1 Tilden Outdoor Program Summer 2018 Weekly Schedule of Activities Strawberry Banana Group Ages

2 Plans for Week 1: June It s the first week of summer! The group will combine more time with our Mango Coconuts, ages Nature Exploration: Walk down to Froggy Flats and listen, look, and play under the big trees. Try making a Fairy/Troll/Toad House or some Andy Goldsworthy inspired temporary nature art; Hike to the Little Farm, Feed the Animals: The animals love the lettuce & celery we bring to feed them, especially those goats. Art Fun: Hand Sew a secret monkey pouch: What treasure will you store in your new little bag?; Roller Painting: Dip rollers in paint and GO! All the way down the table or completely cover an area - it s fun to mix colors and really move; Solar Beads and Bells: Design some jewelry that rings and changes color; Create Mini clay creatures does yours fly, swim, climb, run or do it all!? Most led by Samantha Swor, our Art Teacher. Music and Cooking!: Drumming with Yari Mander. Veggie Sushi with Chef Brad-Make and enjoy! Food items are organic (90% of the time), vegetarian, and Kosher; Edible Campfires: Make and eat your own little campfire with pretzels sticks, dried mango, etc. and learn about campfire safety. Friday Fun Carnival: Play games, collect and trade-up prizes at the store, eat some yummy popcorn!

Mix and match special qualities to get the perfect magical concoction; Mix Colors with eye droppers and coffee filters Can you make a color you ve never seen before?; Dot Painting: Fun to paint under the trees of Tilden; Most led by Samantha Swor, our Art Teacher. Friday Fun Messy Skit and Bubble Dance Party: Watch the youth leaders and counselors get messy and dance with bubbles all around on the field.

Explore around the Meadows site, learn about the trees and plants growing in the park, use magnifying glasses, nature books, and just take time to look at what s around us. Art : Make a Collage Treasure Map: Design your own treasure map with tape, fabric, and jewels! Name the landmarks and mark the buried treasure with an "X"; Create your own Merfolk/Pirate Buttons to wear: Use our official button-making machine; Make a Card for someone with Stamps, ink and oil pastels: Who will you send a message to? Samantha Swor, our Art Teacher will lead most of these projects Exercise: Play Group Games together: Tag, parachute games, and medic with our experienced and fun staff & youth leaders; Hoops, Lunastix, Yoga Balls, Beamo: Fun to learn some new tricks and build on what you know; Walk the Tightrope: Test your balance on a Slackline! Music and Cooking- Make some music on the field with Diane Bock, a music teacher from Santa Cruz. Fruit Kebabs with Chef Brad-gather fruit, make a design, then eat! Wacky Wednesday Dress like a Pirate, a Merperson, a Creature of the Sea, or some interesting combination! We ll have Face Painting, Temporary Tattoos, and Costumes to try out! Friday Fun Obstacle Course & Dance Party: Get ready to jump, crawl, and hop your way through a fun course on the field. Then dance with bubbles all around.

5 Plans for Week 4: July 2-6 No swimming this week. Summer is officially here come play outside! Vacation on Wed, July 4 th (Fees pro-rated). Nature Exploration: Tilden Naturalist visit for Nature Ramble in the park. Hear about what's going on in the park, wildlife and plant-wise right now. Always something new happening! Explore the area around Meadows site. Great to get under the big trees in Tilden! Art and Science Fun: Kira Dulaney our admin leader, who is also an afterschool teacher and an amazing artist will lead the group in a Washi Tape decoration project. Mentos/Cola Experiment: Go far out in the field to try it out 4 bottles of cola, 4 different spouts... see how they all work! Exercise: Yoga with Jnana (say ghee-anna) Gowan : experience the fun and stillness of yoga movement and breathing together with friends. Play Group Games together: Tag, parachute games, and medic with our experienced and fun staff & youth leaders; Hoops, Lunastix, Yoga Balls: Fun to learn some new tricks and build on what you know. Cooperative Games: Learn some good ones to pull everyone together to figure out how to win as a group! Cooking- Shaved Ice-Make and enjoy with 100% fruit juice concentrate flavorings! Make and eat your own little campfire with pretzels sticks, dried mango, etc. and learn about campfire safety. Food items are organic Food items are organic (90% of the time), vegetarian, and Kosher. Walk the Tightrope: Test your balance on the Slackline we'll set up! Water Play on the field (weather permitting) Play some Duck, Duck, Splash and throw some water balloons. Friday Fun Monkey Biz Jeopardy Game & Dance Party: Test your camp knowledge (all in fun) & dance together on the field!

6 Plans for Week 5: July 9-13 The beauty of Tilden is in full effect right now... come play! Nature Exploration: Hike to the Little Farm, Feed the Animals: The animals love the lettuce & celery we bring to feed them, especially those goats. A Tilden Naturalist will lead a Nature Ramble hike in the park. Hear about what's going on in the park, wildlife and plant-wise right now. Always something new happening! Head down to Froggy Flats for some Fairy House building with leaves, sticks, bark. Art and Science Fun: Work on a Mural: We ll do ours on paper, but the idea is to work together on a large scale. Teamwork!; Sparkly Marble Painting: Cover marbles in metallic paint and tilt or shake the box to see how what new designs you make; Play with Oobleck: Mix cornstarch and water and feel it shift from solid(ish) to liquid in large bins on the lawn. Don t be surprised to hear talk of non-newtonian fluids later on. Always comes up. Decorate a your own Slap Bracelet to keep. Most led by Samantha Swor, our Art Teacher. Music and Cooking!: Drumming with Yari Mander. Husk corn and once cooked, choose toppings from our corn on the cob bar. With Chef Brad. Food items are organic (90% of the time), vegetarian, and Kosher. We'll share it all at the end and maybe trade a little!

7 Plans for Week 6: July Hang out and relax under the redwoods...it s summer! Nature Exploration: Hike to the Playground or Jewel Lake and see what animals we will see on the way or in the water. Explore around the Meadows site, learn about the trees and plants growing in the park, use magnifying glasses, nature books, and just take time to look at what s around us. Art & Imaginative Fun: Tie Dye Your Very Own Shirt: Create your own style of tying and then dye a T-shirt to keep! (We'll supply the shirt. Nature Exploration: Hike to the Little Farm, Feed the Animals: The animals love the lettuce & celery we bring to feed them. Sometimes the cows are already full...we ll see. Walk down to Froggy Flats for some Fairy House building. What can you build with what s here... leaves, sticks, bark. Listen, look, and play under the big trees. Try a bird call, build with sticks, use a magnifier to see what does bark look like clooooose up. Art and Science Fun: Design a Super S/Hero mask: What kind of mask will hide your identity when you are your super s/hero self?; Gak! It s glue and starch, and is it ever fun to cut, drip, and squeeze!; Solar Beads and Bells: Design some jewelry that rings and changes color!; Dot Painting: Fun to paint dot or line designs under the trees; Samantha Swor, our Art Teacher will lead most of these projects. 9 Plans for Week 8: July 30-Aug 3 Tilden is a beautiful place to be in the summer! Nature Exploration: Walk down to Froggy Flats and listen, look, and play under the big trees. Try a bird call, build with sticks, use a magnifier to see what does bark look like clooooose up; Hike to Jewel Lake: We ll go on a leisurely hike around Tilden to Jewel Lake this week. Use magnifying glasses to look in close at the plants and insects all around. See any turtles hiding on the edges of the lake? Lots going on around the water. Art Fun: Hand Sew a little monkey pouch: What treasure will you store in your new bag?; Create your own Animal Design Magnets: Use our fancy magnet-making machine; Make a Card for someone with Stamps, ink and oil pastels: Who will you send a message to?; Roller Painting: Dip rollers in paint and GO!! Think flowers, vines, trees, and plants. We ll have Face Painting, Temporary Tattoos, and Costumes to try out! Friday Fun Treasure Hunt: Get in groups and look for your treasure! We'll share it all at the end and maybe trade a little!

10 Plans for Week 9: Aug 6-10 Come join us in one of last few weeks of summer! Nature Exploration: Hike to the Little Farm, Feed the Animals: The animals love the lettuce & celery we bring to feed them. Sometimes the sheep are already full...we ll see. Head down to Froggy Flats for some Fairy House building. We ll read a book about fairy houses and get to making our own. What can you build with what s already here... leaves, sticks, bark, rocks. Art Fun: Paint in layers with underwater silhouettes and designs alone or with some friends; Work on a group Underwater Mural: Work on the water, or the many real and imagined creatures living in it; Create your own paper Movable Sea Creature: Lobster top & squid bottom? Human top & shark bottom? Or the traditional Merfolk... you decide! Then decorate with designs and tools; Most led by Samantha Swor, our Art Teacher. Music and Cooking!: Drumming with Yari Mander. Homemade Ice Cream with Chef Brad: Make and enjoy with sprinkles! Soy Milk Option will be available, depending on allergies or sensitivities. Food items are organic (90% of the time), vegetarian, and Kosher. Exercise: Put on a MBC Circus! Decide what to practice and perform and put on a show for each other. Play Group Games together: Tag, parachute games, and medic with our experienced and fun staff & youth leaders; Hoops, Lunastix, Yoga Balls, Beamo: Fun to learn some new tricks and build on what you know; Walk the Tightrope: Test your balance on a Slackline! Try a bird call, build with sticks, use a magnifier to see what does bark look like clooooose up; Hike to the Little Farm, Feed the Animals: The animals love the lettuce & celery we bring to feed them, especially those goats. Art and Science Fun: We ll Experiment with Baking Soda and Colored Vinegar: Use an eye dropper and spoon to mix them together and see what happens!; Decorate your own small zipper Bag and Slap Bracelet Draw all over the bracelet and then have fun slapping it on. The tension in the metal band is interesting to experiment with. How does it work? Bistable structures rock!; Play with Oobleck: Mix cornstarch and water and feel it shift from solid(ish) to liquid in large bins on the lawn. Make a Washi tape decorated picture frame!
