1 ActionLine...Your Board Meeting Update November 16, 2016 Trustee Rick Ogden resigns from Board Aldine ISD Trustee Rick Ogden announced his resignation from the Aldine ISD Board of Education. The announcement came during the Board s Nov. 15 meeting. Mr. Ogden and his wife Charlotte are moving out of the district. School board members must reside within the district to serve on the Board of Education. Mr. Ogden, who currently serves as vice-president, has served on the Board for 26 years. He was appointed in August 1990 to fill the unexpired term of Walter Stovall. He was elected to that position in January Prior to becoming a trustee, he served on the district s Project 2000 Committee. Mr. Ogden has held all four Board offices and chaired numerous committees. A 1992 member of Leadership Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), Mr. Ogden earned the title Master Trustee. In addition to serving on the school board, Mr. Ogden has served as a director of TASB and was that group s president in He has held all offices in TASB and served as a member of the TASB Risk Management Fund Board as well as a trainer for The Center for the Reform of School Systems (CRSS). Mr. Ogden is a native Houstonian, a 33-year resident of Aldine and has four children who are all graduates of Aldine High School. Mr. Ogden is the longest-serving member of the Board of Trustees with his 26 years of service. It has been my privilege to serve Aldine ISD as part of the team of eight for more than 26 years, Mr. Ogden said. In addition to current board members, my fondest memories are centered in working with fellow trustees who worked together to create the best possible education environment for our students, administration, staff and support staff. Three superintendents with whom I shared a journey of student-centered focus Mr. M.B. Sonny Donaldson, Mrs. Nadine Kujawa and Dr. Wanda Bamberg, as well as Deputy Superintendent Dr. Archie Blanson, made my job as a board member not only memorable but joyous. These incredible education professionals, supported by a stellar cabinet and numerous educators and teachers, helped to make Aldine a district of distinction as well as a model for other school districts to follow. Board President Rose Avalos spoke on behalf of the Board and thanked Mr. Ogden for his service over the last 26 years. Rick Ogden s leadership initiated the Aldine ISD school boards true involvement at the state level, Ms. Avalos said. His experience has been invaluable to so many of us. His commitment and loyalty as an Aldine school board Trustee has enhanced our advocacy efforts for all students.

2 Superintendent Dr. Wanda Bamberg also thanked Mr. Ogden for his leadership. I want to thank Mr. Ogden for his dedicated service to our district over the last 26 years. He has been a valuable member of our team and we will miss his leadership and guidance, said. Dr. Bamberg. We wish him and Charlotte the best as they embark on this new chapter in their lives. Mr. Ogden is not only well respected in Aldine and by his fellow board members, but across the state for his service to TASB. Mr. Ogden s resignation means the Board will need to find a replacement for his position. The Board s Selection Committee, consisting of Paul Shanklin, Dr. Viola M. Garcia and Steve Mead, will begin the process of screening applicants. It is the responsibility of the committee to interview potential Board members and make a recommendation to the full Board. The committee will generate a list from the names of individuals previously provided by the community, Board members, the superintendent and others during the last vacancy created in The committee may also solicit recommendations for names of additional candidates. Mr. Ogden will remain as a participating member of the Board as a holdover until his replacement is found. Mr. Ogden s term is up in November The person chosen for his position will run in the next election. Board approves new slate of officers During the Nov. 15 Board meeting, Trustees approved a new slate of officers who will be sworn in in December. Each year, the Board reorganizes in December with a new president, vice-president, secretary and assistant secretary to serve as officers for one year. In November, the Board Nominating Committee presents a full slate of officers for approval by the full Board during the regular business meeting. In past years, members on the Board have served as officers on a rotation basis. Most school districts do not follow this practice, but instead have the Nominating Committee present a slate for approval that is based on nominations for each office. This year, AISD Board will depart from the rotation process and nominate officers based on members skills and availability. Trustee Paul Shanklin, chairman of the Nominating Committee, recommended that Dr. Viola M. Garcia serve as president, Rose Avalos serve as vicepresident, Steve Mead serve as secretary and Paul Shanklin serve as assistant secretary. The new slate of officers was approved by the Board at its Nov. 15 meeting. Joining Mr. Shanklin on the Nominating Committee were Merlin Griggs and Rick Ogden. Staff assignments announced During the Nov. 15 Board meeting, four staff assignments were announced. Bernard L Tunya was named program director for middle school science after serving as the science academic lead teacher at Humble Middle School. Stephanie Knight was named program director for intermediate mathematics after serving as a skills specialist at Raymond Academy. Nguyen Bui was named executive director of technology innovation and initiatives

3 after serving as director of technology web services. Dominic Tong was named executive director of technology infrastructure and engineering after serving as director of technology support services. Akilah Willery was named executive director of instructional technology integration after serving as program director of instructional technology. Thomas Halbert was named an assistant principal at MacArthur High School after serving as the STEM Endorsement Coordinator with Cy-Fair ISD. Dr. James L. Bishop was named an assistant principal at Eisenhower High School after serving as an assistant principal with Cy-Fair ISD. AEF, ASF receive $20,000 donation from AISD During the Nov. 15 Board of Trustees meeting, the Aldine Education Foundation (AEF) and Aldine Scholarship Fund (ASF) received $20,000 in donations from Aldine ISD. Nicole Robinson, executive director of the Lone Star College Foundation, accepted a $10,000 check from AEF on behalf of the college to provide ASF scholarships for AISD graduates to attend Lone Star College-North Harris. AISD also presented a $10,000 check to the Aldine Education Foundation. Representing AEF were AEF President Elect Bill Ginder, AEF member Jeff Hartman and AEF director Michele McGovern. Business partners recognized During the Nov. 15 Board meeting, two of the district s business partners were recognized for the contributions they make to the district. The two businesses recognized were CEVA Logistics and United Airlines. CEVA Logistics has partnered with Worsham Elementary School for more than 12 years. During that time, their employees have served as Junior Achievement volunteers, career day speakers, and have sponsored various school events. Representing CEVA Logistics at the Nov. 15 Board meeting was Stephanie Smith and Doreen Berryhill. United Airlines has been a major

4 partner with Aldine ISD. They have sponsored airfare to bring the Tuskegee Airmen to the district, and have provided first class tickets for the district s Teacher of the Year winners. They expanded their donation this year to include the Aldine Education Foundation by sponsoring AEF s A Dollar Makes A Difference campaign. Representing United Airlines at the Nov. 15 Board meeting were Darrin Hall and Yunealda Randall. The Texas Association of School Boards (TASB) presented both businesses with a certificate of appreciation. Employees, schools recognized During the Nov. 15 Board of Trustees meeting, a number of Aldine ISD employees and schools were recognized for the contributions they make to the district on a daily basis. Dani Sheffield, executive director of child nutrition services, named the cafeteria staff at Aldine Middle School as her department s Team of the Month. This staff also provides breakfast and lunch for Lane School. The Aldine Middle staff cafeteria team consists of manager Lisa Hicks, and specialists Nahla Babe, Jamie Gallegos, Nereida Lopez, Ermelinda Moreno, Maria Rodriguez, Ebony Stewart, Isabel Valdez, Nina Washington, Lanora Barber, Angela Smith, and Alexandria Sykes. Aldine Middle School s principal is Marcus Pruitt and Lane School s principal is Dale Prioleau. Emitte Roque, executive director of buildings and properties, named Houston Intermediate School as his department s Building of the Month. On hand to accept the award were head custodian Roy Stewart and principal Dr. Rhonda Shelby-King. Robin DeRouen, executive director of transportation, named Leonard Nelson as her department s Employee of the Month for the month of November. Nelson works at the West Side Transportation Department as a bus driver.

5 Dr. Nathan Boughton, executive director of human resources, and Dr. Robin Williams, executive director of human resources, named Tina Houston as their department s Employee of the Quarter. Audit approved During the Nov. 15 Board meeting, Aldine ISD Trustees unanimously approved the district s audit for the school year, presented by Anne-Marie Hazzan, assistant superintendent of finance. There were no exceptions found in the audit and it will now be forwarded to the Texas Education Agency. Also during the Nov. 15 Board meeting, the Board approved Dr. Tamika Alford- Stephens (assistant superintendent of finance designate) recommendation of approving the issuance of Aldine ISD unlimited tax refunding bonds series The district s Bond Attorney, Barron Wallace, and Financial Advisor, Terrell Palmer, presented a bond order that would allow the issuance of up to $140 million of unlimited tax refunding bonds. Since the current market has such low interest rates, this proposed order could refund Series 2003, 2007, and 2008 bonds and save the district approximately $17.8 million in future interest costs. Dr. Alford-Stephens also conducted Aldine's FIRST Hearing, and announced that for the 14th straight year Aldine received a Superior rating from the state s School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST). The goal of School FIRST is to achieve quality performance in the management of school districts financial resources. Grants announced During the November Trustee s meeting, Stacey Smith, program director of resource development, announced one grant. Phyllis Cormier, principal of Victory Early College High School, and teacher Jarrod Frederickson secured a $ grant from Donors Choose. The funds will be used by Victory students to subscribe to the New York Times to stay current on the issues of the day.

6 Program presented During the Nov. 15 Trustee s meeting, Jacob Elmhorst, the I-tech at Ermel Elementary School presented the program. Elmhorst served as the chairperson of the Technology and Curriculum Conference of Aldine (TCCA). He provided an overview of the highly successful event.
