honor Amber Exechiels was named the Rookie of the week by Synapse Sports Lucas repeated ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors this week (Oct. 30), sharing the award with Louisville s Ayeshia McFerran. The two played on the same team for one year at Unionville High School. Annie s twin sister, Maddie, is playing field hockey at Michigan State Two other players on the current roster have sisters who are alumnae of the program: Catesby Willis (sister, Phoebe 12) and Rachel Robinson (sister, Katie 13) Additionally, six other members of the team are legacies with either one or both of their parents graduating from UVA. Catesby Willis is the 17th member of her family to attend UVA (6th generation dating back to 1861) In all, nine members of the team have had a family member attend UVA NATIONAL TEAMS The Cavaliers have two players on the US Women s National Development Squad, one on the US Women s National Indoor Team, one on the US U21 team, four players on the US U19 Junior National Team as well as a member of the Dutch U19 junior national squad and two on the US U19 Indoor team Senior Carrera Lucas is a member of the US Women s Development Squad. Lucas was a goalkeeper for the US Women s National Development Squad, competing in a four-game test series against Chile s Women s National Team and U19 Junior National Team in May in Santiago, Chile Junior Erin Shanahan is also a member of the US Women s Development Squad. Shanahan was a member of the USA Women s Indoor U19 National Team and earned an invitation to last year s U21 Junior National Camp. Freshman Greer Gill is a member of the US U-21 Junior National Team. Has been a member of the US U19 Junior National Team for the last two years, competing with the squad in Germany in 2017 and Ireland this year Sophomores Lauren Hausheer and Makayla Gallen have been offered a trial for the U21 team at the conclusion of the 2018 collegiate season Annie McDonough is a member of the US Women s National Indoor Team and competed at the 2018 Women s National World Cup in Berlin, Germany in February. The veteran of international competition has also been a member of the USA U17 and U19 indoor junior national teams and is a current member of the US U19 squad after playing on the U17 team in 2016 Freshmen Peyton Tollaksen and Grace Wallis are on the US U19 roster alongside Greer Gill and Annie McDonough Freshman Amber Ezechiels is a member of the Dutch U19 Junior National Team Freshman Lizzy Shim and Taylor Henriksen are members of the US U19 Indoor Team VIRGINIA COACHING STAFF Virginia head coach Michele Madison is in her 13th season at Virginia and her 30th overall as a head coach Named the 2017 ACC Coach of the Year, her first time winning the honor. She is the second UVA Coach to earn the award, joining Missy Sanders (1997) Madison is one of only two active Division I head coaches to be a part of two United States Olympic staffs, having worked as a manager with the 1988 Olympic Team in Seoul and served as the head goalkeeper coach with the 1996 squad in Atlanta. Madison is a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame Assistant coach Ole Keusgen is in his fourth season at Virginia. Keusgen is also be one of the coaches leading U.S.A. Field Hockey s U19 Women s National Team and Junior High Performance program in 2017 Keusgen has been playing field hockey since the age of six, including playing professionally in Germany with one of the most successful field hockey clubs in European history, Uhlenhorst Mülheim, winning the German Indoor championship in 2015 and the Euro Indoor Club Cup in Assistant coach Rachel Dawson Dawson was a three-time Olympian, competing in Beijing in 2008 and London in 2012 and helped lead the Americans to a fifth-place showing at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games 2 NFHCA COACHES POLL WEEK 9 - Oct North Carolina Maryland Duke UConn Princeton Harvard Michigan Iowa Penn State Saint Joseph s Rutgers Louisville Boston College Delaware Liberty VIRGINIA Syracuse Maine Ohio State Wake Forest Albany Stanford Northwestern Boston U Miami (Ohio) 62 NR Dawson has 298 international caps Dawson played at North Carolina and earned the 2007 Honda Award as the National Player of the Year for field hockey and was selected as one of the five finalists for the Honda-Broderick Cup as the nation s top collegiate female athlete Dawson was the 2007 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and the 2007 ACC Tournament MVP TARA VITTESE With the graduation of Tara Vittese in May, UVA will be playing without a Vittese in the starting lineup for the first time since 2007 Tara Vittese was the first-ever player to be a three-time NFHCA National Player of the Year. She was a two-time ACC Offensive Player of the Year and a four-time First Team All-American. She was the Virginia athletic department s female athlete of the year last year Tara joined her sister, Michelle, in the starting lineup for the US Women s National Team in all three games the squad played in the 2018 World Cup. Sister, Carissa, is also a member of the USWNT but was not on the roster for the World Cup. She returned to action in September at the Sompo Cup Four Nations Tournament Michelle played for the Cavaliers from and in Carissa was with the team from Tara played from
