4 Walking Water We all spill, especially with a house full of little kids. How many times have we used paper towels to clean up a mess? This experiment shows how water is absorbed by paper towels and the kids love watching the water walk clear cups, food coloring, water, paper towels Step 1: Get a clear cup (plastic or glass). Fill it about half way with water and add some food coloring. Step 2: Roll up a paper towel and insert half into the cup with colored water. Insert the other half into the second empty cup. Step 3: Leave it alone! It takes awhile but eventually you will end up with the same amount of water in both cups. The water travels up the paper towel and empties back into the empty cup. 5 Worm Hotel - Empty 2 liter bottle - Sand - Potting soil or dirt - Worms Step 1: Gather supplies and have an adult helper cut the top off the bottle. Step 2: Layer sand and dirt into the bottle Step 3: Dig for worms! (Tip: look under rocks.) Step 4: Add the worms to the bottle and 1/8 cup of water to make the soil moist. Step 5: Enjoy the worm hotel. Explain how over time the worms will move the sand and dirt around so the layers won t be separate anymore! 4. 5.

6 Backyard Habitat - burlap - colorful felt pieces - buttons - scissors - additional decorations - pipe cleaners, yarn, whatever sounds fun Step 1: Cut burlap to the size you want. Begin cutting the felt to make a tree trunk and leaves. Step 2: Glue the leaves and trunk to the burlap. Then add felt grass to the bottom of the burlap. Step 3: Make animals out of buttons, felt, pipe cleaners, etc. We made a mouse :) 4. Step 4: We put fruit in the tree with pipe cleaners and made a sun out of felt.

7 Growing Beans - Dried kidney beans - Paper towel - Jar Step 1: Put the dry beans inside a damp paper towel. Step 2: Put the paper towel inside the jar. Keep the paper towel moist by adding a little water everyday. Step 3: Check on your beans every day! Step 4: One week later we had fully sprouted beans! (Do not eat! Kidney bean sprouts are not edible.) More Fun: Take dry beans and glue them onto a paper with sight words written on it. Great fun and great for fine motor skills! 4. 5.

9 My Snake - panty hose - newspaper or scrap paper - red felt - glue - googly eyes - paper - paints (optional) Step 1: Cut one leg of the panty hose off. Step 2: Stuff the panty hose with newspaper or scrap paper to fill in the body of the snake. Tie off once your snake is full of paper. Step 3: Cut felt to make a tongue for your snake and then glue it on, along with some googly eyes. Step 4: Decorate with paint and glitter. 4.

10 Rainforest Terrarium - jar with lid - dirt or potting soil - rocks/gravel - little plants Step 1: Fill the jar with alternating layers of gravel and dirt. Step 2: Put little plants into the jar, like moss and flowers collected from outdoors. Step 3: Add some fun rocks. We put a little parrot in it too :) Step 4: Set the jar in direct sunlight and after a few days you will see the water cycle in action as condensation forms on the jar. 4.

12 Measuring Snake - construction paper - googly eyes - ruler - scissors - glue Step 1: Trace the shape of a snake about the length of the ruler onto the paper. Cut the snake out. Step 2: To decorate, cut different shapes out of construction paper and glue them onto the body of the snake. Step 3: Add the eyes and using the ruler as a guide, write units of measurement on your snake. Now you can have your child measure things in snake lengths.

13 Rainstick - scissors - paper towel tube - duct/packaging tape - rice - aluminum foil Step 1: Tape one end of tube closed. Step 2: Make a mini accordion out of foil and put it into the tube. Step 3: Add rice to the tube. Step 4: Cover the top with more tape. Then you can cover your rain stick with paper and decorate. Then turn over and over and listen to the soothing sounds of rain! 4. 14 Scavenger Hunt Fun - Bag, kid scissors, magnifying glass, pencil, ziploc bags and camera. Step 1: We started by cutting pictures out of magazines of items we hopes to find sticks, leaves, worms, flowers etc. Then we glued them to the front of the bag and tied our pencil on top. We could easily cross off what we found with the attached pencil Step 2: Go hunting!!! We took a walk through wonderful trails by our home. Step 3: We brought the camera (one the kids can use) so they could take pictures of things that needed to stay part of the trails. No picking the plants kids! Step 4: Explore with a magnifying glass too! We found many things that didn t belong in nature and were able to talk about the importance of littering and taking care of our world. 4.

15 Frog Craft - paper plate - red/green/orange construction paper - green paint - scissors - glue Step 1: Paint the inside of the plate green. If you can find a green paper plate then skip this step. Step 2: Cut out oval eyes for the frog from the red paper. Draw pupils and glue the eyes to the top of the plate. Step 3: Cut out four green legs with orange feet and glue together. Then glue to your frog. 4. Step 4: Cut out a red tongue and glue on the center of the plate.

16 Blow it up Fun! Experience the magic of baking soda and vinegar while blowing up balloons. - Balloon; empty water bottle; baking soda; vinegar; funnel Step 1: Pour vinegar into the bottle about 1/3 of the way. Step 2: Fill the balloon about half way with baking soda. Step 3: Attach the balloon to the top of bottle. Be careful not to let the baking soda fall in yet. Once it is in place, lift the balloon up so baking sodas will fall in. Step 4: The vinegar and baking soda have a wonderful reaction that blows up the balloon. 4.

17 Leaf Printing - paper - paint - leaves - paint brushes Step 1: Paint (the paint pictured is Natural Earth Paint) the under side of a leaf. Step 2: Press paint side down on cloth. Step 3: Cover with piece of scrap paper/ newspaper. Step 4: Rub and pull off leaf.
