1 ActionLine...Your Board Meeting Update August 17, 2011 Trustees set Board election for Nov. 8 During its Aug. 16 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees unanimously approved a school board election for Positions 1, 2, 6 and 7. The election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 8. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Trustee Marine Jones holds the Position 1 seat, Trustee Dr. Alton Smith holds the Position 2 seat, Trustee Merlin Griggs holds the Position 6 seat and Trustee Dr. Viola M. Garcia holds the Position 7 seat. Candidates may file for a place on the ballot between now and Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 5 p.m. Candidates can pick up an election packet from Yolanda Loera at the district s Central Office (located at Aldine Westfield Road) between the hours of 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. (candidates have until 5 p.m. to file on Sept. 7). Early voting will take place from Oct. 24-Nov. 4 at any polling place in Harris County. Voters may apply for a ballot by mail between Sept. 9 and Nov. 1 (applications must be received, not postmarked). To apply for a ballot by mail, visit or call (713) Ballot by mail applications can also be picked up at any public library. Harris County will provide polling place locations prior to the election. Locations will be listed on the county s website and in the Houston Chronicle prior to the election. Staff assignments approved During the Aug. 16 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved a number of staff assignments. Jamie Spates was named assistant principal at MacArthur Senior High School after serving as a skills specialist at that same school. Spates received her bachelor s degree in education from Texas Tech University in 1984 and her master s degree in reading from Sam Houston State University in She meets district requirements for this position. She began her teaching career as a seventh-grade science teacher at Liberty Middle School in Liberty ISD in In 1987, she moved to Aldine ISD and was assigned to teach science and history at Aldine Middle School. She transferred to MacArthur Senior High School in 1992 to teach biology. During her tenure at MacArthur, she was named the Exxon Science Teacher of the Year. In 1998, she returned to Aldine Middle School to teach eighth-grade science. In 2001, she transferred to Nimitz Ninth Grade School to teach biology and world geography and in 2006 she returned to Aldine Middle School to serve as the science and social skills specialist. She transferred back to MacArthur in 2007 to assume her current assignment as the science and social skills specialist. Spates has 27 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent 24 of those years
2 with Aldine ISD. Brenda White was named assistant principal at Aldine Senior High School after serving as a math skills specialist at that same school. White received her bachelor s degree in curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M University in 1986 and her master s degree in educational leadership from Sam Houston State University in She is certified as a principal. She began her teaching career as a seventh-grade math teacher in Dayton ISD in In 1988, she moved to the Hull-Daisetta school district to teach seventh- and eighth-grade math. She became an algebra teacher and junior varsity basketball coach in Tarkington ISD in In 1992, she moved to the Little Cypress- Mauriceville school district to teach seventh-grade algebra and coach basketball and volleyball. The following year, she moved out of state to assume the position of head girls basketball and track coach at Starks High School in Calcashieu Parrish in Louisiana. She also taught sixth- and seventh-grade science. In 1994, she returned to Texas as a sixth- and eighth-grade math teacher and head volleyball and basketball coach at Evadale Junior High School in Evadale ISD. From , she worked at Kirbyville High School in Kirbyville ISD as a math teacher and served as the head girls basketball coach and assistant volleyball coach. She then spent the next six years in Beaumont ISD teaching math and working as the head volleyball and assistant girls basketball coach. In 2004, she moved to the Houston area and assumed a position as a math teacher and coach at Aldine Ninth Grade School. In 2007, she moved to Aldine Senior High School to serve as a math skills specialist. White has 25 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent seven of those years in Aldine ISD. Lidia Calderon was named assistant principal at Nimitz Senior High School after serving as an ESOL teacher at Eisenhower Senior High School. Calderon received her bachelor s degree in Spanish from the University of Houston in She meets district requirements for this position. She began her teaching career in 2001 as a Spanish teacher at Eisenhower Senior High School. In 2006, she moved to Cy-Woods High School in Cy- Fair ISD to teach Spanish. She returned to Aldine ISD in 2007 to teach English for Speakers of Other Languages at Eisenhower Senior High School. Calderon has 10 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent nine of those years with Aldine ISD. Gideon Schleeter was named assistant principal at Stovall Middle School after serving as a science teacher at that same school. Schleeter received his bachelor s degree in education from the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater in He meets district requirements for this position. He began his teaching career as a science teacher and football coach at Stovall Middle School in Schleeter has spent all of his three years in education with Aldine ISD. Jermon Malone was named assistant principal at Magrill Elementary School after serving as a special education teacher at Parker Intermediate School. Malone received his bachelor s degree in business administration and marketing from Prairie View A&M University in 2003, his master s degree in architecture in community planning and economic development in 2005 from that same university and a master s degree in education from Prairie View A&M University in He is certified as a principal. He began his teaching career in 2004 as a special education teacher at Parker Intermediate School. Malone has spent all of his seven years in education with Aldine ISD. Danielle Johnson was named assistant principal at Oleson Elementary School after
3 serving as a first-grade teacher at that same school. Johnson received her bachelor s degree in early childhood and elementary education from the University of New Orleans in 1994 and her master s degree in educational administration from that same university in She is certified as a principal. She began her teaching career in 1994 as an elementary teacher in the Orleans Parish School District in New Orleans. In 2003, she became a literacy facilitator in the same district and in 2004 she assumed the position of assistant principal. She moved to the Houston area in 2005, first working as a tutor in the Communities in Schools program and then as a teacher at Oleson Elementary School. She was named Oleson s Teacher of the Year during the school year. Johnson has 16 years of experience in the field of education and she has spent five of those years with Aldine ISD. Susan Rehan was named assistant principal at Worsham Elementary School after serving as an instructional facilitator at Mendel Elementary School. Rehan received her bachelor s degree in education from the University of Iowa in 1993, her master s degree in second language education from the University of Houston in 2000 and her master s degree in educational leadership from Stephen F. Austin State University in She is certified as a principal. She began her teaching career as a fourth-grade teacher at Orange Grove Elementary School in In 1996, she became a second-grade gifted and talented teacher at that same school and in 1997 she began teaching English as a second language at Orange Grove. She transferred to Harris Academy in 2000 where she taught fourth-grade English as a second language for one year, was the Title I writing specialist for a year and the skills specialist/testing coordinator for three years. In 2005, she transferred to Odom Elementary School where she served as the Title I skills specialist and then in 2006 she became the testing coordinator at Odom. She moved into her current position as Mendel s instructional facilitator in Rehan has spent all of her 18 years in education with Aldine ISD. Malikah Carroll was named a social worker at Orange Grove Elementary School after serving as a behavior intervention specialist at Gray Elementary School. Carroll received her bachelor s degree in social work from Tennessee State University in 2000 and her master s degree in social work from Wayne State University in She meets district requirements for this position. She began her career in social work as a clinical social worker at Harper/Hutzel Hospital in Detroit in In 2005, she became the school social worker at Voyageur Academy in the same city. She moved to the Houston area in 2006 and served as a contract social worker at Highland Park Care Center from November 2006 until April 2007 when she assumed a social worker position at Spring Branch Medical Center. In 2008, she accepted a position as an intervention specialist at MacArthur Ninth Grade School and in 2010 she transferred to Gray Elementary to serve as a behavior intervention specialist. Carroll has four years of experience in education and she has spent three years with Aldine ISD. During the Aug. 16 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees approved one administrative transfer. Mary Ellen Restivo moved from counselor at Drew Academy to counselor at Eisenhower Senior High School.
4 Region 4 executive director honors Dr. Bamberg Dr. Bill McKinney, executive director of Region 4, attended the Aug. 16 Board meeting to officially announce that Aldine ISD Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg has been named the Region 4 Superintendent of the Year. Dr. McKinney presented Dr. Bamberg a plaque on behalf of Region 4 and announced that she is now in the running for the Superintendent of the Year of the State of Texas. Dr. Bamberg and the 19 other regional winners will be interviewed later this month and five finalists will be named for the state award. The winner will be announced in Austin on Oct. 1 during the TASA/TASB Conference. Aldine Council of PTAs honor golf tournament winners During the Aug. 16 Board meeting, volunteers with the M.B. Sonny Donaldson Golf Tournament, benefitting the Aldine Council of PTAs, named Aldine Senior High School the winner of the Superintendent s Participation Trophy. On hand to accept the award was Aldine Senior High School principal Jan DeBlance. The trophy is awarded to the school that has the most employees participate in the school, in addition to providing donations and prizes, and hole sponsorships. Additionally, Dr. Linda Rodriguez, the Aldine Vertical Area Superintendent, also received a plaque on behalf of the committee. On hand to make the presentations were tournament directors Pete Stewart, David Brenek, Nancy Martin and Judy Hoya. Stewart announced that money raised from the tournament, held June 17 at Cypresswood Golf Course, provided seven $1,000 college scholarships to 2011 graduates of Aldine ISD. The scholarships were presented on behalf of the Aldine Council of PTAs. Stewart also thanked the many businesses and individuals who donated prizes and their time to the tournament.
5 Program presented Twiana Collier, coordinator of student financial aid, presented the program during the Aug. 16 Trustee s meeting. She informed the audience of the number of scholarships (and their monetary value) that Aldine ISD seniors received during the school year. She also provided an overview of how the district informs students and parents of the ways to make a college education affordable and financially possible and the number of workshops the district holds to inform students and parents of scholarship opportunities.
