2 NCAA Round of 16: Virginia 3, Marquette 1 Despite playing with 10 men for the final 89 minutes, Virginia advanced through the third round with a 3-1 win over No. 9 seed Marquette on Dec. 1. Defender Matt Brown was shown a red card just 57 seconds into the game. Scott Thomsen, Darius Madison and Todd Wharton each scored for Virginia. Wharton s penalty-kick goal came just 20 seconds after Marquette scored in the second half; Marcus Salandy-Defour created the PK after getting taken down on his drive deep into the box. Marquette out-shot Virginia, 13-11, but eight of the Cavaliers shots were on goal. NCAA second round: virginia 2, st. john s 0 Virginia opened its 2013 NCAA Tournament with a 2-0 second-round win over St. John s on Nov. 24 at a frigid Klöckner Stadium. The Cavaliers scored both of their goals off set pieces a first-half goal from Ryan Zinkhan and a secondhalf score from Eric Bird. St. John s out-shot Virginia, 9-8, and put four shots on goal to three for the Cavaliers. UVa took five corner kicks to one for the Red Storm. Calle Brown saved all four of the Red Storm s shots on goal in recording the Cavaliers 10th clean sheet. ACC Tournament Recap Virginia battled three of the top-10 teams in the country in the ACC tournament in taking runner-up honors. The Cavaliers won 1-0 in overtime at No. 9 Wake Forest on a Todd Wharton penalty kick in the 94th minute. UVa rallied from a two-goal deficit in the final seven minutes to tie No. 1-ranked Notre Dame, 3-3, in the semifinals. The Cavaliers won the PK shootout, 4-3, as Calle Brown stopped two Fighting Irish PKs. In the championship game, UVa fell, 1-0, to fourthranked Maryland on an own goal in the 88th minute. Brown, Wharton, Eric Bird and Marcus Salandy-Defour were named to the all-tournament team. Two Cavaliers With Philly Connections Two Virginia players hail from the Philadelphia area: Darius Madison (Philadelphia/LaSalle College HS) and Kyle McCord (Chester Springs/Haverford). Brown becomes big presence in goal Redshirt junior Calle Brown has started the last seven matches after not making a start previously in his career. He has recorded three clean sheets, and UVa is in his starts. Brown picked up three saves against Marquette, but all three came in a 30-second flurry, including a fantastic sprawling save on the line. He recorded four saves in the shutout win over St. John s in the NCAA second round. Brown saved four shots against Notre Dame in the ACC semifinals, then stopped two-consecutive shots in the PK shootout as UVa advanced to the finals. The redshirt junior had played 37 minutes, 50 seconds in his career prior to this stretch. Those came in the second half of the Pitt game earlier this season (he was not on the team during the 2012 season). Virginia finishes ninth in NCAA RPI Virginia moved up to No. 9 in the final edition of the NCAA RPI. Counting Maryland, 20 of UVa s 24 matches have come against foes which are ranked among the top 60, including 16 in the top 40. 3 Defense Also Steps Up After getting burned for 10 goals in its first six matches, Virginia has settled in defensively over the last 17 contests. The Cavaliers have conceded 13 goals in the last 17 games, but six of the scores came in two games (3-3 draws vs. Maryland and Notre Dame) and two were own goals. In that span, UVa has recorded eight shutouts. In all, the Cavaliers have racked up an ACC-best 10 shutouts in Bird Among ACC Leaders Eric Bird has been a major catalyst on offense and ranks among the ACC leaders in goals and points. He is seventh in the ACC with seven goals and eighth with 19 points.
